Liverpool/Mercyside also had:
The Big Three
Boo Radleys
Cast
The Farm ("All Together Now")
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Icicle Works/Ian McNabb
The Mojos
Ladytron
Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD - Still like the Early 80's stuff)
Teardrop Explodes
The Undertakers (w/Jackie Lomax)
and all of the many faces of Wah! (Pete Wylie)

Late 70's-80's music fans have a few good Birmingham bands that should also be listed:
Duran Duran (Say what you may, but they had some great moments in my opinion)
The Beat (or, if you're in The States, The English Beat)
Au Pairs (Playing With a Different Sex)
UB40 (Present Arms)

Throwing in one Extreme Metal band:
Anaal Nathrakh

One more 70' Rock/Pop band:
Wizzard (Wizzard being Roy Wood's post-Move/ELO band)

Still have not voted, will possibly get to one in a few days, but I just wanted to make the lists a little longer.

I'm waiting for someone to claim Sun Ra was from Birmingham.

I think you just did. I think Lynyrd Skynrd's roadie was from there also.

If I had to be perfectly honest

I would choose neither UK city and choose American ones and some Canadian ones

Louisiana
Atlanta
New York
Chicago
Vancouver BC Canada

for example

lots of great musicians

I never have and never will, since I tend to like more underground stuff. I guess I was trying to say that there are still music listener that don't like Top 40 Lady Gaga stuff. Take Heavy Metal for instance that genre isn't really mainstream no matter how popular some bands are, I'm sure there is still a market for Metal despite the popularity and oversatuation of Pop music and those this sort of artistes.

We now return you to your scheduled programme, already in progress... :)

I see that stuff on youtube and I have to say, you have to take what's on yt with a grain of salt, they can be much older & commenting they are 14 and today's music is crap as a joke... something like that I think is downright laughable.

Then that defeats the purpose of the exercise, which is to find the best bands from these two UK cities.

Not only does this comment have nothing to do with subject of the thread, as Unknown Soldier just pointed out, but Louisiana isn't even a city.

I get what he's saying. A lot of young 'uns these days are distancing themselves from your Nicky Minajs, One Directions and Lady Gagas (should that be Ladies Gaga?) and trying to be so mature and "above it all" by saying they like the Beatles, more or less because that's what they think people older than them think they should be listening to. We see it a lot: oh this group sucks, listen to the Beatles, from someone who's probably heard a few hits and (like me) never a full album. It just comes across as posing I think.

I genuinely love The Beatles. I don't give a damn about going against the grain just for the sake of somehow being cool. I was listening to bands like Th Guess Who and CCR when I was 10.

I think what you described is a popular stereotype these days.
