songs that provoke tears
some songs carry a certain emotional weight that can overwhelm us. what was your first? i'm not sure but i think my first was:
|
Gonna be honest: none...
|
i don't mean to say that every time i hear the song it causes tears. just sometimes...
some others: out of sheer beauty: when the horn kicks in: the outro: and laughed, at himself, he thought he knew what that was... |
My dad sung this to me and my siblings as a lullaby when we were younger. He has a terminal brain disease now... this song just almost always brings me to tears and never fails to make me very sad

Built to Spill - Things Fall Apart
Before this album came out last year, I never thought it would contain a song so powerful it moved me more than anything they'd ever written before. Though admittedly, I was in a state that made me particularly vulnerable and the lyrics seem to fit perfectly, bringing some clarity or affirmation to my actions, almost like a best friend telling me "hey, it's ok", and finally being able to let it all out. I still remember the day the album came out, I got home and was listening to it through headphones while cleaning dishes and preparing dinner, being completely blown away by it. It practically stopped me in my tracks. "We've all seen enough, now its time to decide The meekness of love or the power of pride It doesn't matter if you're good or smart God damn it, things fall apart." |
Only Hope by Mandy Moore
|
I'm not sure. Probably one of these two: In the Ghetto (Elvis Presley) or Pearls (Sade):
|
Many, many Cat Power songs make me teary, but especially this one. And she's the only artist that can do that constantly.
|
YES. to Joanna Newsom.
Cat Power and NMH also do it for me, but more with these songs: (at the "I could stay here, become someone different..." part) and (at "And in my dreams you're alive and you're crying...") Others that leap to mind: [edit: well the last one won't work, but it's "Walking on a Wire" by Richard & Linda Thompson] A lot more. I kind of get teary-eyed more than I'd like to cop to. |
Uh... here are a few.....
^Syndir Guds - Sigur Ros ^Tracy - Mogwai there. happy listening,folks. |
|
bawwwwwwwwww bawww x 2 |
As of today this is the only song that has ever brought a tear to my eyes. |
Albert King ~ Angel Of Mercy is a real tearjerker.
|
@boardsofcanada: Great songs AND username. :) Don't think we've met yet. Welcome.
I've loads of these because nostalgia is a fucking bitch, so let's start with these two. |

there are a couple of Sigur Ros songs that choke me up....but this is mainly due to the videos....especially the one where the kids jump off the cliff...i cannot watch that and this song gets me everytime |
@Nine Black Poppies - 'Color and the kids' does it for me too. In fact, the whole album is heartbreaking__šmrc
|
This is the only song that's done that for me. |

Chris Bell - You and Your Sister
A nearly perfect song. It's amazingly beautiful too. I think the 'Country' version is even better, but I can't seem to find that one on Youtube. Tom Waits - Closing Time This is, in my opinion, the most beautiful instrumental ever recorded. It's perfectly arranged. |

I agree, but this one was the first one that came to my mind. 'Anywhere I Lay My Head' is great too.

Placebo - Narcoleptic
Placebo - Burger Queen Placebo - Blind Placebo - Passive Aggressive Wilco - Via Chicago Bon Iver - re:stacks Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely Elliott Smith - No Name No. 5 Elliott Smith - Everything Reminds Me Of Her Sigur Ros - Andvari Sonic Youth - Little Trouble Girl Sonic Youth - Wish Fulfillment Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have Manchester Orchestra - Colly Strings Brand New - Coca Cola Ryan Adams - Harder Now That Its Over Leonard Cohen - Chelsea Hotel #2 this thread is pretty relevant to me right now. |
Cause I've got you, to leeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet me down |
|
I prefer the original.
The lyrics are beautiful by the way. |
the original is indeed beautiful, but would probably not provoke tears for the many here who do not speak french. i prefer some of jacks' phrasing as well. for example--"goodbye papa, it's hard to die, when all the birds are singing in the sky" is a bit more poetic than brel's "adieu l'emile je vais mourir, c'est dur de mourir au printemps, tu sais"
|
I know it's an orchestral piece, but Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is a very emotional piece to me. It was my grandmother's favourite piece.
I also know two people who died in the 9/11 attacks so the video is very emotional for me as well. Also, Nessun Dorma from Giacomo Puccini's Turandot. Pavarotti was one of my grandmother's favourite singers and he sings this piece beautifully. |
Wings For Marie -Tool
Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd Everybody Hurts by REM Exit Music (for a film) by Radiohead I love these songs and there probably the ones that tug @ my heart the most....if any song can provoke a tear its one of these songs. |

On occasion, this has been known to bring me to tears, starting with the lines "Twenty-seven people, even more/They were boys with their cars, summer jobs/Oh my God/Are you one of them?"
Sufjan Stevens - John Wayne Gacy, Jr. |
When I sit and really delve in the lyrics of this song the tears come. It reminds me of a good friend of mine who passed away @ 20 years old...
|
Despite this being one of my favorite songs of all time, those lyrics can really cause tears to fall, especially after just losing someone.

YouTube - Cursive - Staying Alive
Just because of how damn beautiful it is. YouTube - Indian Summer - Angry Son "THIS IS THE ANGRY SON!!!" Gets me every time. http://jonnyleather.com/blog1/wp-con...mb-500x500.jpg And pretty much every song on this album will have me bawling really quick. |
I've posted this song on a similar forum before, but dam this song is just so heartfelt and emotional first time I heard it I teared up. When I was 16 I was obsessed with Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. When I heard this song it was kind of sad to hear knowing it was the last recorded song Kurt did, supposedly it was going to be used for lollapalooza and was recorded a few weeks before his death. The lyrics could be really associated with anything he was going through in his life and at the time I did get a bit teary eyed. Today I find it pretty emotional. |

This one's mostly associative, but it does get to me to the point that I usually skip it on the occasions that I bring this record out these days. This one's silly and I'm not sure why it gets me but it does. Especially the end. I think it's actually this whole album that does it, but this comes toward the end and sums it up perfectly. |
Cliche as it may seem, this song changed me. Well, this whole album, really. Crucial for me in the self-growth and realization. I feel like I get ragged on a bit by my friends because Lateralus is my favorite Tool album. Let's face it, most choose Aenima or something older. I, for one, lean more towards progression than that initial rawness that came about with. Lateralus, to me, really showcases their growth and it moves me like no other albums of their's. |
