Where did you buy your records?

The vinyl generation has lost it's habitat a only a few hundred browsing record emporiums left.

I have set a up a web site to save the history of the record shop/dept. Please add your comments or send in your information of shops missing from the archive.

Where you brought your first record or what former musician worked or was seen in the shop. You can leave comments on the forum or on the British Record Shop Archive.

s_k 11-18-2011 02:26 PM

I still buy new records, regularly.
So what are you on about? :D

bob. 11-18-2011 02:42 PM

same here....although i primarily buy it online....i still take a few days each year to wander the bay area, get drunk, and buy records

s_k 11-18-2011 02:43 PM

Hahaha, I'd join you if the bay area wasn't thousands of miles away :D

bob. 11-18-2011 03:00 PM

anytime you can make it :)

ironically my favorite bar is down the street from Amoeba records and specializes in Belgium beers (if i remember my geography that would be pretty close to you :) )

s_k 11-18-2011 03:16 PM

If I shout really hard, Belgium can hear me.
I am not kidding either:
http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n...rig/nlbelg.jpg
The green dot is my house, the red dot is the Belgium border. There's a scale in the lower left corner :).
As you know I've moved recently. The house I lived before is about the same distance from the German border, as this house is from the Belgium border.
This piece of the Netherlands where I live is called the 'bottleneck'. It's really narrow:
http://www.pt-training.eu/images/limburg.gif
Look near the bottom. I used to live in Susteren. Now I live under Maasbracht :D.
Germany's on the right of the orange area, Belgium on the left.
There's something called the 'Drielandenpunt' close to where I live. which means 'point of three countries' here. It's actually a place where The Belgian, German and Dutch borders get together. You can actually travel through those three countries while walking in a tiny circle :D

http://www.informatiegids-nederland....2009031500.jpg
There you go. All three poles are in a different country :D

Anyway, ontopic:
THIS is where I've bought most of my new records for the last 14 years :).
The second hand ones are mainly from flea markets/bootsales and thrift stores/charity shops or whatever you call them :).

a seriously amazing record store....i remember years ago i went to S.F. to see Fantomas.....me and my friend had time to kill before the show so we hiked up the hill to Ameoba....walked and and fantomas was doing a free in store.....saw them twice in one day!

edit: Rasputin Records in berkley is pretty damn good also....you can almost always find crazy self released stuff there that is well worth looking into

TheFolkslave 11-18-2011 04:51 PM

I live in Turku, Finland and there is a handfull of record stores there. I usually visit only two of them and this one is my favorite: Eerikinkatu 8, 20100 Turku, Finland - Google Maps

Engine 11-18-2011 05:01 PM

I haven't bought vinyl in years but I used to spend much money on it at Plan 9 in Richmond, VA.

Zer0 11-18-2011 05:13 PM

I usually get new records at Tower Records in Dublin. They have a nice selection in there and stock new releases. Although there certainly isn't as many places here selling records as there once was you still have a handful of places to choose from.

I get second-hand records at a travelling record fair that comes to my town every few months. I've found some awesome stuff at it so far this year and the next one is on in a couple of weeks time :)

bob. 11-18-2011 05:30 PM

wow...you guys still have tower records.....they all closed down state side

Paedantic Basterd 11-18-2011 05:32 PM

It seems to me that record stores are thriving in the UK. I visited heaps of them while I was there, and it's an experience I wish I could have at home.

s_k 11-18-2011 05:33 PM

It's getting harder for me to find affordable second hand vinyl records of my liking, as I've already got so much :D

It was part of the original chain but it's privately-owned now as far as I know. The actual Tower Records chain no longer exists but they were allowed to keep the name as part of a franchise. There's still a few other stores trading under the Tower Records name around the world as far as I know.

Urban Hat€monger ? 11-18-2011 06:25 PM

I think Virgin bought out the UK branch of Tower Records a few years ago.

Most of my shopping was done at the Rough Trade shop in Camden, I would save up and go there every 6 months, maybe catch a couple of gigs while I was in London.

