boxer became really important to me with the development of my friendship with kristen and her boyfriend ike.....this is "their" album, and while standing on the sideline of their budding romance, fake empire especially captured my two dear friends as a couple,.....i cant help listening to this album and smiling knowing that those two are so happy

however here is my choice cut

Top Albums is

1. New York Dolls - New York Dolls
2. Ramones - Ramones
3. Patti Smith - Horses
4. Nico - Chelsea Girl
5. Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power
6. Sparks - Kimono My House

Peter Gabriel - Full Catalog

(Wont let me post image urls, probably because I'm a new guy. I'll edit them in later, sorry.)

Beirut - The Flying Club Cup (2007)

Fantastic album. Condon's obsession with Paris really shines in this thing here. Really digging his whole Classical-pop influence. Plus, Condon's got an amazing voice.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago (2007)

Was sort of surprised that I missed out on this since everyone I know has been talking about Bon Iver forever. Plus, this heartfelt, solo acoustic sound is usually right up my alley.

The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002)

I'll be honest, before this I haven't listened to The Flaming Lips before (I know, heresy). I figured it was about time I educate myself, so I decided to pick this album up, mainly because I had prior knowledge of Fight Test.

zachsd 12-30-2010 08:41 PM

This. Only started listening to it about a week ago and I'm pretty sure it's now easily in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.

"Fight Test" is basically a rip off of Cat Steven's "Father and Son" sound-wise. Good album, though.

This is undoubtedly the best album I discovered this year.

And this is a fantastic review I found on rateyourmusic, which I invite you to read if you have a couple minutes to spare.

Quote:

SAW THIS IN A SHOP WITH “THIS ****ING ROCKS” STICKER ON IT SO TOOK IT TO COUNTER AND SLAMMED IT DOWN AND SHOUTED AT DUDE WORKING THERE “HOW MUCH?” WHEN HE ANSWERED I SAID “NOT THE PRICE DILLWEED, HOW MUCH DOES IT ROCK?” DILWEED’S ANSWER IS LIKE SHRUG, “I dunno, a lot?” WHICH WINDS ME UP ‘COS HE’S BEING A PUSSY ABOUT IT AND I SAY “I WANT IT TO ROCK MY SOCKS CLEAN OFF MY FEET, IS IT GONNA DO THAT?” AND HE’S ALL LIKE, “Yeah it will.” SO I’M LIKE, “YEAH I’LL TAKE IT.”

GET IT HOME AND PUT IT ON, TURNING IT UP AND SOME GUY STARTS TALKING TO HIS ‘BABY’ ABOUT FASHION AND I START THINKING ‘WHAT KIND OF NANCY BULL**** HAVE I GOT INTO HERE?’ BUT THEN SOME NOISE STARTS HUMMING AND I START THINKING ‘WHAT KIND OF NOISE RUBBISH HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO HERE?’ AND THEN AFTER A MINUTE OF GETTING ANGRY COS I GOT BURNED INTO BUYING SOME ARTSY RUBBISH THE BAND KICK IN ALL JABBING RIFFS AND YELLING TIL THEY’RE HORSE AND I GO WILD, SMASHING UP THE ROOM WITH PART ANGER AND PART HXXXXX JOY. MAN, THERE’S LIKE A PIT GOING IN MY LIVING ROOM AND IT’S JUST ME AND I’M TEARING INTO **** AND THE CURTAINS ARE FALLING DOWN AND MOM’S YELLING FROM HER BED BUT I PRETEND LIKE I DON’T HEAR HER CRIES COS I’M GOING APE **** ROCKING OUT AND BEING ALL HXXXXXXCORE AND ****.

BUT SOON I’M GETTING ANGRY AGAIN COS, YEAH, THEY KNOW HOW TO ROCK OUT THESE BOYS DO, SO WHAT I WANNA KNOW IS WHY THEY GOTTA KEEP INTERRUPTING MY SLAM DANCING WITH SOME TECHNO BULL**** OR SOME QUIET BITS AND EVEN, GET THIS, A VIOLIN!! I MEAN, I’M THERE ROCKING OUT LIKE I KNOW HOW AND THEN THERE’S THIS ****ING VIOLIN, AND YEAH, IT’S PLAYING A QUALITY BIT OF A TUNE, BUT WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF SOME OF MY CREW WALKED IN AT THAT MOMENT AND SAW ME ALL SWEATY AND BLEEDING AND LISTENING TO A ****ING VIOLIN??? I’D HAVE TO KILL MYSELF OR ALL OF THEM AS THE SHAME OF IT ALL WOULD BE TOO MUCH.

