The 80s was full of artists doing more or less what Madonna did, people like Kim Wilde, Nena, Samantha Fox, Sandra, Sabrina etc. Although I'm not a fan of that kind of music, I reckon Madonna was by far the best of the bunch. Her songs were good and she wasn't a one-hit wonder either. There was more where that came from.

Since then she's managed to renew herself, for example on songs like Frozen or Hung Up. I don't think she's that overrated and figure she's a better candidate for the title Queen of Pop than any other I can think of.
Sabrina was basically just doing porn disguised as music

I never heard of Sabrina before. Kim Wilde is slightly underrated.

Madonna used to be compared to Cyndi Lauper, arguably the only other American female pop artist who was very successful from '83 through the end of the decade.

If you care to validate all of my first paragraph you can do some googling and you'll find that some people thought she 'sounded black' while others claim that this was a myth that she, herself, unleashed. It's the media so who knows really? Regardless, she was known for her voice before anybody knew what she even looked like (I'm talking about pre-first solo album). Granted, it didn't take too long for her financiers to realize that consumers would be even more interested in her body and she was happy to oblige.

Racialism and sexism aside, I totally disagree that her voice was thin and underwhelming in her early years. You need to listen to her first few solo albums and point out how this is true if you want to change my mind. While she capitalized on some ingenious music producers, her voice was exceptional. That's what initially made her interesting even more than her looks and the synth tracks that she sang over.

Depends what country you are talking about. If you are just speaking from an American chart perspective then understand that America does not represent the whole world.

i agree with this

she was marketed in the same way as Teena Marie was in the early days

Teena Marie was signed to Motown so everybody thought she was black

Kim Wilde had several hits here. She's the sister of Ricky Wilde who released the (in)famous single I Am An Astronaut in 1972 when he was 11.

Ricky Wilde was a co-writer with Kim on quite a few songs.
