One of THE great UK bands ... but how were they received across the globe ? Their "How Dare You" album still blows me away 30 years down the line. Anyone else ??

I always liked The Original Soundtrack album.

almauro 08-26-2012 01:58 PM

I love this band. "Rubber Bullets", "Wall Street Shuffle" and the great "Fresh Air for My Mama". They were wacky-brilliant.

I listened to that album and thought they ripped off about 16 bands throughout, so I wasn't impressed by what I heard (compared to how original or great I had been told they were). However the 1980 album was really good. I am going to explore their other stuff first.

By the time they did this album they were just a duo of Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart + studio musician. What you want to are albums when they also had Creme and Godley, starting with S/T and up to "How Dare You". This quartet loved Beach Boy harmonies, but were also highly influenced by Frank Zappa and did great parodies, or in their case, homages to music that influenced them.

In order of discovery values ... (in my opinion)

1) How Dare You
2) 10cc (debut)
3) Sheet Music
4) Original Soundtrack
5) Bloody Tourists
6) Deceptive Bends
7) Live Let Live
8) ... the rest (latter albums)

tho' if you can find the FULL King Biscuit recordings from the 73 US tour that's a worthwhile discovery

Caught this absolute banger at the end of a show I was watching. This is the first thing I've heard from 10cc. Anything else you'd recommend?

Neapolitan 02-25-2022 11:09 PM

^ huh? I find you incredulous. That's like you saying you studied American History at Harvard and never heard of Benjamin Franklin before until you saw a PBS special about him and thought he was "banging."

99% of the songs 10cc wrote were silly, tongue-in-cheek songs. But the one song that garnered them posterity in the US ironically was a serious anti-love song. It has one of the most incredible backing vocal tracks ever recorded.

albums:
10cc
The Original Soundtrack (especially for the song I'm Not in Love)
Deceptive Bends

songs:
Johnny Don't Do It
The Dean and I
Rubber Bullets
The Worst Band in the World
I Bought A Flat Guitar Tutor
I'm Not in Love
Things We Do for Love

Graham Gouldman pre 10cc days wrote songs for the Yardbirds, The Hollies, etc
For Your Love
Heartfelt of Soul
Bus Stop

I'm just a dabbler, but I like them and have been meaning to take the plunge for years.

My favourite at the moment is their song Don't hang up which is both funny and awesome. From what I can tell there's a layer of humour to most of what they do and I really like that.

Also seems like one of those bands where every member could do anything.

Queen Boo 02-26-2022 04:43 AM

They're such a polarizing band, some people hate them because they find them to be insufferable smartasses, others like myself love them for that same reason.

They were basically the Ween of the 70s.

Anti-intellectualism is so dumb, in music and elsewhere. I consider myself an anti-dumbualist.

rubber soul 02-26-2022 07:00 AM

I used to love 10cc in the day. I especially liked I'm Not in Love (favorite song of 1975) and Art For Art's Sake but anything up to How Dare You rates as a good listen to me.

I'm very partial to the album, Deceptive Bends. I am surprised you didn't put a word in for Feel the Benefit. The intro is very much like Dear Prudence, and there are parts of the songs that seem pastiche to John and Paul's solo music.

Is Musicbanter Harvard in this analogy?

I mostly just know about Sheet Music (goated cover) because of Dilla

Smartassedness is more about douchiness than intelligence though. It's arguably the dumbest way to implement your intellect tbh.

rubber soul 02-27-2022 09:54 AM

You guys wanna know how old I am? I bought Sheet Music on 8 track.

Very good album by the way.

rostasi 02-27-2022 10:05 AM

Didja ever buy "Sheet Music" on sheet music?

I guess the analogy would be not so much that MusicBanter is Harvard, but incredulity of a student of music not knowing 10cc is equal to incredulity of a Havard Student not knowing that Benjamin Franklin trekked on foot from Philadelphia to Boston to visit he brother.

Do you know and listen to every band? Surely there must be bands not even you have heard.

rostasi 02-27-2022 09:18 PM

It’s perfectly reasonable to think that there are some people -
especially these days - who wouldn’t know who 10cc were.

