Which Influential Band Inspired The Worst Bands?

I'd say iron Maiden. I can't imagine how much cheesy, middle of the road metal they spawned

James 08-21-2010 10:02 AM

Nirvana

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-21-2010 10:03 AM

Why are the Beatles & The Beach Boys not on the list?

They're responsible for far too much dire twee indie pop.

Landon 08-21-2010 10:17 AM

I'd say Sex Pistols - think of how many unoriginal punk bands there are.

SATCHMO 08-21-2010 10:19 AM

Yeah, none of the worst offenders are on that poll.

I'll go with VanHalen

Unknown Soldier 08-21-2010 10:27 AM

Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Van Halen. Why are Jethro Tull on this list!!!

James 08-21-2010 10:31 AM

Why are The VU on here?

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-21-2010 10:33 AM

Why not

The sheer number of dire humourless post punk bands they inspired warrent their inclusion.

James 08-21-2010 10:35 AM

Well I disagree, when you look back at what they influenced in general, it's more good than bad.

Jedey 08-21-2010 10:40 AM

I voted for Nirvana, too many bands thought a flannel shirt would make them grunge.

bogey_j 08-21-2010 10:40 AM

I put Jethro Tull on there because I figured they were a big inspiration to all the **** prog of the early 70's

VU are on there because they have become the ultimate namedrop for indie bands. VU are one of my favorite bands, but they inspired a lot of good AND bad

No. Just, No.

I could create a compilation series with all the terrible covers of Venus In Furs I've heard over the years.

The Bullet 08-21-2010 11:12 AM

Other- Michael Jackson

He was an awesome pop singer, but think of all the bad bubblegum pop he inspired.

I can`t think of any s*** prog bands inspired by Jethro Tull!!! Tell me who you had in mind?

Prog is something you either like or you don`t like, because the technical prowess of the musicians and the sounds they create, could hardly be called crap.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 08-21-2010 11:29 AM

I'd agree on Van Halen. Seemed the point of 90% of all 80s mainstream rock was to be Van Halen. Can't be said about any other decade, to my recollection.

James 08-21-2010 11:37 AM

Op Ivy should be one. So much **** Ska-Punk boils down to them. Blink 182 influenced some pretty bad Pop Punk.

If you're going to blame a band for pop punk at least have the balls to mention The Buzzcocks.

Urban Hat€monger ? 08-21-2010 11:46 AM

I don't think you can blame the Buzzcocks.

I can't recall any really bad punk pop until The Descendents came along.

I blame them

Sansa Stark 08-21-2010 11:50 AM

Operation Ivy should not be one, at all. The ska influence was there way before them

I'm not buying this for a minute. Most terrible ska punk sounds nothing like p ivy.

And I agree with Urban. Even though I'm a huge VU fan, they di influnce some of the worst music.

Dayvan Cowboy 08-21-2010 12:50 PM

To contribute, I would like to say that Aphex Twin, who I love very much, has inspired some pretty awful techno acts. Don't get me wrong, he's influenced a lot of cool people, but some of the people influenced by him are incredibly bland.

EDIT: Also, Boards Of Canada influenced Owl City and a lot of bad BOC clones so Boards of Canada is just as bad as Aphex when it comes to bland IDM and pop acts.

Stone Birds 08-21-2010 12:59 PM

blink 182 and metallica

I'm not saying they sound like Op Ivy that's not what the threads for, but I always thought they were the first big Ska Punk group. I could be wrong.
And I do think Op Ivy are pretty good, just because they might have influenced some bad stuff doesn't mean they're bad.

Oh, I know that saying that Op Ivy was an influence on some terrible music isn't the same as saying they were bad. That would be a hard argument to make, but there was so much 2nd wave ska, 3rd wave ska, and punk and hardcore that I think was a greater influence. Op Ivy showed that the two styles could be blended. I think most tried to stay as far away from their sound as possible. The Clash was pretty influential toward ska punk too, as well as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Murphy's Law.

mr dave 08-21-2010 01:19 PM

MR. BUNGLE

i effing love Bungle, that band is awesome. however they're directly responsible for Korn, and indirectly responsible for Slipknot - and those are two of the better examples of their popular influence.

the worse thing about Bungle's influence is that it seems to have inspired a bunch of relatively talented kids into ditching their creativity so they could be mimics instead. rather than recognizing the greatness of Bungle's ability to weave a myriad of genres fluidly into one piece and finding their own scraps of mainstream styles that could be folded into a new dress, they play circus funk. great. and your vocalist creates lyrics using Penthouse magazine and a thesaurus... fabulous. :bonkhead:

So very true, and, unfortunately, there's no shortage of examples of this

Telephasic 08-21-2010 02:49 PM

The Strokes. I mean, I really love Is This It, but they influenced a lot of god awful indie bands like Razorlight.

The Monkey 08-21-2010 04:16 PM

Nirvana, no doubt. Cobain's awful ****ing vocals are echoed in every other alternative rock act these days, it seems.

This is the band I voted other for. I blame all 80's Hair metal firmly on their shoulders. Yuck!
Though in the end, try as they might even great bands influence crap. That just the way it goes.

This is the exact thing I was about to post. I find it incredibly ironic that a band as interesting and creative as Mr. Bungle could have inspired so many crappy, uninteresting bands only interested in mimicking one tiny facet of their sound.

Another band with the same problem, and who was a big influence on mostly the same group of bands as Bungle, is Primus.

loveissucide 08-22-2010 08:48 AM

Of that lot Nirvana, mainly for the flock of rip-offs that flooded 90's and early 00's rock radio.Although the following are equally to blame for inspiring crap bands.
The Stone Roses/Happy Mondays
Husker Du
The Strokes/The Libertines
Van Halen
Massive Attack

Violent & Funky 08-22-2010 10:49 AM

Well shit, I was gonna post the same thing as both of you. But I'll just toss Faith No More into the same group...

Honestly, I can't see this. There really isn't a whole lot of funk/soul inspired pop music, and certainly it isn't delivered the way he delivered.

What crap bands did The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays or Massive Attack inspire?

Alfred 08-22-2010 01:29 PM

Nirvana for sure, followed closely by Radiohead. I think Pantera should be on the poll though.

Indeed, Faith No More inspired alot of Nu Metal bands, which is a very hated genre.

Zer0 08-22-2010 03:24 PM

Two bands that spring to my mind are Pearl Jam and The Libertines.
I like Pearl Jam but i'm not that big a fan of them either, they do have some great songs in their catalog, but i do hold them mostly responsible for that god-awful and terrible musical style we know as 'post-grunge'. So take a bow Creed/Alterbridge, Seether, Nickelback, Puddle Of Mudd, etc.

I was never a big fan of The Libertines but i do hold them responsible for paving the way for bands like The Enemy, Scouting For Girls, The Kooks and the like.

Stone Birds 08-22-2010 03:39 PM

The Beatles
Madonna
Bright Eyes (there is so much emo acoustic music)
The Postal Service (the influenced owl city, nuff said)
_________ (whoever the first auto-tune rapper was, it's hard to tell they all sound the same)
