Your Favourite Movie involving Being in a Band?

Well, here's my list of movies I enjoyed that involve either a fictional being-in-the-band storyline or documentaries. Some of the movies I list may be ridiculous, but I seriously don't really care

Wayne's World 1 & 2
Josie & the Pussycats
Alvin & the Chipmunks
School of Rock
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster
Hustle and Flow

Alright, that's all I can think of for now. Would love to hear from the rest of you!

Almost Famous is really good but I like 24 Hour Party People better.

And I loved Eddie and the Cruisers when I was a kid, not sure if it still holds up well or not though.

Frownland 01-26-2012 07:45 AM

This is Spinal Tap is hard to beat.

Oh man, I love Streets of Fire even more than Eddie & The Cruisers! I wouldn't have thought of it as a "being in a band" movie but now that you mention it I guess it kind of is.

it was labelled as a "rock n roll fantasy"

Stardust.
The 1974 movie with David Essex as opposed to many other movies with the same title.

Still Crazy is a great film. Anything with Bill Nighy as the lead singer of a band in is class.

Obviously. Lemonade Mouth is the standard by which all band movies and perhaps films in general should be judged.

Look at this scene where the rag-tag group of strangers meet in detention; where the magic starts:

My heart soars as Olivia dances around the room and they all improvise such a inspired song. They are meant to play together! It's so obvious!

But will their parents approve? Charlie's brother is a hot shot soccer player who gets good grades at a fancy school, and his parents want Charlie to do the same but all Charlie wants to do is play the drums. He doesn't want to let his parents down but he has to follow his passion! This is but one of the hardships the band members must endure.

Need more evidence of the films greatness? Look at this scene where the bandmates try and help an anxious Olivia before their big performance at the school's Halloween Bash:

My favorite character is Stella. She's a rebel that doesn't let the authority of the school's principal keep her from doing what she thinks is right. Her shirt that says "Question Authority" on it says all you need to know about her.

Beautiful, inspiring stuff. :banghead:

Les Claypool's Electric Apricot. A film festival type film, but a great watch. It's in the same vein as Spinal Tap, except with a psychedelic jam band. And I'd take Electric Apricot over Spinal Tap in a heartbeat.

Les Claypool plays the sporadic drummer / glass-blower (bong maker) :P

A Hard Day's Night. And I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978) is hilarious, although it's about fans (I've also read it was John Lennon's favorite Beatles film).

Above 01-27-2012 06:03 PM

Not seen many, but I rate Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World because I loved the editing and camerawork in that movie. Always appreciated good camerawork...

TheNiceGuy 01-28-2012 12:54 AM

The Kids Are Alright. :band:

The guitar player in the fictional band also goes by the name Billy Tallent, pretty obvious where another particular Ontario band picked up their name from. The movie also features Hugh Dillon in the lead role where his experience in fronting The Headstones for the last decade prior to the film's creation was an obvious asset.

Anyone who wants to play punk rock or adhere to a serious DIY ethic of making music for a living first and securing a regular paycheck second should really take the time to check this film out.

Above 01-28-2012 06:34 AM

I watched This Is Spinal Tap for the first time last night (I know, I know). The satire was pretty great, and some moments made me cringe with how obnoxious they were being. Great film.

Frownland 01-28-2012 10:45 AM

^ That's definitely one of my top comedies and music films.
Note: on IMDb, the rating scale goes from 1 to 11.

DoctorSoft 01-28-2012 11:01 AM

Ahahahaha I totally thought I was the only one who knew about Lemonade Mouth. I guess that was Disney's attempt to reach out to their "alternative" audience? Either way, it worked out swimmingly.

See if you like Electric Apricot then, unless you despise the idea of jam bands even to make fun of them a bit.

Howard the Duck 01-29-2012 02:11 AM

i really do want to check out this "Lemonade Mouth" by now

Damn straight you do!

In all honesty, it's not very good in the traditional sense but it's the most fun I've had watching a movie with friends in a long time. It's put together alright but it's just really cheesy, predictable and sort of ridiculous. You wouldn't expect anything less, though, and maybe if you kicked back a 6-pack it would turn into a really superb movie.

This video of the competing band "Mudslide Crush" performing a song should help convince everyone to watch this film.

monique06 01-30-2012 05:00 AM

I've been watching, although it's not really a movie, but ONE TREE HILL is a great TV series wherein there's music in it and they won't end a season without featuring a or including bands or single artists in their show.

It's a great one!

ohsen12 01-31-2012 10:47 AM

The only one I can think of right now would have to be School Of Hard Rock, which was fairly decent. I watched bits and pieces of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but it did not appeal to me.

GeddyVanHalen 01-31-2012 12:21 PM

School of Rock was awesome because it inspired me to want to teach students how to play music.

Scott Pilgrim is just awesome cuz of the garage rock sound. Plus it kinda reminds me of my lifestyle...partying it up with friends, jam the hell out of our instruments, and meet random people. lol!

GeddyVanHalen 01-31-2012 12:23 PM

That reminds me, has anyone ever seen Get Him to the Greek?

Mark Will 02-01-2012 05:22 AM

Wayne's World 1 & 2 and SpinialTap. Those are hard to beat. Never got that SpinalTap years ago. Now, after toured with bands several years it's just so hilarious.

steve0211 02-01-2012 05:30 AM

My top choice is the only one that goes to 11, naturally.

The Rockumentary, if you will, known as This is Spinal Tap!

Blarobbarg 02-01-2012 08:31 AM

I've seen so many at really odd hours that I don't even remember names anymore.

Spinal Tap (of course)
Some movie documenting African Americans in punk music (not stellar, but good)
That thrash metal documentary (enjoyed this quite a bit)
Electric Apricot (see everyone else's comments about it)
ANOTHER metal documentary

That's all I can think of at the moment. I'm sure there's more.

Your Favourite Movie involving Being in a Band?

My favorite Josie & the Pussycats, School of Rock, Hustle and Flow. I like my films, involves a fictional band has been the story or documentary. My list of movies, some of whom may be absurd, but I seriously do not care,

jackhammer 02-01-2012 04:39 PM

Not THE favourite but certainly one of them:
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...-fqTd9mPo-1V9W
A film about a reunion of a once successful Rock band in the 70's. VERY English in it's humour.
http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...QMp3JwAR_EU47Q
Absolutely surreal Belgian jet black comedy about a Punk band but it turns into something else entirely. Not for the faint hearted but utterly original and mad as a box of frogs.

Blarobbarg 02-01-2012 09:30 PM

Totally forgot Almost Famous. Loved that movie. Such a depressingly realistic take on the rock n roll lifestyle.

Alfred 02-01-2012 09:35 PM

It's only my all-time favourite movie.

YES! Here is the rebooted theme by Juliana Hatfield and Tanya Donnelly!

(I literally worship both of them! )
