Did Humans Invent Music? (interview)

Did Humans Invent Music? - Gary Marcus & Geoffrey Miller - Entertainment - The Atlantic

I believe there was a long thread about a similar topic. Maybe this belongs there, but I don't know how to find it.

It`s an interesting article, wisdom, and one of the comments at the end had a link that led me to this intriguing clip :-

Thanks !

What surprises me are the elements of control, co-ordination and rhythm that the elephants are displaying. They aren`t walking away, or knocking their instruments over. And the big guy in the centre hitting the drums, for instance, is delivering a consistent beat. The only apparent reward for his efforts is pleasure, or at least curiosity, about the sound that he`s making. So, does that mean that he`s a musician ?

I guess that was the question in the back of my mind when I said, "intriguing".

They have also probably been trained and done it many times before. Not to mention the musicians are helping them by playing lots of other instruments. An animal has a heart beat just like us so I dont see why its wierd they would hit something at that tempo.

You do know the average tempo for the majority of popular music is typically similar to ones heart beat, its not a mystery. Us and all other living things like the pace and rhythm of our hearts.

"Did Humans Invent Music?"

Keyword: Invent. That is, we're talking about creating something new. Which is different than an inborn ability, like this one:

Anyway, animals and humans have, at least, one thing in common: males making music in order to attract females' attention.

Interesting, I have to reread it before commenting.
