Have You Ever Destroyed an Album?

Either intentionally or by accident.

One time I had a CD (it was my brother's copy) and put a ring around around the edge by pressing on it as I spun it in the portable disc player. I think I was curious to know how hard I had to press to actually get it to happen, plus it wasn't my copy, plus I may have been mad at him for something.

I think that's the only time I've ever intentionally harmed an album.

Accidentally, I may have dropped a disc on the pavement and scratched it once or twice, if that.

Well, not an album, but my original copy of Tekken 3 was destroyed by my brother truing to make it more 'shiny' by using water.
I was pissed.

I've had a few cassettes get tangled up and destroyed inside the tape deck but I've never had any CDs destroyed. I suppose that's one of the strong points of a CD, they're very durable and not easily damaged. Although there are some CDs I've bought over the years that I wouldn't mind destroying.

I ended up throwing a couple childhood CDs in the microwave. Will Smith maybe. Just cause I needed any CD to explode. CDs in microwaves are fun.

I had a little hobby of taking CDs that didn't burn properly and were useless to make weird designs in it. I would take a lighter and melt the CD some then throw it in the freezer so the design stays put.

Howard the Duck 08-24-2011 01:08 AM

i only wilfully destroyed one CD before - it was an Ohio Players comp of their early hits

i thought that it was a comp of their funk hits, but no, it has some of the ****tiest soul pastiches ever - i burnt it literally with a lighter

on a side note, i have a multiple personality disorder, during an episodes, i threw away a few "demonic" CDs:-

Slayer - Reign in Blood
Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power (Bowie mix)
The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators

and a ton of pirated DVDs, mostly gory and violent stuff

TockTockTock 08-24-2011 01:14 AM

I have destroyed many albums... through the use of this little tool here:

I ordered The New York Dolls Roir Sessions album from a mail order company and ended up being sent The Mekons New York live album (Also on Roir so I can see how they made the mistake)

I phoned them and told them of the error and they sent me the right one without asking for The Mekons album back.
I listened to it, thought it was shit, and then decided to use it as a ninja star against the shed door.

Shaun of the Dead - Vinyls - YouTube

Once destroyed my sisters collection of Shaun Cassidy records. Da doo run run will never hold a place in my heart.

I once destroyed a fucking amazing split EP by leaving the CD on my window seal on a hot summer's day. Totally warped the bugger, and I was gutted. Since that, I try to treat my albums with more care.

Destroyed plenty of vinyl. Man that stuff was temperamental. Leave it in the sun - warped. Drop the needle on it - scratched. Knock the record arm - scratched. Lend collection to a dj - collection ****ed. I really don't miss having my music punctuated by scritch pop crack thud (that last one's the sound of the record arm taking a flying leap off a warp).

Paedantic Basterd 08-24-2011 10:57 PM

I don't think so. I have a bag of crap CDs somewhere which are probably scratched to the point they won't play, but I don't think it counts unless it was dramatic or especially stupid.

i have just recently obtained some vinyl rips

the pop and crackle is antiquated, to say the least

Played quite a bit of vinyl frisbee, back in the pre-digital age.
And there's nothing quite like the thrill of vinyl skeet shooting!

Dayvan Cowboy 08-25-2011 09:54 AM

I found a bunch of CDs from back when I liked enya and hot hot heat. They were pirated low quality and burnt on a CD, but I definitely thought it was fun to find them years later and scratch them up with sewing needles and hear them skip in the CD player.

Farfisa 08-25-2011 10:08 AM

I used to set things I listened to when I was a kid on fire. I found stuff like Spice Girls and Hansen in my cd collection when I was 15 or 16 and decided to burn them to be hxc.

ThePhanastasio 08-26-2011 12:47 AM

I ritualistically burned a copy of Nickelback's Silver Side Up. I was in the parking lot of the local mall, and picked up a CD case (with disc inside) off of the ground. Instead of being a civil human being and taking it to the mall office to see if the owner claimed it (then again, who in God's name would ever claim that?!), I burned it.

My friends and I were going camping (we were at the mall to purchase head lamps) and we threw the fucker into the fire. And then drank beer and celebrated.

Buzzov*en 08-26-2011 01:10 AM

I have a few times. Threw a few cds out the window while driving. IDK why either. Just was pissed and didn't want them anymore.

TheNiceGuy 08-26-2011 03:50 AM

I think I used a Kylie Minogue album as a Christmas decoration once years back. To be fair it probably was better hanging on my Christmas tree then being listened to!

geeRox 08-26-2011 10:24 AM

I remember sitting on my copy of StreetSounds NY vs LA Beats, Id just bought it grrrr

Michael Scott Miller 09-01-2011 06:43 AM

Years ago, I found the Flirts album with Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime) on vinyl in a bargain bin and bought it because the hit song was kind of a catchy, guilty pleasure.

To say the rest of the album was awful would be generous. On my next trip to that record store (Cheap Thrills in New Brunswick), in my friend's convertible, I launched the album onto the NJ Turnpike.

ScribbledInthestars 09-02-2011 08:08 PM

Encore by Eminem. That album is so crappy, it's not funny. I burned it.

izzystar 09-11-2011 04:46 AM

lol umm not on purpose dont think yet-- but if somethin was really rubbish i'd destroy it somehow - no problem lol

Insane Guest 09-11-2011 08:12 AM

Crappy albums just happen to make great frisbees. So yes I have, and quite a few.
Don't remember what the albums were but they were ****.

Bulldog 09-12-2011 02:32 AM

I used Limp Bizkit's Chocolate Starfish as an ashtray. I remember running over my copy of Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory with my bike too.

Flyingpig437 09-12-2011 05:24 AM

When I was drunk and 17 in 88 I'd heard about Johnny Rotten's Pink Floyd t-shirt so defenestrated somone's copy of Animals. As evinced by my dp and username I love that album now.

killcreek 11-24-2011 02:10 AM

i stepped on a CD and broke it once by accident

s_k 11-24-2011 11:51 AM

I've even skated on vinyl records.
No kidding, really bad German music, mainly.
One record under each foot, a rope, a car and off ya go :D

Chives 11-24-2011 01:35 PM

I used to destroy AOL trial discs when I as younger but I've never had the same anger towards music albums. And I'm careful not to do it on accident, I guess.

neverasitseems 11-24-2011 01:38 PM

My dog ate my "Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 9" CD when I was about 10... good riddance. And I'm still surprised that my dog was fine after eating a CD..

LoathsomePete 11-24-2011 01:41 PM

On the drive to the gym this morning I destroyed my burned CD of Neurosis' The Eye of Every Storm because it refused to register in my CD player. This is more a problem with my shitty 13-year old car CD player than the CD, but I still snapped it in half out of frustration.

s_k 11-24-2011 03:33 PM

Pete, you may want to try using a bit more expensive CD's and burn at lower speeds. It can help :)
