Bob Dylan and his delivery
Bob is without a doubt a great song writer, performer and stage presence..........but he has had an odd genesis............not many people have had greater success with people covering your songs than you have had doing them yourself.
I just wondered are there any Dylan songs where his original eclipses the covers? If so , what are they ? |
Wait, so you're asking if there are dylan songs that are better than dylan covers?
Well... All of them. There are a few covers that are almost just as good, but that's really it. |
I tend to agree with s_k above
but just for argument's sakes, I'd say his version of "Percy's Song" trumps Fairport Convention's cover, and many people disagree with me on that can't post the youchoob of it simply cos it's not available you can find it on Biograph  |
s_k, I fixed the video you posted.
Of course Dylan's original songs are better than the covers. Like s_k has said, there are a few that come close to being better, but that's all. |
The Stripes' cover of One More Cup of Coffee and Hendrix' cover of All Along the Watchtower are the only covers that are better than the originals as I know. I can imagine there being more potential for superior covers of his recent songs though, seeing as how awful his voice is these days. I must say that the Byrd's cover of Mr. Tambourine Man is one of the worst covers in the world, I can never figure how it got so popular.

All Along the Watchtower is one of the only covers I'd ever consider better than the original, for any artist.

He sounded like a muppet on the grammys. Almost like hes been gargling with hand grenades.

If the question were to be asked the other way around, you'd have better discussion. For example, Dylan's greats are often covered, but not better. His terrible songs however were picked up, dusted off, and made great by The Greatful Dead. He's said so himself.

I also like this slackers cover of "I Shall be Released" Dylan did some pretty great covers himself, though! He made an album called "Dylan" in 1973. Consists of covers. There's also a later album called "Dylan". Don't mix them up. |