It was fun.

Yes I still buy records still and go to record shops but the post is about the history of buying and the places we went to. I have reported you to the admin as your map and comments are not welcome.

This is my go-to, Sister Ray in London Soho, really good record store. I spent £260 on vinyl in there last month.

Crippled me.

You may want to reread my comment as I actually answered your question perfectly, below the map.

While s_k's penchant for posting extremely detailed personal information about himself on a public forum might be considered many things.
The words Idiotic, attention seeking and creepy would be some of them, but it's not breaking any actual forum rules.

Very entertaining. I actually followed your path from Susteren north to Maasbracht. Boy do I need a life. http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...de_999/doh.gif

First time I've ever seen someone title a single post, though. :D

Goofle 11-19-2011 08:02 AM

I do get quite a few online, but there is a good record shop in Manchester City Center.

Janszoon 11-19-2011 08:57 AM

I'm a big fan of the Philadelphia Record Exchange. It's basically a house jam packed with records on both floors and the basement. It's the ideal place if you're the kind of person who enjoys spending hours digging through old vinyl, and I assume most people posting in this thread are that kind of person. The staff there is great too. I always remember the time I was in there pretty late in the evenng, thinking they were probably about to close so I walked up to the guys at the counter and asked if they needed close up soon. One of them held up his mostly-full bottle of beer and said, "nope".

I think I may be part of the "vinyl generation" but I never knew much about our "habitat," as I only purchased two or three records in my life, one being Olivia Newton John's "Totally Hot." I have no idea where.

I never ever buy music now (my high rolling music purchasing days are over), but I'm curious where I'd go in my community if I wished to find a record.

The only place I know about is the public library, because recently there was a book sale where records were also sold. I struck up a conversation with a woman who had purchased lots of records (old, of course). Turned out her husband sells them online.

I think another word for s_k would be this one:

friendly! :D

Yes, yes, I know...it may be hard to remember the adjective that matches this rare online behavior. ;)

s_k has a great vinyl browsing location. I've seen it! And his whole house. Great place. :) If I were in his country, that's where I'd go to find records because his house should count as a browsing record emporium...and as a bonus, it has a cat!

Funny how 'different' instantly turns to 'creepy' and 'idiotic' here.
I'm definitely no attention seeker ;)
AND I answered his question!

Haha, stop being friendly or people might think you're creepy and/or an idiot. :).
Thank you Erica. That's really nice of you. Thanks, also from my cat :D.
If you're ever in the Netherlands (or Belgium, close anyway), you're more than welcome.

Phantom Limb 11-19-2011 01:35 PM

This is mine. The Electric Fetus in Minneapolis. It's a really nice shop.

No love for mine? It's rough and run down, but that's Philly for you. It has a great selection.

s_k 11-19-2011 02:33 PM

Haha, yours is even better. Sorry, missed that out.
Love the roughness of it.

These are the guys that work there:

Jan & Bart

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f1...e/DSC00688.jpg
Rino

Rino is the one who introduces me to new music most of the time. Even though Jan's Taste is more like mine. Bart has an entirely different taste in music but he's a great guy in general. Gives me loads of coffee.
I usually get there on tuesdays and it happens to me quite often that I arrive at 1pm and leave at 7pm. The store closes at 5:30, but who gives a **** anyway :D

Bloody†Mary 11-19-2011 06:13 PM

Usually from CD Universe.

^ Well said,Vegangelica !

I also have good memories of my local record library; I was very impressed to find half a dozen albums of Tibetan music in it, as well as spoken-word recordings and lots of other strange stuff.

The pics I like best on this thread are the shop interiors from Janszoon and s_k. I`m such a sad case, I`m reading the category labels and wishing I was there ...
I used to buy records from a similar shabby dive called Notting Hill Record Exchange in SW London. It had a great combination of low prices and (by my standards) obscure albums. Got most of my John Fahey from there.
