Artists You Respect as People: No Rules, No Expectations, No Complaints.

This is for all those that wish to talk about an artist who they admire as a human. They don't even have to be a musical artist. Just tell us who they are, why you like'em, and why - if perhaps some of us haven't heard of them - we might want to look them up, whether it be for their art, or their wonderful or respectable characteristics as a person.

(i'll start with this re-post from another thread. the creator of the thread was on me about them not being famous enough, so i started this thread, cuz there's lots of people making music - and art of all kinds - who deserve respect that just aren't famous enough for some threads... ahem. cough.)

i could spend hours citing some of the musicians i respect as people.

immortal technique is currently at the top of the list. he's not only greatly intelligent, but he's well-versed in the history of the world and able to juxtapose that with his knowledge of current events. he's all about spreading awareness through his music and his actions. he's self-made. he's probably well-off, but he's not rich, and he uses his label in part to sustain his family life and also to go to third world countries and build schools. and he doesn't take sh*t from anyone.

zappa is another person i greatly admire as a person. he broke boundaries with his music, his philosophies, and his way of life. he never ceased to provide a sound critique on social norms and customs. he was as dedicated to helping people think for themselves as he was to writing ground-breaking music. and he didn't take **** from anyone.

ravi shankar for bringing peace and merging "us with them" on a mainstream scale.

marilyn manson for his understanding of the paradox that is society and his embodiment of his critique through his work and his willingness to say things people don't necessarily want to hear.

ben howard cuz he's just a real gentle guy.

i also have a lot of respect for maynard james keenan. this is even controversial to me, because i have a feeling he's a total egomaniac. but, he's just so damn creative. from his visual art, to his various musical projects over the years, to his relatively recent foray into the world of wine-making, the guy just never stops creating. and in his music, egocentric as he may be, he seems to always attempt a confrontation with his own psychological shortcomings and those of the world at large with an intelligent and empathic approach.

i will probably come back and add more later. there are a great many musicians in the world i can pay tribute to...

i've just become confused. sarcasm, if that's what you're doing, is pretty much always welcome in my books. that being said, it comes in many forms, so i can't always tell when it's present. sooo... are you actually obliged to merge these threads on some level or other? or are you just having some fun? either way, i don't care.

Ordinarily one of them would get locked or merged, but I think this one has greater potential to foster discussion (outside of whinging and sniping), so I would like it to remain open and see where it goes.

That said, I'll pitch in: I respect Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson for their complete unwillingness to comply with the media.

I respect Terrence Malick for leading a private, reclusive life, despite being such an important director. He's notorious for filming several hours of footage and trimming most of it away from the finished films, often to the disapproval of the actors. He also deals with theism in a positive light, and I can see both of these things being uncomfortable for him to be open about.
