Rank the members of your favorite bands
There's some bands we know inside and out, so this is a thread about those bands and their members. Rank the members based on how much you appreciate their technical ability/how charming they are/how important you feel they are to the band, whatever.
The Clash Strummer>Jones>Simonon>Headon Mastodon Brann Dailor>Bill Kelliher>Troy Sanders>Brent Hinds Alexisonfire George Pettit>Chris Steele>Wade MacNeil>Dallas Green>Jordan Hastings Green Day Billie Joe>Mike>Tre The Dillinger Escape Plan Ben Weinman=Greg Puciato>Liam Wilson>Jeff Tuttle>Billy Rymer |

There aren't too many bands for which I'm capable of rating the members. But here is one.

Slayer
Lombardo > Hanneman & King > Bostaph > Araya Bauhaus Daniel Ash > Kevin Haskins > Peter Murphy > David J Killing Joke Jaz > Geordie > Grohl > Atkins > Ferguson > Youth > Raven > everyone else Faith No More Mike Patton > Jim Martin > Roddy Bottum > Billy Gould > Trey Spruance > Mike Bordin > Jon Hudson > Chuck Mosley (this last one is funny for me because Trey Spruance is probably one of my favorite guitarists ever but I just don't feel that his contributions to FNM were that amazing) |

Interesting take on Lombardo for Slayer. His drum sound has become integral to Slayer over the years but I would actually attribute that to Rick Rubin who made that band. |

So tempted to cheat and use = for the first 3 but won't): John Zorn > Eye > Fred Frith > Joey Baron > Bill Frisell > Wayne Horvitz |
It's funny, this thread makes me realize that for some reason the vast majority of music I listen to are from solo artists that only having backing bands or whatnot.
But anyways... and these rankings have more to do with the musician's general personality/aura if you know what I mean, not just their skill as a musician, which now that I think about is a really dumb way to rate musicians but fuck it, I'm already done. The Beatles: George > John > Ringo > Paul The Velvet Underground (and friends): John Cale > Nico > Sterling Morrison > Maureen Tucker > Doug Yule > Lou Reed The Smiths: Johnny Marr > Morrissey > Andy Rourke > Mike Joyce Lou Reed always seemed like a total **** to me, hence the low standing. |
Machine Head
Phil Demmel > Robb Flynn > Dave McClain > Adam Duce |
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Flea > Slovak > Frusciante > Martinez > Smith > Irons > Navarro > Kiedis > Sherman (Whew, I'm winded. Flea first, duh. At least Kiedis is ahead of Sherman!) Primus Claypool > Ler > Lane > Brain (Can their be anybody else first?) Dinosaur Jr. Mascis > Murph > Barlow (Trios generally have an obvious choice) The Black Keys Dan > Pat (For LULZ) |

As much as I love Frusciante's early output with the Peppers, I blame him for the direction they later took and have tremendous respect for Slovak's guitar work (which Frusciante pretty much copied early on)... |

Why does everyone love Brian Jones? He was a bit of a pratt tbh.
|
^^ we all love a guy who dressed in a Nazi uniform for fun
|
Keef is the best and I hate you for putting him last. He makes the band.
|
^^ he's just playing the same three chords on a G-tuned guitar over and over again
