Do you feel this way simply because you have a different opinion than (what would seem like) most others?

For me, this album is a clear 4.5/5, if I were to rate it on RYM. I would say there's a plethora of excellent songs, with simple, lush arrangements, three different vocalists who are all distinctive with excellent voices, and some fucking amazing lyrics. The only thing that prevents it from being a perfect indie pop album is the fact that there's some undeniable filler songs. To be expected from an album with 69 tracks, and some, like Punk Love, Experimental Music Love, etc - are where the band's clearly just goofing around. I would rather they weren't on the album but I can forgive based on the amount of fantastic songs that are on the album.

Now, I can see how one might find this album boring, especially if they've only listened once or twice - and I realize the length can dissuade people from listening again - but if you don't dig an album, that certainly doesn't mean others who rate it highly are doing it simply because that's what they are 'meant' or 'supposed' to do. Which seems to be what you're implying, here. This album, to me, is about as good as this genre gets. Fair enough if it isn't your thing, but I'm sure virtually NONE of the people on RYM who gave this 4 or 5 stars did so out of some indie-cred compulsion, rather than simply the fact that they enjoy a top notch fuckin' album.

I was basing my claim on the results of the discussion. At the point when I said it, not one person had stood up and said it was a good album. Really, I was just pondering reasons why all club participants didn't think it deserved its reputation.

I'm glad to see another point of view, honestly, though it didn't tell me much about why it's considered a classic of its genre--just that it's apparently not our thing.

The second paragraph of my statement would explain its appeal, I believe. Put simply - it's simple and well-composed, lush, orchestral pop with three very good vocalists and fantastic, witty lyrics jam-packed with interesting rhyming ideas. That's my opinion of it, anyway, and from what I gather, many others' too. That's its appeal, that's why some people regard it a classic of its genre. If you're into that sort of thing, I implore you to listen to it until you (hopefully) come to love it, as I did - and if you're not, or just can't be bothered, then don't! At this point, I'd say about 50 of the 69 songs are good or better - a number which has steadily increased over time, with many repeated listens.

One thing that irritates me, though, is when people suggest albums like this one are somehow living on their reputation alone. This is definitely not the case - many, many people, like me, genuinely love this album. Even if you think it's the worst album ever made, it's kind of insulting to someone who does love the album to sweepingly suggest that it is being "falsely rated" based on its reputation or whatever, just because you yourself didn't enjoy it. I would rate it 4.5/5 simply because I love it, not because I'm 'meant to' - and I bet most others on RYM are the same.

Honestly, I wouldn't have suggested it if even one person in this club had stood up for it before you. I was thinking out loud about why so many of us were disinterested in it, and that is all.

I actually really enjoyed the album also. At times it did get a bit tedious to listen to, but each disc did have some great songs on it. I most likely wont go through the album again anytime soon, but there are a few songs on it that I will returnto. I'm interested in check out some more of their stuff, this was the first I heard of them, and this album certainly peaked my interest.

If I honestly had to rate the album I would give it a 4/5.
