Origins and characteristics

The origins of psychedelic music were in folk and rock music of the mid-1960s, particularly the work of The Beatles, The Byrds and bands like The Yardbirds and The Grateful Dead.[1] As psychedelia emerged as a mainstream and commercial force it began to influence pop music, which incorporated hippie fashions, drug references, as well as the sounds of sitars, fuzz guitars, and tape effects, but often using the close harmonies of the California sound and applying these elements to concise and catchy pop songs.[2]

Some Classic Examples

Paedantic Basterd 05-12-2012 11:25 AM

Some modern examples of psych pop that expound on the genre in various ways.

Paedantic Basterd 05-12-2012 11:28 AM

A handful of modern favourites.

And now that I've broken all of your computers as well as my own; a smattering of my favourite psychedelic pop band.

I've been waiting to get this out of my system for a long time.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:18 PM

Got to have your Prunes of the Electric kind!

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:24 PM

While I'm on that kick for songs from 1967-released albums, which my Electric Prunes pick was actually from (Underground, a MIGHTY FINE album), here's one from the good Blues Magoos album Electric Comic Book. With a touch of G-Punk Power, there's a touch of killer pop hooks and snarls all wrapped up in one Psych pop classic.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:27 PM

The 'Nez wrote this classic nugget that wound up on the excellent Pieces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones, Ltd. album. The Moog bits top it off nicely.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:35 PM

Possibly among the sparks of the Neo-Psychedlia, here's the finale to Deface the Music.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:39 PM

Utopia's song brings this to mind. From the classic tribute to the era masterminded by XTC.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:47 PM

I may be choosing more Rock based stuff, but I hope I'm on the right track.
That said, Syd Barrett was solid with the Pop Hooks that GRABBED you. Technicolor Sound, Black and White Footage...pretty rare stuff (until it got You Tubed)

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:52 PM

You want Pop? Here's Psych-Pop from the Pop Side of the spectrum. The Gibbs had a sharp instinct of knowing what trends to catch for their style. My favorite era was certainly the Bee Gees 1'st-Odessa era.

Screen13 05-12-2012 12:58 PM

One last one (for now...). Pure class!

Frownland 05-12-2012 01:13 PM

Now that my computer has finally recovered from being brokeded, I'll post some more youtube videos to break yours.

Some strawberries

Some colour

So are some psychedelic songs that aren't pop?

Zaqarbal 05-12-2012 04:42 PM

The Beach Boys: Good Vibrations (1966).

bob. 05-12-2012 05:25 PM

wow you guys have really covered this well

but i have to add all of these just for the simple fact that i was introduced to the psychedelic experience by them :)

they are not exactly known for "pop" music but this song hits the nail on the head

lets see groovy psychedelic beats, a song title which is an obvious reference to LSD, a video of one of the members on said drug

but Psychic TV really takes the cake for great psychedelic pop

Zaqarbal 05-12-2012 06:20 PM

Post-70's psychedelic pop.

Tears for Fears: Sowing the Seeds of Love (1989).

So I'm curious, what's the difference between modern psychedelic pop and neo-psychedelia?

Anyway, this.

jackhammer 05-12-2012 06:44 PM

A lil bit of Mod Psych:

My favourite Yeasayer track:

From a famous commercial but never really followed up on the band after this track:

The superlative Electric Banana:

Lisnaholic 05-12-2012 07:38 PM

With a total of 31 clips, I get the feeling you like psych pop, Pedestrian :)

This group wasn`t much more than a one-hit wonder, their reputation now overwhelmed by another group with the same name.
If you`re ever disappointed by the level of discussion on MB, take a look at this guy from the Youtube page, explaining why Kurt Cobain`s voice sounds so different on Rainbow Chaser:-

Quote:

You don't know **** about music. I'm practically a musicololoist, and I can tell you that that is obviously Colbain on auto-tune. Lately he's not using auto-tune as much, so that's why you think it's a different person. But this is from his auto-tune days. Either way it SUCK ASS!!!! JB wins again!!!!

Anyway, this.

There's a lot of overlap, and many of the bands I've mentioned could fall into both categories, but in my observation, neo-psychedelia borrows more from psych rock than pop, and tends to lean more towards experimentalism.

Paedantic Basterd 05-12-2012 10:51 PM

Fun fact: My computer blue screen'd today while I was playing back the videos on the first page.

So uh, be warned.

Screen13 05-12-2012 11:14 PM

Jan wrote it, Dean sang it. Interesting move. Could have fit a number of Exploitation films perfectly (and that's a compliment coming from me. I love those films.)

Screen13 05-12-2012 11:23 PM

What's a Psych Pop thread without one of the legends of The 60's Sunset Strip?

Screen13 05-12-2012 11:33 PM

As there's room for some Neo-Psych Pop here...
One from Cope's 1983 "Sunshine Playroom" EP. The World Shut Your Mouth-Fried era is classic.

Screen13 05-12-2012 11:37 PM

A classic from Fried! I think I still have that 2 7" edition of that single. (did a LOT of moving around recently...)

Howard the Duck 05-13-2012 08:44 AM

i think this song and the entire album is severely underrated:-

from "Their Satanic Majesties Request"

as is this one:-
