Prince

Y`know I did a search on him & there`s never been a Prince thread in any forum.Thats just shocking.

I think the fact I had no idea which forum to put him in speaks volumes for his talent. I could have put it in the pop forum , I could have put it in the rap/hip hop forum (As that covers soul & funk).

I could have put it in the Rock forum as I think he`s the most under rated guitarist on the planet and some of his solo piss over some of the more rated rock/metal guitarists whos names usually crop up on any of the 'best guitarists' threads here.

I think the guy was one of the saving graces of mainstream pop in the 80s. Given the choice of having to listen to Thriller & Off The Wall or Purple Rain & Sign O The Times i`d take the Prince albums EVERY time.

hookers with machineguns 04-23-2005 08:11 PM

Purple Rain was hot sh*t.

Sneer 04-23-2005 08:25 PM

never liked princes music though i respect his talent.

Tommyrocker 04-24-2005 01:34 PM

Most beautiful girl in the world, subtle.

FUCK YEAH! I've been listening to Prince's Purple Rain recently and I cannot BELIEVE that I never took Prince seriously. This guy was bloody brilliant. Why has he been so forgotten by the modern younger music community? You NEVER hear people talking about Prince. This guy, unlike Michael Jackson or whoever, was a real actual artist, and a genius at his craft. I could say so much more but I'll leave it to see if this can generate any interest.

The album Purple Rain is immensely good, get it right now or you're an idiot.

FireInCairo 09-17-2008 03:41 AM

how could anyone not love prince?

Fruitonica 09-17-2008 04:00 AM

Arg, I've given up trying to download Purple Rain - something always seems to go inexplicably wrong. From two different sources on megaupload I've downloaded a .rar file which turned out to be seemingly empty....it's only ever happened to me with that one album.

But yeah, Prince is a great artist and the more I hear of him the more I respect him. Until now I never thought of him as a guitarist.

Janszoon 09-17-2008 06:08 AM

I've never been able to really get into Prince on that gut level but I definitely respect his talent. There's no doubt the man's a genius. And damn he put on the best Superbowl halftime show I've ever seen.

Piss Me Off 09-17-2008 06:24 AM

There are very few pop songs as good as I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man.

Wifey Boozer 09-17-2008 06:39 AM

I love Purple Rain<3. I can never listen to it around my mom because her friend died in a car accident back in the day, and all her boyfriend would do was play it over and over in the cafeteria :(.

Molecules 09-17-2008 07:48 AM

purple rain dvd £3 ftw

they should've had him do the soundtrack to the Dark Knight

I respect Prince and all but that would've been awful.

Molecules 09-17-2008 08:08 AM

lol it might have made those 2 and a half hours pass a bit quicker, plus the original Batman soundtrack was nang... ok bad idea

kyleargyle 09-17-2008 08:20 AM

Love Prince. Fantastic guitar player, too.

Akira 09-17-2008 11:35 AM

Prince gets two thumbs up from me as both a recording artist and a musician. He has such an underrated voice, it's almost criminal.

jackhammer 09-17-2008 12:38 PM

I will repeat myself again-Sign 'o The Times is the 80's best Pop record bar none. A superlative album.

Molecules 09-17-2008 12:43 PM

what are everyone's favourite albums? I've only got the two standards (Poiple Rain and Sign) and Batman but apparently that whole late 80's run was brilliant

Urban Hat€monger ? 09-17-2008 12:57 PM

I like Dirty Mind a lot.

I think the Black album is good too. I think the reason a lot of people were down on it was because they were expecting a bit too much from it.

I bought that one after it was released from the vaults in the 90s. I had heard all kinds crazy stuff about it like it was a forerunner of gangsta rap and whatnot. Needless to say I was really disappointed. It's been years and years since I've listened to it (I have it on cassette if that's any indication) so maybe I should go back and give it another chance.

Yeah...and hopefully without the expectation that it was a "forerunner of gangsta rap" (??)

What was the name of that rival group? They brought the funk

you can hear alot of hip-hop in Prince actually. His sheer eclecticism the main draw

I never understood that either. Presumably the person who wrote that review was talking about "Bob George".

There's a vast, vast gulf that lies between having some of elements of hip-hop in your music, and being a "forerunner to gangsta rap".

Molecules 09-18-2008 08:49 AM

wasn't my implication...:shycouch:

ipod junkie 09-18-2008 04:13 PM

Ok so I'm just starting to get interested in Prince but havent heard him perform many songs. I love When Doves Cry performed by Patti Smith, When you were Mine by Tegan and Sara but I cant see Princes originals on You Tube...well I CAN see them just can't hear them.

Why's that?

Fyrenza 09-18-2008 04:50 PM

some sort of silence order

he is a genius
he can/could play any and all instruments in all of his music
he wrote the music and lyrics to his songs
he performs the songs

too bad no one can hear hin on youtube --

Quote:

Twenty eight people, mostly friends and family, had viewed the YouTube video by June, when mom Stephanie Lenz said she received an e-mail from YouTube informing her that her video had been removed from the site at the request of Universal Music Publishing Group, the recording industry's largest label, and warning her that future copyright infringements on her part could force the Web site to cancel her account.
dont know if thats princes wishes or what but i saw that limewire and frostwire supposedly still have his vids available

Molecules 09-18-2008 05:19 PM

On the topic of the youtube silence orders, yes, Prince himself is largely behind it according to what I've read. In fact it's been somewhat of a controversial topic. About a year ago Prince decided he was going to sue both ebay and youtube for their failure to filter out unauthorized content.

Well IMO can't really go past Dirty Mind... Personal favourite from the Prince collection.

I was also a fan of Parade.

I think the dude's just massively anti-internet overall, i'm pretty sure he's against his image being used anywhere at all.

Maybe it's a Jehova's Witness thing.

Fyrenza 09-19-2008 02:52 PM

Yep. He converted a couple years ago. He doesn't play a lot of his more sexual songs in concert any more because of it.

ETA: How funny would it be if he came knocking on your door one day with a copy of The Watchtower?

Fyrenza 09-19-2008 07:31 PM

guess thats what happened in 2005 that he didn't put out an album

wonder what happened in 1983?

he still did collaborations
