Awake - Dream Theater

Been listening to Awake by Dream Theater the last couple of days and i'm very impressed by this album. Maybe i'm wrong but to me it seems like this album doesnt get very much credit in comparison to other Dream Theater albums, i never really hear it mentioned as one of there better albums, but i think there sound is so kick ass throughout the entire thing. It really shows the metal edge to there playing and the production is excellent as well. Just wondering if im alone in thinking this album is very underrated.

Not one of my favorite DT albums, mostly because I have a hard time listening through it track by track.

Images & Words is one of my favorite albums of all time, but on the whole I think Dream Theater have been eclipsed by others in the progressive metal community over the last two decades. Not because John Petrucci, Rudess and co. aren't talented mind you...but the catchiness they had in spades at one point has been one-upped by bands like Redemption, Threshold and ever evolving individuals like Devin Townsend.

Images & Words is their most AOR sounding album, so I'd guess you'd like it.

They may be masters, and extremely technical. I'm sure they can play any style of music, using the so called "formulas". But music is more than a formula. It is math, but it's also art. Some people can make beautiful music with only 3 chords, words and vocals. Just because some music isn't technical, doesn't mean it isnt good. There is a place for the highly technical styles and a place for the simplistic stuff.

And I agree with whoever said it, tool is way better. John petrucci himself even said it. But I am biased, DT doesn't appeal to me at all.

It's a product, not music in the first place. I like DT by the way, but I realise that it lacks a bit of feel. Tool is even more technical, but at least has some feel to it :)

tool is not more technical then dream theater... everything they play is in drop d for the guitarist... skills wise overall they dont matchup... danny carey is amazing though i will admit that.. but overall.. they are not as skilled as dream theater... doesnt make dream theater better.. just saying though

i mean john petrucci and adam jones are on completely different levels technically speaking.... adam jones is a phenomal writer and his style is incredibly original
