What Musicians Have You Met?
Have you ever had any run-ins with any musicians?

I randomly met Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip in Kingston a couple years ago in a grocery store. I just said I was a big fan and actually talked with him briefly about the Boston Bruins (I know his Godfather is Harry Sinden). I don't think he still lives in Kingston so it was interesting to see him back there and buying groceries. I also met up with Bon Jovi in a Toronto restroom. He's not as big-headed as you'd think.

No real cool stories from me. I was into the sort of music you hear at Warped Tour back when I was in highschool. Me and a friend went to Warped Tour a few years in a row, and one year we got to meet the lead singer of Bayside. My buddy was a huge Byaside fan at the time and we were front row for their set, and like 10 minutes after the set the lead singer came out along the side fencing kinda where we were standing and signed my friend stuff and chit-chatted for a few minutes. Can't remember the conversation, it was short, and I imagine it was something along the lines of "DUDE U ROCK" and "Thanks man" and not much substance beyond that.
Coolest moment of my life was seeing Method Man live last year. Him and Redman jumped off the VIP balcony and crowd surfed their way into the bar area of this small venue. I mean really small venue. I have no idea why they were playing there. I'm standing by the bar and all of a sudden Meth and Redman are standing right beside me. It was the only time I've ever been like completely star struck and breathless. Like seeing method man directly beside me, I think i may have **** myself at that moment. I shook his hand and still haven't washed it. So that's all i really got, lame I know. |

I met Dick from Subhumans a couple years ago at a bar here in Philly. He was crusty but nice, everything you'd expect a cool old punk to be.
|
John Pope from Symphony In Peril ran into him before a show and me and my friend ate lunch with him and he brought us back into the band area at a music festival here in Minnesota.

My meets probably won't be as "cool" as some others may likely be, but:
First meet: Smoked a blunt with the drummer of Australian punk band Phrenzal Rhomb, while playing a show in Houma, LA circa 96 or somewhere around there. Less Than Jake was the headliner, and afterwards we [the band I was in] ate at a hole-in-the-wall cajun restaurant with LTJ, although they thought they were too good to talk to us, even though (in my mind) we kicked their asses on stage because we had the local population on our side, and we were already known for riot-starting sorts of behaviors. :D Second meet: In Germany, some friends and I went to a He Is Legend show at a small venue and convinced Schuylar and Mitch (yea it was when Mitch was still strumming) to go drinking with us. Had an all-nighter. This was when they were touring with Norma Jean, and yes, Cory Putman showed up as well. I bought him a beer, can't remember what kind, I was drunk... Also saw him messing around with a girl in the guy's bathroom... as far as I knew at that time, he was both married, and a Christian....... dot dot. Hrmm.. Haven't really met anyone else that anyone would know. Meaning, no one that really made it or anything. I think the best moment would have to be smoking a blunt with the drummer of Phrenzal Rhomb right before our show. Haven't kept up with them in ages, and I don't even know if they still have the same drummer... but guy, whatever your name is, if you're reading this, you rock. |
I have met P-Diggs from Shapeshifter and the band from The Upbeats. Very cool.

I personally know Jeremy from Iceburn, Jets To Brazil, and Insight. He teaches at a afterschool music/film school that I take classes at. Also the manager Matt was in Stella Brass and a played in a few other 90s emo bands. Its awesome to hear all the bands they have played with and the people they are friends with.

I've met Paul Simon in Singapore, he was a total dick
My conversation was a few words, he muttered something unintelligible and went up to his room with a Chinese chick who loked like a prostitute, the next day he cleared out the entire hotel lobby just to avoid any more "chance" encounters others:- I've had tea with the guitarist from local pub legends Storm and I've jammed with the drummer from the then up-and-coming Malay rock band Sofia edit - I was also pretty chummy with Malaysian songwriter Jenny Chin Abdullah (she wrote some pretty big Mando-pop hits for Taiwanese singers) |
I haven't met any yet, but I do know a girl who is related to Canadian Idol winning Wonder Boy Calen Porter. :pimp:
|
I've only ever met the Vines face-to-face in Cambridge many moons agao, not to mention mates of mine who are in some local bands. I've been to a few local gigs and talked to some of the performers over a smoke as well if all counts. I've talked to Tony Vsiconti and Mike Garson online too, but that's hardly meeting someone eh.

