I can't think of a single band from Idaho, let alone a favorite.

I'm doing my list right now and I have Doug Martsch from Built To Spill. I had the most trouble with Hawaii and Delaware.

Cab Calloway is from Delaware so that's easy for me.

Hawaiʻi is tough but Taj Mahal has lived there for years so he's a possible contender even though that's not where he's from originally.

I used Television for Delaware because half the members went to school there. I'll use Taj Mahal for Hawaii I think, thanks.

Janszoon 01-22-2011 08:34 AM

Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montanta, and Wyoming are also ones I'd have trouble with I think.

James 01-22-2011 08:35 AM

Give it a go!

Man I don't know. On the one hand you have states like the ones I've mentioned where you're really scraping the barrel to come up with anything, and on the other hand you have states like California and New York where it's like how do you choose from the zillions of bands.

James 01-22-2011 08:40 AM

Yeah, new york, illinois, california and georgia have all been hard to choose from so far. But that's what makes this topic interesting imo, it's strange how the artist are spread out.

It's not that strange really. The three largest cities in the US are in California, New York and Illinois so it's not surprising that those places are culture magnets for their regions. Meanwhile states like Idaho, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montanta, and Wyoming are very sparsely populated so it's not surprising that there isn't much going on musically.

I guess so yeah, I think it's a fun way to pass the time anyway. I've learned a lot about various cities music scenes today.

That's cool. I always think it's interesting how certain cities become magnets for specific musical styles. Like how in the 80s you had all these glam bands coming out of L.A. even though most of the people involved weren't from there originally.

Jedey 01-22-2011 09:24 AM

Black Flag IS California punk rock :)

James 01-22-2011 10:05 AM

I had some sort of mix up I guess. I'll change it. Doing 50 states is hard work.

EDIT: Turns out I got confused because of something I read about Black Flag refusing to play in Florida. *facepalm*

Okay here's mine. There were a few states where I just couldn't come up with anything. I have to say I'm a little surprised one of them was West Virginia—I figured there'd be some bluegrass musician I liked from there but I found nothing.

Alabama—Sun Ra
Alaska
Arizona—Machines of Loving Grace
Arkansas—Johnny Cash
California—Mike Patton maybe? It's way too hard to choose.
Colorado—DeVotchKa
Connecticut—Mates of State
Delaware—Cab Calloway
Florida—Death
Georgia—REM
Hawai'i—Taj Mahal
Idaho—DoseOne
Illinois—My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult
Indiana—Racebannon
Iowa—The Everly Brothers
Kansas—Charlie Parker
Kentucky—Loretta Lynn
Louisiana—Professor Longhair
Maine—Alias
Maryland—Trans Am
Massachusetts—They Might Be Giants
Michigan—Stevie Wonder
Minnesota—Bob Mould
Mississippi—Howlin' Wolf
Missouri—Chuck Berry
Montana—Steve Albini
Nebraska—The Faint
Nevada—7 Seconds
New Hampshire—Torrez
New Jersey—Dalek
New Mexico
New York—Swans
North Carolina—John Coltrane
North Dakota—Bobby Vee
Ohio—Devo
Oklahoma—Flaming Lips
Oregon—The Decemberists
Pennsylvania—Man Man
Rhode Island—Lightning Bolt
South Carolina–James Brown
South Dakota
Tennessee—His Hero Is Gone
Texas—Scratch Acid
Utah
Vermont—Phish (I don't even like them but they're the only Vermont band I can think of so I guess they're my "favorite")
Virginia—Pig Destroyer
Washington—The Microphones
West Virginia
Wisconsin—Violent Femmes
Wyoming

Janszoon 01-22-2011 10:37 AM

Heh. I just discovered that Jewel was born in Utah and grew up in Alaska so that actually covers two of the hard states. If you happen to like Jewel.

bob. 01-22-2011 10:42 AM

I just went through all my favorite bands on Facebook. Like hell if I'm going to do "Music by (state)" in wiki for every state.

It's hard since 99% of my favorite musicians either come from California, Japan, or Europe.

James 01-22-2011 01:26 PM

Ohio has a surprisingly large amount of good bands.

bob. 01-22-2011 01:27 PM

yes tons of good bands....but only one legendary perfect super crazy awesome amazing band :)

I chose The National, because I listen to them a hell of a lot. But Devo were certainly a contender.

As are Combustible Edison, The Amazing Crowns and, technically, Talking Heads.

That's because it's a fairly populous state with several mid-size cities. It's all a part of the pattern my friend. :)

CanwllCorfe 01-22-2011 01:49 PM

I don't listen to enough American artists to make such a list. :( I went through all my music and got around 10-11 states.