SO IT WAS TOO STOP STARTY AND ONE MINUTE I WAS SLAMMIN’ ROUND THE LIVING ROOM WITH MOMMA HOLLERING AT ME TO TURN IT OFF AND BRING HER HER MEDICATION AND THE NEXT MINUTE THEY’RE SINGING WITH NO DISTORTION ON THE GUITARS OR DOING SOME JAZZ OR SOME ****, SO I MARCHED BACK TO THE SHOP AND SLAM THE CD DOWN IN FRONT OF THAT SAME WUSSY MOFO AND SAY “MY SOCKS ARE LIKE STILL ON DUDE!” AND HE SIGHS AND TAKES IT FROM ME WITH NO QUESTIONS AND SAYS, “you wanna swap it for something else or do you want cash?” SO I WAS ALL LIKE, “CASH OF COURSE, I AIN’T BUYING FROM A SHOP THAT HAS STICKERS SAYING ‘THIS ROCKS’ ON STUFF THAT DOESN’T.”

SO HE SAYS, “you didn’t like it too much then, I didn’t think you would.” AND I SAID “WHAT THE ****’S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? I LIKE SOME OF IT, THEY JUST NEED TO KEEP IT INTENSE ALL THE WAY THROUGH NOT JUST WHEN IT SUITS THEM.” AND HE SAYS, ALL ****Y LIKE “well, Refused made this album to move the hardcore scene on as they thought that it was stagnating and lacking ideas and made for people like you who were all about an image and a particular lifestyle rather than open mindedness and expression. They did it, I think, but sadly there will always be people like you who were left behind. I mean, does it get much better than when they come back in after the jazz section on “Deadly Rhythm”? That bit sounds like a brutal attack, it’s insane! Or, or the violin intro to “Tannhäuser”? When those drums come in it’s epic, really groundbreaking for a hardcore record. But, if you didn’t like it…..”

I BARELY GIVE THE GUY TIME TO OPEN THE TILL BEFORE I LIFT IT RIGHT UP FROM THE COUNTER PULLING ALL THE WIRES OUT WITH IT AND CRACK IT OVER HIS HEAD THE PRICK. THEN I PUT IT THROUGH THE WINDOW AND KNOCK OVER A COUPLE OF SHELVES WORTH OF CD’S BEFORE STAMPING ON THE GUY’S HEAD AND LEGGING IT. AS I LEFT I HEARD HIM SHOUT “Philistine!” I’M GONNA GO HOME AND LOOK THAT ****ING WORD UP TO WORK OUT WHETHER THAT LITTLE QUEER HAS GOT ANOTHER VISIT COMING OR NOT.

Wow, I was at the record store the other day, stumbled across that and almost bought it because of the intriguing title/cover. Kind of bummed I didn't now.

RVCA 12-31-2010 01:14 AM

Bummer! You should definitely get it!

alenfort 01-03-2011 08:45 AM

Atassette Datassette album is discovered of year 2010.This interactive digital media, I guess. This does not make me think any other artists in particular, but it is very good.

AeroZeppelin 01-03-2011 09:59 AM

The Band's Greatest Hits - recorded throughout the sixties and seventies but only released in 2000

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977) - Easily the best album to come out of the seventies

Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited (1965) - Dylan has so many great albums but this one stood out for me

Roland 01-03-2011 10:42 AM

I got into:

Eazy-E - "Eazy Duz It" (1988)

Nas - "Illmatic" (1994)

Aphex Twin - "Selected Ambient Works Part Two" (1994)

Well, when I heard the instrumentals... it was great, but the vocals were just terrible. Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand that screaming thing. I had my hopes up too because I've had a lot of difficulty getting into punk besides Patti Smith (her early stuff) and Television (and they're not completely punk). Ah well.