I got really drunk with the guys from Portugal. The Man after a show in Hoboken.
This was just before they released "Church Mouth" and was such a tiny stage. There only must have been like 50 people that showed up for the show and they played pretty long. After the show they literally hopped off the stage considering it was the only way to hop off the stage and they came right towards us and told us to get drunk with them. So we did. ****ing cool guys. |

I have met Chan Marshall (Cat Power) and have had the priviledge of chattingwith her at length on several occassions.
I also met Henry Rollins in what were billion to one circumstances. I went to Birmingham (in the UK not Alabama) to see the Dark Knight at the cinema and when I came out I was walking to the bus stop and Henry came up to me saying "that Black Flag shirt is so gay man." I just happened to be wearing the only Black Flag shirt I owned at the time. It turned out that he was in Birmingham to do a spoken word show (which I ended up going to - he was hilarious). Anyway we spoke for about 5 minutes and had a nice talk. He's a funny guy off stage as well but he has a very intense stare. He stares right through you. I don't think he means anything by it though. Ive also very briefly met Judah Bauer (he was playing guitar in Cat Power but I didnt really think much of him) and Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine. I didnt really get to say too much to them though. Patti Smith too but it was just a quick hello. |
I once met the bassist from Into Eternity. I got to a show late and missed Into Eternity's set and had no idea what they looked like. And then after another band's set I was talking to these guys outside and they kept making fun of Into Eternity's bassist for some reason, and I find out later that he had been standing there talking to us the whole time.

I am learning some percussion from a guy who has played with Buddy Guy and Ed Soph before.

damn you guys have met some of my favorites I wish you'd elaborate.
The only one that stands out is when I met the guy from The Toasters, Robert Hingley. Me and my friends were all like fourteen and we hadn't been to many shows. we were their early and he was hanging out at the merch table and we all went up while one of my friends bought a shirt and we talked to him. he was really cool and gave us some guitar picks and stuff. i thought it was so cool i emailed spoonboy and he was so col. he added me on facebook. |
I've met the Feelies, which I thought was pretty cool. Can't think of anyone else...
the Proclaimers I guess. Not sure if that's something to be proud of. |
My friends and I bailed on Micky Dolenz (of The Monkees) and his sister Coco a few years back to go to a party.
I also met Eddie Money, and he's the creepiest individual I think I've ever spoken too. Smarmy as all hell. Also, horribly humiliating, but Billy Ray Cyrus is from here, and during the height of his "Achy Breaky Heart" fame, he came to the local hospital for an appearance. My grandmother was one of the head nurses, and managed to make it so I was allowed to be there and meet him, and I ended up hugging him and refusing to let go. The Judds, (Naomi, and Wynonna and Ashley, but she's not a musician) are also from Ashland, and I've met them. Oh, and I high-fived Todd Snider when he was in Ashland and walking down the street. Aside from that, I've not really "met" any musicians so much as just talked to them briefly while they were signing stuff. |
Stephanie Sun (Singaporean Mando-Pop idol) came to my former church once, as it was the Malaysian branch of City Harvest, the Singaporean church she goes to - everybody crowded arond for autographs and photos - i remember not having much interest, finding her songs boring, and she's skinny and gaunt
now if Penny Tan turned up (local Mando-Pop idol)........... |

Go to concerts of bands that are not too big :D.
I shook Joey Burns hand (from Calexico), talked to Dave Wilson (from Chatham County Line) and waved goodbye to Paul Butler from the Bees. Haha, last week I ran into a guy in the Music Store and got talking with him. He said he had to play on a rather big festival (Roadburn) with his band. So I said 'well in that case you're getting pretty big, should I recognize you?'. He replied 'naaah, don't think you should'. So I asked 'what band?'. He said 'Sungrazer'. And I'm glad I could reply 'dude, i've got your EP and Debut album in my record cabinet and I've seen you perform life in Susteren' :D. Pretty local, but still quite cool. Reason I didn't recognize him is that he's pretty small and he's the drummer :D. Eitherway, I got a sneak preview of one of the tracks on their new album. There's this one track they will master at Abbey Road (yeah!) and I heard the unmastered version. |
The norwegian filmstar Kristoffer Joner. He is a chilled man and knows how to make you smile.
|
Peter Steele
Popa Chubby Ozzy Osbourne JJ Grey And Mofro Marilyn Manson The guys from Mudvayne And lots of local and small bands. |
Marilyn Manson seems like he could be one of two ways, the biggest douche on the planet, or the nicest guy.
|
I met Eddie Vedder once. He's a really nice guy.
I've always wanted to meet Lemmy from Motorhead. I've heard he's one of the nicest rock stars out there. |
I've met half the members of the Doomtree hip hop collective back in May. They did a show at a really crappy lounge during finals week, so the show was pretty barren but it was very intimate and meant I got to talk to Dessa, Sims, and Lazberbeak. Dessa was a little bit more distracted but we got to talk about books for a good five minutes, but it was Sims who I got the most face time with, chatting with him while he smoked one of my American Spirits. He was an awesome guy and someone I could easily have seen myself being friends with we went to school together. I really enjoyed his album Bad Times Zoo (2011) and picked his brain on some of the songs, he was pretty humble too.
In 2010 I got to briefly speak with Aesop Rock after a show. I use to listen to the song "9-5er's Anthem" on my walk to work at 5:30 in the morning and he was happy that his music meant so much to me. I wish I had a camera though, I would have loved to have gotten a picture with him. I'm not sure if this one will count though but when I was a little kid, my mum and I would go to the a&b sound on Seymour street in downtown Vancouver where metal musician Devin Townsend use to work. He always frightened me because of his appearance. I never spoke to him though, so I guess that doesn't really count. |