Queen Boo 02-28-2022 07:36 AM

I'm Not In Love was featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack so I imagine a lot of younger people will discover them through that movie.

Same thing happened to Yes because of Roundabout being used in the JoJo anime.

I'd agree with that. They were fairly popular in the seventies but they didn't have the staying power of, say, Elton John or Stevie Wonder or even ELO.

Queen Boo 02-28-2022 07:53 AM

As someone who used to watch Adult Swim religiously my introduction to 10cc was Rubber Bullets being used as the intro music for the Superjail! pilot.

No offense to 10cc, but Cheeseburger's - Coming Home was the right call.

I loved Superjail. Whoever did the animation must have been on some LSD trip.

Frownland 02-28-2022 08:44 AM

Nah they're on some weird psychedelic amphetamine **** that only John McAfee can handle.

I was hoping for some feedback on the songs and albums I listed. (I'm even waiting on rubber soul's opinion of Deceptive Bends & the song Feel the Benefit) I wanted to hear some kind of opinion about their magnum opus song, Not in Love. I don't know how this discourse turned into a referendum on my MIQ ((MIQ = Music IQ (fyi "IQ" = Intelligence Quotient)). I am still trying to figure that one out. ... not what IQ means but how the spotlight is turned on me and my music knowledge or the lack thereof it.

I've read some of the other posts and I gave this a lot of thought -- about how this amazing band was lost to time ... or location. I came to the realization that maybe it was all the fame and all the attention Aerosmith received that eclipsed any and all knowledge of 10cc in the Boston area. ... so in light of that fact I shall reproach myself for not treating MB members of the Boston area with kid gloves while discussing the subject of 10cc.

Hey, Nea! Good to see you back. Was getting a little worried you'd been away so long!

rubber soul 03-02-2022 07:52 AM

I did hear Feel the Benefit after seeing your post, Nea, though I have to admit I haven't heard the entire album as of yet. The hit from the album, The Things We Do For Love isn't one of their better songs, imo, so I probably discounted the album on the basis of that.

But, I liked Feel the Benefit quite a lot. It certainly has a Beatlesque feel to it and I see where you're going with the Dear Prudence style intro. Of course that type of guitar playing was pretty common in the seventies, no one realized on just how influential a guitarist George Harrison was.

Anyway will listen to the whole album now. I think I mentioned I'm Not in Love in one of my earlier posts but it rates as one of my favorite songs of the seventies . They did a lot of work on getting that chorus going on that one.

Like Trolls, glad to see you back, Nea. :)

I only recently discovered the other wonders of 10cc beyond their radio friendly hits, right along with Little Feat and The J. Geils Band.

Thanks for the welcome back. Deceptive Bends might take more than one listen to sink in. It's their... And Then There Were Three ... album. Godley & Creme left by then, but it still has its moments imo.

I grew up in a full house. It was always filled with music. The J. Geils Band "Live" Full House was one of my favorite albums. Forgive me for saying this but you are finally catching up to what I knew when I was 12 ... or 11 y/o. (If you can imagine I'm like the kid in Almost Famous but without Penny Lane and without the writing skills. And also it was my next door neighbor who left me a milk crate of albums, not my older sister leaving albums under the bed. That being said, I don't like to brag how much I know. I could know a lot, or I could know a little. I really don't know.)

My dad liked Country Rock/Southern Rock, and I heard quite a bit as a kid e.g. Dixie Dregs, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws, OMD, CDB, LS, etc etc. It was always "in heavy rotation" (it's a radio term to meaning quite frequently played). I thought I knew everything about that genre, but maybe I don't. I know very little of Little Feat, like maybe one song. So I consider you recently discovering that band no small feat indeed!

Plankton 03-03-2022 06:30 AM

Sure, I can forgive you for that but not for your improper use of parenthesis. That's going on your permanent record.

I'm just emerging from under a rock made of guitar widdly diddly doo's, so I have much to learn.

I emerged from rock made up of Bo Diddlys and Chuck Berrys. Becareful of the Duane Eddys the undertow will pull you in.

Plankton 03-03-2022 08:27 AM

Thx for the heads-up. Currently tracking down some Duane Eddy's...
