Please don't skip over their masterpiece:

Screen13 10-25-2010 07:21 PM

To name three examples...
Dave Matthews Band
Travis
Coldplay

To me, they don't have any edge, mystery, controversy, or anything else interesting, so in my book, they're quite dull. I have a feeling that Stereophonics could be right up there in the list although I have not heard much. Maybe Limp Bizkit and Bush could be in there as well for just having predictable styles that don't catch my ears, although with Bizkit it's more of that annoying style that got old with me after my first listen which makes it even worse (Catchy beats plus pedestrian music and a lot of screaming in the right places with very little to say).

Screen13 10-25-2010 07:24 PM

As Radiohead are a big subject of the moment, I'm not a major fan, but their first four albums are certainly not boring while they occasionally make some interesting news from time to time.

Rage Against the Machine 10-25-2010 07:25 PM

I want to love so many classic shoegaze bands but a lot of them just don't so it for me. I love the idea of spacey, dreamy, indie rock but a lot of 80's and 90's bands, bar MBV, just bore me. IMO the genre really got it's wings when it started blending with electronic and ambient later on.

for example, Ride are considered a classic but I just find them kinda dull.

Just as a handle on what you're talking about, are you saying that bands like Slowdive are something you'd dislike?

Not harassing, just wondering the context of 'spacey, dreamy'.

Rage Against the Machine 10-25-2010 07:30 PM

Actually Slowdive are one of the ones I skipped for whatever reason (but I will give them a shot asap). basically what I'm saying, as blasphemous as it probably is, I find modern shoegaze a lot more appealing and interesting than the early bands like Lush, Jesus and the Mary Chain, Lilys, etc.

and by the spacey and dreamy bit I meant a lot of the bands I don't find interesting are the definitions of these words, and it's strange to me that I don't enjoy them cause I'm a sucker for both of those adjectives.

Well, Slowdive generally have a 'spacey, dreamy' sound so don't get your hopes up ;) . Shoegaze classics usually separate people; I've not much of a care for the more dream-pop side of shoegaze myself, but that's just who I am.

As for modern shoegaze, I find it's never exceptional, but it's rarely poor. Classic shoegaze is often one or the other; whereas modern never disappoints but never truly surprises/excites me either.

Screen13 10-25-2010 07:41 PM

"Shoegaze" is certainly a like it or lump it happening in my book, but some of the bands lumped into the early days of the "scene" do have a bit of an attraction to me. At it's best, there's quite a mystery in the sound that's very relaxing.

Ride - I liked most of their music for a while, and Going Blank Again certainly has some good memories for me, but with Carnival of Light, I can hear where they were going on serious auto-pilot with the occasional good track...and the less said about Tarantula besides "Black Nite Crash," the better.

MBV - They only worked for me with Loveless, which may have been over-rated, but still was a bit innovative enough for me to take notice.

Lush - I also liked them as well. Good vocals and well-blended guitars, and their Pop album (Lovelife) was pretty good as well.

As for Chapterhouse...I'd rather pass. Still, some may find them alright, and Blood Music was certainly a serious misstep that went into a more Dance-oriented field at times. It seriously sounded like a band trying desperately to find a place, so I don't really call it boring.

Pale Saints...all respect to those who like them, there's where Shoegazing can get boring for me. (were they actually part of that whole thing?)

fritter 10-26-2010 01:49 PM

I think Radiohead, The Grateful Dead, DMB, O.A.R., and Coldplay are all boring. Phish is the most boring band I can think of off the top of my head. I can see how some people think shoegaze is boring but I find some of it (like My Bloody Valentine, Scarling, Slowdive, and especially Lush) interesting and exciting. I saw this obscure shoegaze band live recently for $3. Between and sometimes during songs the guitarists actually got down on the floor to tweak their pedals and boxes. I'm not sure if that fiddling always improved the sound but the effects in general did lead to an impressive and unique experience that was much, much better than listening to the studio versions of their songs.

Flower Child 10-26-2010 02:53 PM

Anything associated with Phil Collins.
I can't leave out Bruce Springsteen. His name even sucks.
Save for the opening solo of Roundabout, Yes consists of nothing.
The Styx
Van Halen
Guns & Roses

Atrocious and boring are too different things!
Well, they can coincide with each other.
I didn't nominate Genesis, because although they are boring - they're also atrocious. Selling England By The Pound is a horrible record.

LoathsomePete 10-26-2010 04:52 PM

Sloan.

Usually I'm generous to Canadian bands that got popular in the joyous pre-Nickelback days but I have no love for these guys.

It feels like I've seen this post in every thread involving a negative aspect of a band.

The White Stripes, they don't hold my interest. Don't get me wrong I enjoy long songs and all it's not like those don't hold my interest. But, The White Stripes are very redundant. They have a sound that they can't escape from which makes there music boring knowing they can't experiment a little bit. It's just the same garage rock/blues influence that sounds the same song after song.

IamTimmeh 10-27-2010 11:59 PM

Never found what everybody likes about Nickelback. The whole genre is just kind of bland to me. But I've never given them an honest listen.

RVCA 10-28-2010 12:02 AM

for those unaware: nickelback is musicbanter's universally despised act

I hear you. Back in the early 00s a friend of mine burned me a copy of De Stijl and White Blood Cells and I could never quite get into them. Then I saw them live and I realized why: They basically only have three songs.

ThePhanastasio 10-28-2010 06:46 AM

Dave Matthews Band. Never got into them at all, although I've been made to listen to them on numerous occasions. I find them completely boring.

Violent & Funky 10-28-2010 09:17 AM

If you're looking for a more diverse White Stripes you guys should listen to Icky Thump.

Urban Hat€monger ? 10-28-2010 11:12 AM

I don't WANT a more diverse White Strips. :(

I wish they go back to just recording in a garage, they were awesome then.

You've got to turn a certain aspect of your mind off, and another on. I feel the same about trance music. But when I'm in the right frame, it's really beautiful, powerful stuff.

I actually found White Blood Cells to be a far better album, to be honest. I really don't like Icky Thump.

First three White Stripes albums are significantly better than the second three. Overrated as ****, but I always had a soft spot for them. Suppose a lot of people do and that's why they were as huge as they were.

Albeit, kind of a one trick pony, really.

fooruky 10-28-2010 11:53 PM

i actually really enjoy jack white's guitar work, he has some moments where you can really tell he puts a lot of feeling into his playing and he has a good feel with the guitar

Elephant was one of the first CDs I ever bought, so it holds a special place in my heart
