Who Was The Biggest Loss To Music? (Death) :/

Out of all the young singers who passed away early... buddy holly,ritchie vallens,john lennon,marvin gaye,elvis presley,jimi hendrix,otis redding,kurt cobain,amy winehouse,aaliyah,jim morrison,michael jackson,freddie mercury,selena,2pac,Bradley Nowell,ricky nelson,eddie cochran,janis joplin,hank williams,ronnie van zant,bon scott,bob marley,marc bolan,jim croce,duane allman,mama cass,sam cooke,frankie lymon,ian curtis...

Who do you feel could've contributed so much more but was cut short(pre-maturely)?
I'd have to go with jimi hendrix I wondered what new direction he would've went with the music..such a shame to lose such a musical genius so early...
When I listen to cry of love/rainbow bridge it gives me a glimpse of what was about to happen next..

GG Allan.

From a hip-hop fans perspective;

Biggie, Pun and Big L were all big losses.

Also, on another note Jay Reatard could have done so much more. As could have Jeff Buckley.

Not really. I said that because I don't think anybody actually gives a **** GG is dead.

From a hip hop perspective; Dilla, and it's not even close. Shaped and defined an entire era of hip hop and R&B pretty much single-handedly and in his role with the Ummah.

Well, the answer is in the title of the thread, Death's frontman, Chuck Schuldiner...
He certainly was a great contributor to the development of Death Metal and its evolution towards more technical and progressive territories. Maybe he would have experienced with jazz/fusion if he still lived.

Another guy who died too early, Krzysztof Komeda, a jazzman who was hired by Polanski to perform the music for his movies, among which Rosemary's Baby's score.

Eyrothath 06-24-2012 05:34 PM

Everyone knew Michael Jackson would die soon however, his death was unexpected.. If we're talking FAMOUS ones, then Elvish Presley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury and Jim Morrison are probably the top 5.. The older guys I cannot really put on a list, if they die at old age, it's expected, but the young, talented ones who go waaay too soon is just a shame, drugs will do that to you though..

Eddie Cochran it's hard to believe he died at 21 an age when most artist are just starting out and what little he had chance to record was still influential to a whole wide range of artists and musicians decades after his passing.

Quote:

Artists such as The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, Tom Petty, Rod Stewart, Motörhead, Humble Pie, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, Lemmy Kilmister, The Head Cat, The Damned, UFO (band), T. Rex, Stray Cats, Brian Setzer, Cliff Richard, The Who, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, The Sex Pistols, Rush, Buck Owens, Tiger Army, Dion, Simple Minds, Guitar Wolf, Paul McCartney, Alan Jackson, Keith Richards & The X-Pensive Winos, and Jimi Hendrix have covered his songs.

Spoiler for 2 Eddie Cochran covers cover by Led Zeppelin:

I can't really say, it's always a big loss in some way, I guess Kurt Cobain was a big loss, but so are a lot of the guys on the list of music star deaths.

Lennon made a Beatles reuinion impossible. Hendrix and Morrison died so young and were still creating very high quality music at the time of their deaths. It's difficult to say.

MichaelForbes 06-25-2012 04:45 AM

John Lennon.

Not to diminish the impact of the loss of other greats such as Elvis, Hendrix, etc., but Lennon was on his way to a comeback. "Double Fantasy" would have been just the beginning. Imagine the kind of stuff he would have continued to put out, considering his life experience, the changes in his perspective, etc.

Michael

I don't personally think Death was too big a loss to music. He played bass with Bill and Ted, sure, but he was only really average. Wouldn't have got there on his own merits. A real case of not what you know but who you know.
:)

PS Forward to Death, who's the babe in your avatar? I must know! :D

Anyone who had made a success in their musical career is a loss when their life is cut short. Just to add three to the mix:

Cliff Burton
Dimebag Darrell
Randy Rhodes

It's Kaitlin Olsen as Sweet Dee Reynolds from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. Good show.

Well since I'm a girl, I can't really drop the moneyshot on my computer screen, haha.

Holerbot6000 06-25-2012 01:07 PM

Does it have to be just singers? For me, the biggest loss of the last few years was Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson. At the time he died, he was really cutting lose with some great stuff and there was every indication that he had a lot more in the hopper. Plus the world was just a better place knowing Sleazy was there, somewhere, doing something deviant.

If it's just singers, I'd probably go with Buddy Holly - he was really cut down in his prime and there is just no telling where he might have gone next. I think, like the Beatles and Brian Wilson, his songs probably would have grown more complex in their pop artistry. It would've been interesting to see where Richie Valens would have gone also, come to think of it.

Jimi Hendrix

'nuff said

Zer0 06-26-2012 02:05 PM

I'll probably go with Ian Curtis. He had already given a lot to the world in his all too brief career with Joy Division but I know he could have given so much more if he had decided to stick around. We might not have had New Order but Joy Division could have been even better and even more innovative than New Order throughout the 80's. Music today could have been a lot different.

Not really. It kind of annoys me when people do this, at least make an effort and give some sort of explanation for your choice.

cledussnow 06-26-2012 02:22 PM

I gotta go with Cobain.

I mean hot only do you have to account for all the stuff he never got to do, but had he never died, COurtney Hole wouldn't have gotten so much pub, and I wouldn't have ever had to hear that trash. That puts Kurt over the top right there.

That's a good way to look at it. I don't mind Hole but I'd just love to slap Courtney. If Cobain had stayed alive maybe Courtney would have faded from the spotlight along with the 90's instead of milking every cent out of her own career as well as Kurt's legacy. If only...

For the record, I think its Courtney Love.

Janszoon 06-26-2012 02:34 PM

Am I the only person in the world that's neutral about Courtney Love?

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-26-2012 02:56 PM

Don't really care about her but what a lovely world we'd live in if Cobain was still alive and no Foo Fighters albums existed.

Dave Grohl would more than likely have wanted to do his own thing anyway and still have done Foo Fighters as a side project. But yeah it would be a wonderful world.

well, the amount of guitar pedal effects that try to replicate Jimi's sound really says a lot, doesn't it?

No. 'Nuff said.

Rjinn 06-26-2012 11:13 PM

Yea Hendrix, John Bonham, Jim Morrison, Joe Strummer and Dimebag Darell of course.

May not be the biggest but Layne Staley and Shannon Hoon come to mind.

Duraddict 06-27-2012 08:49 AM

Freddie Mercury.

Howard the Duck 06-27-2012 09:21 AM

Captain Beefheart

cos he was really trailblazing with his last three albums

then again, he already announced his retirement but a friend of mine wanted to look him up to talk him out of it (before he died)
