Spotify: worth signing up?
Seems Spotify is now available in Ireland. I've tried it on the free but the ads are drivin me mad. Thinking of signing up, and the 4.99 deal looks good. Unlimited is better but a fiver more, and there's nothing there that I really need as additional benefits.
Just wondering, is it worth splurging on? I did find an album by Stars Of Heaven there, which I've been able to find nowhere else on the internet, so I'm intrigued. Be interested in the views of anyone who has had experience (good or bad) with this service. Cheers TH |
I absolutely love it.
I've been frustrated the past couple years with the way music has been laid out for me. In high school, building my music collection was a very important part of my life. With everything going digital, that part of my life pretty much stopped. I could listen to way more, but I felt music lost a personal touch for me. I got really sick of just downloading an ass ton of albums and adding them to my ever expanding digital library. Enter Spotify. It's easier than dedicating hours out of my life downloading tons of albums as it has most of the music I want. When I find something I really like, I take note of it and eventually buy it on vinyl. That way I'm also only buying albums I really like. So, yeah...I fully support Spotify. Granted, a lot of artists will argue they don't see **** for a few Spotify plays, but with a little tweaking of the system I think this is the way the future of music should be. Maybe to encourage buying physical albums artists could start including more interactive or creative packaging or extras or something. |
I have spotify premium, I'd say it's worth it. It does everything it's supposed to do and a bit more. I'm still shocked how many very unpoular underground bands are on it.
As far as it being unfair to individual artists; the payout to artists is slim, sure, but it's beneficial to labels. |
Worth getting. Premium streams at a higher quality, but I think Unlimited (one I have) is best value for money.
|
It's been available here since October. It's definitely well worth it, it's great having access to so much music through one application. I seem to be downloading less as a result as well.
There are however quite a lot of albums or even artists absent from it. There's been quite a few times where an album I wanted to listen to wasn't available. It's also easy to share playlists with other people, which is something we could start doing here on MB. |

I was pondering this very thing here today. Glad you brought it up! It would be so very nice to be able to take my playlists with me on my phone.
|
I am gonna start making one now. I'll post it in here when it's done (probably not tonight) and start a thread if enough people are interested.
|
I'm interested...I'll let you make it since I don't really have an idea for a playlist at the moment, but if I can make a suggestion so that it doesn't become a cluster**** of playlists, let's do a "MB featured playlist of the week" or something like that. I'd be more than willing to participate in something like that and the ease of sharing Spotify playlists means we can get an even better of everyone's music tastes around here.
I think theBig3 thought of something similar, but it hasn't taken off yet...so let's get it going! |
It's definitely worth it, Trollheart. I have Premium and it allows me to stream music on my iPhone (with regular you only can listen to the spotify radio), and it's helped me quite a bit with space issues on my phone. Plus it takes care of those annoying ads.

Yeah the one I am making is totally random, and close to three hours already... A theme would be better off in general.

I just stopped after a while. Better off using themes as suggested earlier. I have it in artist order personally and it flows okay.

I was a bit skeptical about downloading it at first because if I'm online I usually just listen to what I have on my iTunes library, but after a few weeks of hearing about it I decided to try it out. And it's great! If you have iTunes, it automatically adds your entire library onto your spotify account as well as connecting it to your Facebook (if you have one) so that you can send music to friends or see what they're listening to. One of my friends added a feature called soundrop to his, which is basically a playlist you and your friends can add songs to and listen together at the same time. That's probably the coolest part of it for me because we can vote up which songs to listen to next or put the playlist on shuffle or whatever... Anyways, it's worth checking out at least. I don't have the paid subscription because I don't care about streaming my music through an iPhone or blackberry or whatever and the commercials every few songs are short and don't bother me.
Hope I was able to give you a bit of info. |
Thanks for all the replies, guys n gals! Not one negative comment, so it's got to be a good idea then. I reckon though the premium will do me, as I say it's only a fiver a month and seems to have most of what I need. Putting playlists on phones etc doesn't interest me; if I'm out I listen to my Zen and always albums, usually one I'm considering for review. I don't ever listen to music on a phone. But everything else seems pretty cool so I reckon I will go for it. Well, I don't reckon; I will.
Not so sure about this playlist idea you're floating; how does that work? Would everyone contribute a song/songs or make their own playlists in toto that people can then download, as Goofle has? Maybe we could do both. If a theme is required, might I suggest something simple, like colours to begin? Anyway thanks again for the advice and well I guess I'll see yaz out there! :thumb: :) |

