Why is Madonna so overrated?

i don't think she was over-rated when she first made it big

the songs justified the hype

only later was she "over-rated", that's only because of unwarranted critical acclaim for what is "pop fluff"

No, but unfortunately many fans are like that. I don't think Madonna fans are as prominent on boards as other fans though like those of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, Bon Ivor, The Clash, The Replacements, The National, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine....

Madonna is definately overrated. Everything is to do with her looks and body, rather than the actual voice or any real talent.

I've never found them to be that zealous. I always find Buckethead and Dream Theater fans to be far more obsessive.

Some of the early songs were good, like Lucky Star, Borderline. So when she started she did create an impression in an American pop scene which wasn't so strong at the time. And it seems there needs to be a big American pop star for people, that's why Lady Gaga is now built up as being amazing, and why Michael Jackson was rated so highly.

As a teenager I survived on her. Now I don't even listen to her.

Still compared to all of her imitators like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, etc. she still made better music.

I think I liked Material Girl more from that time, something about the vocal or production as well as the catchy melody.

I quite like Madonna for a pop female artist, and I think she's quite talented. Unlike many of her successors, she wasn't manufactured by an agent with a recording contract in place. In response to many of the posters, I agree with Salami in that I don't think her fans are overly zealous (a la Lady Ga Ga), and I agree with Il Duce, I really like "Into the Groove"... definitely my favorite Madonna song. Plus, Madonna is an actual musician and played guitar, drums, and sang in a band (The Breakfast Club) before her solo career took off. She's also a professionally trained dancer, so I don't think her talent can be questioned.

Off topic... I read in the current issue of Classic Rock Magazine that Brian May is considering Lady Ga Ga as front woman for a possible upcoming Queen tour. No one can replace Freddie, but I would actually love to see that.
