For me, this album provides a very solitary listening experience. Melancholy is a feeling I'm comfortable with, and actually quite enjoy, so this ticks all the right boxes for me. My favourite albums are those that have a depth to them, and it's the depth of Alone I Admire that allows me to fully immerse myself in the music.

As I said in my write up, it's a piece that evokes a feeling of isolation - a sense of detachment - and I'm one of those people that often needs such an escape. Bills, rent, social anxiety, fears about the future... They all temporarily disappear from my thought process, replaced by these romantic notions of a wintery evening. That's why I personally find it so satisfying - it's a release, it stirs the mind, cleansing it of its impurities and putting things into perspective.

Default Alone I Admire

I liked Stu`s description of how this album works for him. It`s a reminder of something that is true for all of us; "In my mind I still need a place to go," is how Neil Young put it on one of his own melancholy tracks. I like sad music too, but I didn`t particularly enjoy this album, and here`s why:-

This all goes back to bands like Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, back to 70's ambient music like Brian Eno and back to classical music and beyond. I once read in an interview with Slowdive where they said that their biggest aim was to create music that doesn't force any thoughts or emotions on the listener , and to allow the listener to interpret their music in their own way. This is definitely true for this album, there's so many different ways to interpret it.
^ This kind of approach sounds quite commendable in theory - how pure, how austere, how intellectual. The problem is that it`s also very restricting, because out go things like human warmth and musical excitement and if you are not careful you are left with not much more than an inoffensive electronic wash. For myself, I feel as if I`ve already heard loads of albums like Alone I Admire . After all, it`s not so long ago that we reviewed The Sounds Of The Sounds Of Silence, which was in a similar style.

Anyway, Alone I Admire fits the wintry theme pretty well and, of its kind is actually better than average, but it`s not for me; I`m usually too hyped up with caffine and the modern world to succumb to the exalted beauty that Auburn Lull is aiming for.

There is the danger of that of course and I come across music like that occasionally, usually with some certain electronic music. You have to be careful though not to completely alienate the listener, I think this album strikes a good balance. But then again there is nothing wrong really with a lack of human warmth, it can add to a feeling of detachment from reality and even euphoria. It all depends on the listener's perspective.

By the way what will happen if this current poll ends in a tie?

1) What are this albums' strengths?
-It provides an ambient, introverted atmosphere, and gives off a slightly mysterious feeling.

2) What are its weaknessess?
-It's weaknesses are about the same as it's strengths. It all depends on the mindset you have listening to it.

3) How does it compare to the artist's other work?
-I have no idea.

4) Favourite songs?
-It really blended all together into one seamless piece of music, so it's hard to say.

5) What feelings did this album evoke?
-A vastness, that bordered on wondrous and depressed. Again, it all depends on the mindset you hear this album in.

6) How does this album fit into your regular rotation?
-Not sure how it will. It would be great background/study music, but my jazz rotation takes care of that need.

7) What stood out to you about this album's themes, musically/lyrically?
-Again, a lot to do with loneliness and solitude.

8) If you've had any noteworthy experiences with this album, what have they been?
-The second time I listened to this, I had a slideshow of Hubble Space Telescope pictures playing on my TV. It was very nice.

9) What do you know about this album's creation? Any interesting facts or anecdotes?
I got nothing.

10) How does this album represent the chosen theme?
-I think it had more of a cosmic feel, rather than a winter feel.

11) How does this album compare to other albums nominated for this theme?
-We had a very eclectic mix of albums, so it fit in by not really fitting it at all.

12) How does this album compare to others in its genre?
-My ambient collection is small but growing. Of the newer discoveries I've made, I like this one the most.

13) Can you recommend similar albums to this?
-Not an album, but I was constantly reminded of the first 4 minutes of the track 'In a Silent Way' by Miles Davis.

14) What does this album's artwork say about it? Is it well paired with the music?
-This could have had just about any album cover and it would have matched in someway.

^ Yep, you`re both right. In fact, anyone who disagrees with you is disagreeing with Brian Eno himself :-

Quote:
Brian Eno is generally credited with coining the term "Ambient Music" in the mid-1970s to refer to music that, as he stated, can be either "actively listened to with attention or as easily ignored, depending on the choice of the listener".

TWO people have submitted AOTYs so far. It's easy to forget the club what with Christmas and all, but unless you want to choose between two albums, you'd better get on the submissions!
