Can appearances can be deceptive?

To look at me (short hair, clean shaven, casual dresser, wear tie to work) I wouldn't imagine that a lot of people would guess I listen to (amongst others) Pantera, Slayer and Obituary. In a strange kind of way I like this, the fact that I'm not predictable and I have raised more than a few eyebrows when the subject of music comes up in conversation.

This is something that I've been thinking about recently and would be interested to hear other views; Do you dress in accordance to your musical preferences? Do you find it necessary to do so?

And yeah, I know I screwed the thread title up!! :banghead:

PoorOldPo 05-14-2012 04:58 AM

Nah, i don't think appearances matter at all. I think you have to look into people's eyes, into who they are. That is usually how I can tell.

FETCHER. 05-14-2012 05:03 AM

I've been surprised by so many people after assuming they were into certain things. I know a guy who dresses "gothy" and I assumed he was into metal and ****. When he wasn't, he was pretty much into the same kind of music as me which was a big shock.

Vertigo 05-14-2012 05:32 AM

Usually, the reaction I get is "Oh...I wasn't expecting that!" or something similar, which kind of begs the question as to what they were expecting.

Probably better that I don't know!

Honestly, I don't even know what dressing in accordance with my musical preferences would look like so I guess my answer would be no.

mr dave 05-14-2012 06:41 AM

^ Oh man, to be young enough for this to still matter again :shycouch:

What I've noticed over the years is that workplace attitude, especially towards intangible elements of the workplace like authority figures and the corporate structure are the new telltale signs for stylistic preference.

If I'm in a meeting with a manager who keeps trying to make witty one-liners it's pretty well guaranteed they're into hip-hop (particularly mainstream fare like Eminem or Kanye). A manager who'll just bit their tongue, then complain about the corporate machine while doling out tasks on a new project - likely a metal head outside the office. Someone who's always perky and farting sunshine and waving their hands highest and hardest at the opportunity to volunteer for a corporate event - top40 pop tart.

FETCHER. 05-14-2012 07:27 AM

It's just stereotypes at the end of the day and I know I stereotype people. It's got nothing to do with what you wear mattering to people.

Blarobbarg 05-14-2012 08:55 AM

Not so much the way I dress, but because I'm an intellectual, kind, nice person people make assumptions. Most immediately think all I listen to is classical, or country and western for some reason. When I tell them what I do listen to most are seriously confused.

Then again, they could just be confused because they literally don't understand that there are musicians other than those on the radio.

Frownland 05-14-2012 09:02 AM

I feel like I would get drug tested a lot more if I dressed like my musical taste.

Conor 05-14-2012 09:16 AM

I don't dress like the music I listen to, then again as well people are surprised when I tell them who I like.

Don't think it's cool to listen to "un cool" music, it's not original and in fashion

 and I bet you wouldn't be the only one!

There are people in my locality who do the exact opposite from me - they make so much effort that it becomes overkill and ends up looking ridiculous.

Paedantic Basterd 05-14-2012 12:06 PM

I don't think I dress with any particular connotation, but I do own a band t-shirt or two.

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-14-2012 12:30 PM

I quite like Nancy Sinatra so obviously I wear miniskirts & thigh high boots.

Paedantic Basterd 05-14-2012 12:32 PM

Who wants to post their picture and get judged by everyone else?

If I had to guess, I would assume the person would be in a very sharp-looking modern suit, who had run a mile near a chain-linked fence whereby he had been shot at through this fence by children with paintball guns.

And after that s/he would have a tickle fight with what I'm imagining to be a Bengal tiger...is how I imagine they would look.

Oh and maybe square-framed glasses and what appear to be an attempt at mutton chops.

Freebase Dali 05-15-2012 05:05 PM

Music and clothing don't really hold any sort of parallel to me. Maybe it's a side-effect of being an adult.. I don't know. When I was a teen I was what people would term a "skater kid", which was mostly about the skater sub-culture aspect at the time, and we all listened to mostly Punk, but we definitely didn't go around sporting mohawks and wearing leather. It was more practical to be a skateboarder with baggy jeans, skate shoes and old tee shirts with the sleeves cut off.

Now, I'm just a normal adult who wears ordinary, comfortable clothing. Whether some of the tastes I held when I was a teen carried over, it's nothing to do with music taste I had, nor the tastes I have now. I don't see a need for there to be a parallel at all.

jackhammer 05-15-2012 05:48 PM

I still dress like a metalhead generally but I always have loved T shirts anyhow and wear them all year round and with the crappy weather we have over here ATM I am always in my leather jacket. I always wear skater type trainers because the designs are better than ordinary trainers and I find them far more comfortable with the wider fitting so people are surprised when I talk about other types of music or actually have an opinion on other subjects outside of music. It does mean that people probably see me in a certain way but I just find jeans, t-shirts and trainers more comfortable so it may not be who I really am but I have zero fashion sense anyhow so balls to it.

It's kind nice to confound people's expectations once they get talking to me.

Scarlett O'Hara 05-15-2012 05:51 PM

For me basically everyone gets shocked when I tell them what I listen to. As a teen I dressed quite skankily but was always considered a 'brain'. I would tell someone that I was listening to heavy metal and alternative and their mouths dropped. These days I wear tight fitting but classy clothes for work and street/chic everywhere else. With that and my blonde hair everyone assumes I'm a ditz and would be a top40 girl. If they do bother to ask I explain my large variety of music tastes and surprise surprise they are amazed.

See, now where are those photos in the MPG?

Rice 05-16-2012 08:03 AM

People judge what a person is like or what they are into, a lot by the clothes they wear. For me though, the way I am kind of reflects the music I am into.

It's hard to get the "tickle fight a Bengal tiger" look just right. Once I finally do I'll post some pix for you.

cledussnow 05-16-2012 08:18 AM

I agree. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a great can:

I'm sure that this is just coincidental. I find it a little embarrassing to be honest when you see people making this effort to act in a certain way just because of their musicical preferences.

I find something strangely erotic about that picture.
