Most Respected Musician?

Out of all the musicians in the world, who do you respect the most?

Nosferatu Man 04-12-2011 05:51 AM

Massive question!

I think I might have to go with Paul Weller. Not my favourite musician, just one of them. But in every interview I have ever seen he has been the right blend of funny, informative, intelligent and non-hypocritical!

I guess as musicians I would respect Roger Waters or Bob Dylan more for example but maybe not as all around people.

I respect myself the most, cos I churn out the most interesting music around.

Srsly - it'd be either Johnny Cash or Bob Dylan.....

I am a massive Dylan fan but I couldn't have the same respect for him after this interview.

There is something in the way he deems the reporter to be beneath him that I disliked.

^^is that from Don't Look Back? - it's generally regarded as "self-parody".....

he was pretty much a dick in the mid-60s cos everybody regarded him as the Last Prophet or something - it's mostly an act - judging from his autobiography Chronicles Vol. 1, I don't think he's like that at all

Tom Petty.

Wayfarer 04-12-2011 01:03 PM

Frank Zappa, probably.

DreamingOfAlbion 04-12-2011 02:28 PM

Joe Strummer, definitely.

Thom Yorke 04-12-2011 02:42 PM

Tom Waits. He's been at it forever. Respect.

Sun Ra. Not only do I obsessively adore his music. He was one of the most independently outspoken people around.

He said what he wanted to, thought what he wanted to, made whatever music he wanted to. Hand assembled album covers, and ran his own operation. Entirely so he could be barred from compromise.

Add that to being a self educated, well read, and musically prodigious black youth in the 1920s, and you have an unsung American Hero.
