In most cases, for me, yes. Let's say a band makes a decent song. I end up liking it and listening to it. A week or two later, I hear the song on the radio ALL the time and it gets to the point where I absolutely despise the song. I am not one for mainstream whatsoever largely due to hearing the music everywhere and (sometimes) it not being very good. Of course, there are some good radio stations, but they are more underground or the DJ's play a wide variety of genres. I also like NPR, but for the most part... radio is a murderer.

Incredibly Generic Punk Covers of Popular Songs



Punk covers have been around a while, for example Sid Vicious cover of My Way or Dead Kennedys take on Viva Las Vegas. However, sometime in the 90s, some punk musicians from bands like NOFX and Lagwagon had managed to create a punk sound which was so uncreative that it was perfect for covering whatever songs that have traditional time signatures and are not too difficult. These covers typically sound so predictable and generic that you can imagine what they will sound like almost perfectly before you've even heard them.

One such popular band and a good example is Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. However, there are many bands out there riding the wave and adding to this phenomenon's horribleness.

Here are some songs. If you want to play a game, try to imagine what they will sound like before you listen to them and then see if you are correct.

Yeah, I have to disagree with the Over the Rainbow cover. It might not be better than the original, but I think it's an interesting rendition. I remember hearing it at the end of the a Taxicab Confessions episode and thought it worked really well.

I agree with Tore. But I would have touched on the current trend of "myspace screamo" and "hardcore" bands covering Pop or Hip Hop songs.

The overexposure is channeled through radio. Radio as a source of media is not the true problem, but the people behind the radio. So, I am considering radio being tool of those people. Therefore, I guess I could consider radio the "gun" in a metaphorical sense.

But the radio has plenty of good material on it. College radio for example is an important part of underground music. And throughout it's lifespan the radio has played an important role in everything from news to emerging genres and acts that owe their success to heavy radio rotation. It may seem less important nowadays with the Internet, but being played on the radio is still important to establishing a local fanbase.

There is more to radio then Top 40 stations.