Do it Trollheart, its worth a fiver of anyones money. You only need to pay a tenner if you want to use Spotify on your phone, if youre just going to use it at home you only need to spend a fiver a month. No long contracts, a month to month thing. There are some bands and artists that arnt on Spotify but you cant have everything can you, and more importantly it makes Grooveshark look like a one legged man in an arse kicking competition.
Treat yourself Trollheart, you deserve it. :) |
I've done so. Now to start looking up obscure bands.... :D
|
Great! Usually as far as playlists go I just make artist-specific ones or throw together a bunch of random songs I like. Themed playlists sound like a cool idea so I might make a few later..

Yes. End of message.

One more question guys. I have it now, but am wondering about the upgrade. I'm on "Unlimited", if I switch to "Premium" is it possible to download the albums here to my ipod, or is it just iphone streaming or something else involved? I'm assuming no to the former, as otherwise it would pretty much mean getting albums for free, which sounds unlikely. It's still excellent for reviews as it means I don't have to buy an album I'm unsure of just to review it, and also of course once I come across something I really like I can go ahead and buy it but if there was other benefits to be had maybe I'd stretch it to the top level. Maybe.
Also great for getting those old, only-have-on-tape-or-vinyl albums I've been wanting to listen to for literally years! Thanks all TH |
No to the former, unfortunately.
|
Thanks Goofle. I expected that. Would be a bit mad otherwise. So what can you do? Stream? That only works with iphones I guess?
|
Hope this is the right place to post this!!

I believe the pro's of spotify are here. I don't know about the other you mentioned, but hopefully this helps. |
42??, sorry lost me!!! And thanks for the other link
|
How about bloom fm I've just made a new thread to see if its any good??
|
I have said I not sure if this was the right place to post this thread so as not many replies I thought it might not be. So thought I would try some where else!! Well I'm so sorry I did as I upset some one and it was nice if them to block my thread would have been better if they gave me a answer
|
It was merged into the other thread, because the other one serves the same purpose, and we try not to clutter the forum with repeated topics.
This one will be merged as well. :) |
I've been using Spotify for a while now, and now I couldn't imagine not using it. All the music you want to listen to, played with ease.

If it's in the wrong place it'll be moved to the right place, and it was. In here. |
I have it never use it
I tried making a simple playlist and post it on facebook gotta grow through like 4 hoops just to do that and other people cant even see it unless they also have spootify |
Well, duh! The playlists are made on Spotify, play through Spotify using their proprietary software: why would you even think it would be possible to play the music created on Spotify without the programme itself??
|
Yeah, I was gonna ask if you thought it was worth it.

I used to use Spotify when I was younger, but music isn't exactly hard to source from the internet. If there's an album I particularly want, 95% of the time I can find it somewhere. I know they have Spotify Mobile now, but I just prefer putting music onto my Ipod as I can take it with me and listen anywhere instead of just being stuck at a computer listening. |
I find it very handy for albums I want to review, but may not actually want to buy. Or for series I do, like the David Soul one. It was magic for that, hadn't to buy or download a single album! Sweet.
|
My thing is why pay for Spotify when YouTube is free.
|
you only have to pay for Spotify Premium. And, YouTube, c'mon man. It's too much fiddling about and the quality is usually bad.
I just like the notion of one day soon filling my 160GB Ipod, I'm getting there. Just a couple hundred more tracks. |