Turquoise_Days 01-03-2011 02:09 PM

I'm just discovering this - on first listen, I must say it's rather good!

There are a good few tracks on this I just cannot stop listening to...

And ....

:shycouch:

..the first Linkin Park album, which I'm finding ridiculously enjoyable (and I'm nowhere near the demographics of their target audience).

TheCunningStunt 01-03-2011 02:12 PM

Turquoise_Days, you should make friends with RVCA.

I find this thread a little silly, mainly because in 2009 I had about 250 albums and now I have about 1,300.
I've pretty much found all my favourite albums this year.
Maybe 2011 won't be as prosperous, so if we have this thread come the end of 2011 I may be able to post a few favourites.

This is something I've never understood, how screaming vocals ruin music for people... especially music that compliments them (like Refused).

I'm not going to rule all of them out, but in most cases I've heard, it's just a sound so unpleasant for me that I can't focus anywhere else in the music. It's a distraction I don't tend to enjoy. Some people hate nails on a chalkboard, others hate the sound of sandpaper. When it comes to music, that's the one for me that causes the most distaste.

Hi RVCA!

250 to 1300? Where did you find the time to listen to them all??!!!! Well done, though. I find it takes me a good few weeks to really get into an album, once the first listen convinces me that I want to listen it again - as a result, I've got a backlog of albums that will easily take me into...ooooh, 2015?

Yeah I understand, the screamy/shouty lyrical style was definitely an acquired-taste, exposure-effect thing for me. I used to think it "ruined" albums too and I hope you'll feel as I currently do someday.

Some more ...

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_3Njt_CMMLG...e+Sinister.jpg

Longwave, Secrets Are Sinister, 2008
(I loved their first two albums, but lost interest after the horrible "There's A Fire." A fantastic return to form for a criminally underrated band)

http://img.noiset.com/images/album/t...oad-31234.jpeg

Tahiti 80, Activity Center, 2009
(Excellent English-speaking French pop group who are virtually unknown in the states)

http://therisingstorm.net/audio/unitedstates.jpg

The United States of America, self-titled, 1968
(Melodic, psychedelic rock album that didn't do a thing upon late 60s release. "The Garden of Earthly Delights" is among the standout tracks)

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Talking Heads, More Songs About Building and Food, 1978
(I dismissed this band for so long. Now I wonder why; love the nervy energy on this one)

It's all about Built To Spill. I discovered them this year, and, well, Perfect From Now On is a wonderful record.

Bison11 01-06-2011 10:08 PM

All the beatles stuff. I have always loved the Beatles, but I never REALLY knew the Beatles. I mostly listened to the Red and the Blue albums before this year, and I am really getting into all of their not well known stuff.

Ah. You mean, the Best of the Beatles...

s_k 01-07-2011 06:16 AM

I've never really liked those albums. They miss out on so many good Beatles songs.
Keep up the good work, Bison ;)

Yep that's my favorite Talking Heads Album, closely followed by Remain in Light. Yeah, the energy really stands out in that album, especially starting out with Thank You For Sending Me an Angel, and then the bass line in With Our Love is pretty amazing. Now that I think about there's a lot of great bass lines in that album.

Placeholder_ 01-07-2011 08:07 PM

I've been slowly working my way through Squarepusher's discography lately, having never heard anything from him until just recently.

Dude's a staggeringly talented musician (both analog and digital). The solo bass tracks on Ultravisitor are just unreal.

The Best Album is

1. Matias Aguayo.
2. Lily Allen.
3. Animal Collective.
4. Antipop Consortium.

The Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music - 2003

The Jayhawks music in general. I always knew this band existed but knew absolutely nothing by them. Jumped into their music very recently heads on and loved everything I heard.

Awesome music and lyrics. Too bad it's mastered so poorly (glaring distortion on the music throughout the album from over compression). Here's hoping for a great remaster!

Word on the street is the re-master will be awesome and out this fall, the re-masters of Hollywood Town Hall & Tomorrow The Green Grass are out now with bonus tracks! The Jayhawks reformed and will have a new disc out this summer or early fall, I really am looking foward to that.
