Rank the members of your favorite bands

There's some bands we know inside and out, so this is a thread about those bands and their members. Rank the members based on how much you appreciate their technical ability/how charming they are/how important you feel they are to the band, whatever.

The Clash

Mastodon

There aren't too many bands for which I'm capable of rating the members. But here is one.

Download
Dwayne R. Goettel (deceased) > Mark Spybey (not a full time member) > cEvin Key > Phil Western

bob. 01-10-2011 11:21 AM

i had no idea that Goettel was in Download!

i always thought Download was post "The Process"....interesting :)

Urban Hat€monger ? 01-10-2011 11:21 AM

I'd do The Fall but I have to be at work in 14 hours

The group was formed by Dwayne and cEvin in 94, and included the other two guys as original members. I believe it was Dwayne's idea to form this group, as a more techno-oriented project ("destroyed techno", as he put it). He wrote and performed on the first 3 albums (Furnace, Charlie's Family, and The Eyes of Stanley Pain) and associated EPs.

Slayer
Lombardo > Hanneman & King > Bostaph > Araya

Bauhaus
Daniel Ash > Kevin Haskins > Peter Murphy > David J

Killing Joke
Jaz > Geordie > Grohl > Atkins > Ferguson > Youth > Raven > everyone else

Faith No More
Mike Patton > Jim Martin > Roddy Bottum > Billy Gould > Trey Spruance > Mike Bordin > Jon Hudson > Chuck Mosley

(this last one is funny for me because Trey Spruance is probably one of my favorite guitarists ever but I just don't feel that his contributions to FNM were that amazing)

Grohl above Youth? Youth was a founding member and produced the last album and introduced the band to many new recording techniques. Grohl was essentially a session musician and whilst his contributions over the last few years has been exemplary the band has needed Youth back in the fold for sure.

Interesting take on Lombardo for Slayer. His drum sound has become integral to Slayer over the years but I would actually attribute that to Rick Rubin who made that band.

In those terms I probably would rank Youth higher. I do definitely admire him quite a bit as a producer. But when I was doing those rankings I was thinking more in terms of which components I enjoy the most in a given KJ song, not so much writing or production duties. I honestly like all the members I listed a hell of a lot so it was hard to rank them at all, but I put Grohl where I put him because his drumming on the one album he was on is so mind-blowingly good to me that I feel he deserves special mention even though he was just filling the seat. The funny thing is I really never even gave Grohl much notice as a drummer until I heard that album.

I don't know man, he's a fantastic drummer even when Rick Rubin isn't involved.

Hell Awaits, Slayer's vastly underrated masterpiece, came out before Rick Rubin came along. Controversially, I honestly think it's a much stronger album than both Reign in Blood, and Seasons in the Abyss. In the sense it feels truly psychotic, unpredictable, and entirely lacking formula.

Magma:

Christian Vander > Klauz Blazquiz(vastly underrated lead singer, imo) > Jannick Top > Stella Vander > All the people in the band I don't know the name of

Led Zeppelin:

Jimmy Page > John Bonham > Robert Plant > John Paul Jones

The Beatles:

John > George >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Paul >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ringo

Naked City (This one may be difficult... So tempted to cheat and use = for the first 3 but won't):

John Zorn > Eye > Fred Frith > Joey Baron > Bill Frisell > Wayne Horvitz

It's funny, this thread makes me realize that for some reason the vast majority of music I listen to are from solo artists that only having backing bands or whatnot.

But anyways... and these rankings have more to do with the musician's general personality/aura if you know what I mean, not just their skill as a musician, which now that I think about is a really dumb way to rate musicians but fuck it, I'm already done.

The Beatles: George > John > Ringo > Paul

The Velvet Underground (and friends): John Cale > Nico > Sterling Morrison > Maureen Tucker > Doug Yule > Lou Reed

The Smiths: Johnny Marr > Morrissey > Andy Rourke > Mike Joyce

Lou Reed always seemed like a total **** to me, hence the low standing.

(Can their be anybody else first?)

Dinosaur Jr.
Mascis > Murph > Barlow

(Trios generally have an obvious choice)

The Black Keys
Dan > Pat

I'm touched. :D

As much as I love Frusciante's early output with the Peppers, I blame him for the direction they later took and have tremendous respect for Slovak's guitar work (which Frusciante pretty much copied early on)...
