Bands Your Peers Were Into That You Got Into Much, Much Later
 

When I was in 6th/7th grade, White Zombie/Rob Zombie were really big amongst my classmates. I never listened to them, had no real interest, and really kinda blew them off as crap without any basis (partially due to *some* of the types of people that were listening to them as well). I guess I was a music snob on various levels even back then.

Then about 3 or 4 years ago, I finally decided to really check them out based on other factors (Rob Zombie's movies, hearing their songs elsewhere, best friend was HUGE into Rob Zombie, etc.). Turns out I really really liked them and now own about 3 Rob solo albums and have seen him twice in concert.

Any similar stories?

Deftones, though at the time I didn't like much of what they were doing. Since White Pony however I think they've done amazing amazing work.

When they came out everyone I knew had that Around the Fur hoodie. (Edit: or was it adrenaline, whatever)

I guess Nirvana for me. I've only really bothered listening to them this year, but they do deserve their reputation. All my peers used to worship them though, so perhaps they don't deserve that much praise but I can kind of see where my friends were coming from.

Guns n Roses. I always liked them, but considering I was in junior high when they got big, you'd think I would have been more into them. I didn't actually buy any of their albums until college for some reason though.

Pixies - some hipster chick in my college loved them, i only liked them about 15 years later

Roxette - i hated them when they were popular, got into them only after sitting in front of MTV Europe for hours a day during my University days

Most of my classmates were into Slipknot, My Chemical Romance and various post-hardcore bands. I gave them a shot but they still ain't my scene. So nope, I don't have much in common with my old classmates musically.

My chemical romance is really the only one I can think of, I really hated them when they were popular but now I think their album The Black Parade is actually a pretty good album.

My friend introduced me to the pixies. which is now my favorite band..
but it's funny, i was listening to them for the first time ever AS he was burning a tape, and i said to him..

"are you sure this is good?"

he just said "trust me, it is"

i also remember a guy who one time played me "Strawberry Fields"
he said it was the greatest song ever, he kept going On-an-On about it, How the Beatles are the best band and Whtvr, but me? i didn't get it.. not until like, 6 yrs laters or something.. :laughing:

I think Pink Floyd is one of the other bands people like to listen to because their dads liked them, but not at first because when we're younger we often like to listen to different bands from our parents out of a desire to be different.

Then when you're older, you will inevitably encounter these old bands somewhere else and are more likely to listen to them for the sake of music.

Never grown up in a musical household, and none of my friends seem to want to look for music that is more underground than The Pixies. So I have ended up being friends with people who like decent music, just not much of it.
