Dudes that like chick singer/songwriters
When I was younger I used to listen almost exclusively to male singers. At the time I was into heavier stuff.
Now that I'm older I've grown a definite appreciation for female singer-songwriters. Some of my favorites are the obvious ones (ie. Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple) but I've also really gotten into Sarah Harmer lately. I wasn't a big fan of Kathleen Edwards' latest record (too much Bon Iver) but her earlier work is pretty happening. And if you haven't checked out the Jill Andrews 6-song EP you're missing out - great songs, great voice, terrific production values. If you're a dude that likes chick singers like these I'm super-curious to know what's on your playlists. (EDIT - reworded the first paragraph since it was confusing) |
Katherine Katz, who is neither soft nor wimpy. :)

Thanks for the replies guys!
Not really in the mood for anything heavy - when I was younger, I might have been into Thorr's Hammer, but now, I'm a lot more into "wimpy." More like or |

I hate the phrase "singer/songwriter", or at least the way it's generally used, no doubt Julie Christmas, Jex Thoth, Jarboe all write and sing(awesomely I might add) but somehow they don't count as singer/songwriters?(not trying to give the op **** in any possible way i should add, it's not their fault someone else decided decades ago to co-opt the phrase to mean more than what it should, just a pet peeve of mine)

I discovered Imelda May through Jeff Beck. She's quite the crooner.
Lilac Wine - Jeff Beck featuring Imelda May - video BiancaMariaCaminiti - YouTube |
I feel as if I may have already spammed these forums enough whittling on about how great I think she is and all, but Android Lust has to be up here.
Also, as it hasn't been posted yet I think this is also a worthy mention - |

I still own the first 3 Sheryl Crow cds, I also don't skip most of the tunes if they come up randomly. Still have some PJ Harvey, and I actually own pretty much the entire Luscious Jackson discography (only missing a few singles).
Also quite liked Poe back in the late 90s but she was a bit more alternative than most singer songwriter types. This is probably her most straightforward 'singer songwriter' type tune - really like the key change and shift in mood / tone around 2:30 |
Ever hear of someone named Stevie Nicks? She doesn't get enough credit, except from women in the industry.

I like so many chick singers/songwriters that listing them seems pointless.
Basing one's musical taste on the sex of a singer makes no sense to me and I think that only truly malfunctioning dudes make this ridiculous distinction. |
