I will tell anyone who is reluctant to persevere that the next disc is considerably better than the first. It's more diverse, and employs some synths, and while it's still fairly run of the mill, the songwriting is much more memorable overall. Disc 2 isn't bad, where Disc 1 was boring. Epitaph for My Heart has a great melody to it. I wish I remembered more stand out tracks from the first half, but as I was interrupted during this disc and finished it in two parts, I've forgotten them.

Still though, I would listen to this disc again, and I'm hoping that the trend continues and Disc 3 is more solid yet.

Unfortunately, Disc 3 is a return to ho-hum. If you're only going to listen to one disc of 69 Love Songs, I would recommend you pick Disc 2.

Ja I gave the trio a good listen and found the second disc to be the best as well. Although I didn't find it particularly great, I still liked it as a mediocre album.

I sampled quite a bit of it and wasn't impressed at all, I just felt it was incredibly mediocre and uninteresting. At first I wasn't going to bother posting on it, then I randomly came across a Stephen Merritt quote that really irked me and made it clear(to me at least) why the music was so uninteresting.
"Music is like cooking, sincerity has nothing to do with it"
So wrong on so many levels, and shows why his music is so uninteresting-no heart.

You know, the negative response from all the club members really prompts me to ask: Why is this considered an indie classic? What business does it have ranking among the greatest records of its genre and year?

There isn't anything wrong with the record, apart from its length. But remember that this forum is home to more than your stereotypical indie fan who go with the wind, so opinions will differ.

Right, well to be honest, one of the sources of its acclaim that I'm looking at is RYM, which doesn't draw a lot of casual music fans, and not only is it in the top 300 albums overall, but it's 5th in indie pop, and 4th for 1999.

RYM probably doesn't mean a lot to many people, but as a member of its community and someone who uses it as their staple resource, it kind of annoying to see such a soulless release receive so much attention.

EDIT: I agree that there's nothing, apart from length, really wrong with this album, but I think it's worthwhile to note that there isn't anything it nailed either. It's kind of an epitome of mediocrity.
