John Bonham RIP

Sept 25th 1980, John Bonham, drummer with Led Zeppelin, died aged 32 after a heavy drinking session. ‘Bonzo’ was found dead at guitarists Jimmy Page's house of what was described as asphyxiation, after inhaling his own vomit after excessive vodka consumption, (40 shots in 4 hours). During live sets his drum solo, ‘Moby Dick,’ would often last for half an hour and regularly featured his use of his bare hands.

From the looks of it, this thread should be called:

Spiritinthesky RIP ;)

Freebase Dali 09-25-2011 01:33 AM

Yea, I had a look at some of his previous posts, and there was quite a lot of spam. I don't understand how he got this far.

BastardofYoung 09-25-2011 02:26 AM

let's be honest here folks.... how many people are going to celebrate his life by drinking to it?... show of hands.

that is like the people who leave cigarettes at Bill Hicks grave, or booze at Jim Morrisons... missing the point, but oh well... if I were homeless I would steal the booze, smokes and drugs left there.... so at least somebody is happy.

Howard the Duck 09-25-2011 04:04 AM

any LSD tabs left at Hendrix's grave?

if so, I'll be taking a trip there

Unknown Soldier 09-25-2011 04:10 AM

Whats amazing is that I`ve never ever visted Jim Morrisons grave in Paris despite being a lifelong fan, Paris is like not even an hour by plane and also has a easy rail link for me!

Howard the Duck 09-25-2011 04:31 AM

that reminds me - i really ought to give The Soft Parade or Morrison Hotel a spin

if you get there early enough, most likely.

The Soft Parade easily the weakest album, LSD enchanced most of Jims albums but this is the perfect example where it did the complete opposite. Morrison Hotel a good album but not one of the greats.

The Doors> Strange Days> L.A Woman> Waiting For the Sun> Morrison Hotel>>>>>>The Soft Parade.

The four highlighted are the classics and easily amongst the greatest rock albums ever recorded. I`ve often said the Doors debut is the greatest debut ever released along with the Led Zeppelin debut and the Jimi Hendrix debut.

seriously who would want to sit through a 30 minute plus drunken/drugged drum solo?

"bonzo buried. only three more left"

Wait... are you saying that their debut albums are the best ever released in the history of music or... what?

I seen a video clip on TV with Bonham playing the drums with his hands, man I bet he could play the hell out of a set of bongos and other types of percussion instruments.
"It made my hands hurt" when he hit/crashed the cymbals bare handed though:yikes:.

I don't think that most people (fans) really get to see the full extent of most artist talent and ability (behind the scene) other than what is popular in the media and record sales.

No one ever added (accent) displacement in a syncopation back-beat any better than Bonham could. His sense of timing was impeccable and always seemed to be concentrated toward the basic off-beat style created by John Bohnam himself. His sense of timing along with his ability out measured in comparison to any other drummer in my opinion.

Jaki Liebezeit and Damon Che disagree.

Who do you consider to be one of the best, or is one of your favorite drummers, other than Bonham JP?

I'm just curious, and thought that I would ask.

My favorite drummer is Liebezeit, but... as for the best... I don't really feel qualified in stating who that might be.

BastardofYoung 09-25-2011 06:58 PM

I can only find a few videos from Jaki.... seeing what I think. So far I see nothing that Bonham could have not matched and played back with relative ease.

Maybe I am missing something, or the ones up are just a small taste. But I do not see him being any better than Bonham.

You should be more than qualified in suggesting as to who is the best drummer of your generation Jack Pat or from your favorite era and genre as well.

It doesn't really matter who is the best anyway. Your personal preference and opinion is all that counts. :)

Howard the Duck 09-25-2011 08:21 PM

seconded on Liebzeit, anyway

Anyone else read the thread title and think "Oh no way he died!" only to realize you know he died 30 years ago.

It gives that impression, but yesterdays date when the thread came on was the date he died back in 1980. Basically this should have been mentioned in the Led Zeppelin thread, instead of a new thread started for it.

 I actually did. I knew he had died years ago, so I figured this couldn't be a thread saying that he had just died. I figured it was about Jimmy Paige, then I was like, "Wait, Jimmy Paige is Jimmy Paige". Fail.

BastardofYoung 09-26-2011 10:53 AM

Jimmy Paige Turco

Raust 09-26-2011 06:27 PM

the guy sure could play the hell out of those bongos.

Hahaha that's awesome I just listened to that album last week and it is perfect because The Doors somehow manage to fit into this thread... just like how they just somehow managed to fit into that song!

Jimmy Paige?

Howard the Duck 09-27-2011 01:41 AM

Ellen Paige's songwriting husband

he wrote all of Led Zep's hits, though never credited

anyways, Cliff Burton died 25 years ago today. Bonham is then, Burton is now.. time to move on.

25 is a better number than 31 as well.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-27-2011 10:59 AM

I would mourn the loss off Cliff Burton but he came out of it best.

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-27-2011 11:00 AM

Wait wait wait a minute.

When was the last time it was in vogue to be a jazz fan? I mean, say what you will about them... Elitist? Sure. Pedantic? Absolutely. Hip?

Not so much.

I certainly hope you don't think this about the majority of jazz listeners.
