Best Album of the 00's

It may not have been the best decade for music but it will be interesting to gather people's opinions on what was the finest album in the 'noughties'

DYLAN <3 04-30-2013 01:21 PM

Only one choice really. The Arctic Monkey's debut. A fantastic piece of music that summed up my young adolescent life. Great album and still feels fresh as anything today. Marvellous!

Janszoon 04-30-2013 01:25 PM

The options in this poll seem pretty rock-centric for something in the general music forum. Are you looking for best album in general, or just best rock album?

Thinkofthechildren 04-30-2013 01:30 PM

What a sh*te decade. But I think Yankee Foxtrot Hotel by Wilco overall is the best of the decade.

Surely you're missing a Kanye album there. My vote goes to Graduation, but Late Registration and Dropout are just as good.

Also, big ups to Kasabian self titled. Some absolute stormers on there.

Viva La Vida by Coldplay is a masterpiece of an album. Only one bad song on the album (the most famous one).

Fever To Tell By the Yeah Yeah yeahs.

DYLAN <3 04-30-2013 01:34 PM

But these albums have regularly been voted as the finest of the decade? I have read your '25 albums' list and it seems like you have gone for obscurity over quality. I am not sure if you have done this intentionally but none of them albums you have mentioned would be in my top 50 let alone the top 25.

I respect the Kanye shout. But Kasabian? their best album is the third by a long way. I was going to put A rush of Blood for Coldplay but was trying to please everyone. You know how these work ;)

Anteater 04-30-2013 01:50 PM

Is this thread trying to troll or something? A decade combined with assloads of genres and hundreds of new bands a year = no consensus whatsoever.

Paedantic Basterd 04-30-2013 01:54 PM

You mean, the best out of your personal favourites?

Er… well, I guess that's why it's my list not yours. But I was asking a serious question about this thread: Are you just looking for rock music as the poll implies? Or are you open to anything? I ask because a lot of the best albums of the 00s, in many people's opinion, are not rock albums.

djchameleon 04-30-2013 02:39 PM

I can already tell that "Any Other" is definitely going to win this thread based on that selection chosen.

Not sure they can but I bet they will want to capitalize on it when they release "Any Other: The Deluxe Edition" and "Any Other: The Super Deluxe Box Set".

Thinkofthechildren 04-30-2013 06:55 PM

Play by Moby if it was released in the decade.

Norg 04-30-2013 11:50 PM

I could make a good case for Silverchair-Diorama is the best if not deff in the Top 5 just good songs from top to bottom esp this one

Silverchair - Tuna In The Brine - YouTube

Zer0 05-01-2013 03:14 AM

Any Other is on to a clear winner. The OP must have heard quite a lot of music from the 00's.

It was released in 1999, something you would have found out by using Google.

blackdragon123 05-01-2013 05:37 AM

Play is a good album. not sure who this Dylan kid is....

Goofle 05-01-2013 07:57 AM

It would be harsh of me to type it as "Any Other", but certainly appropriate.

This list was compiled with reference to many 'best of' lists compiled of the 2000s including 'Rolling Stone' and 'Q'. It was simply to gather people's opinions of the music on offer which I think best represent the decade and which at the same time have been critically acclaimed. Seeing as the well produced 'Any Other' seems to have run away with this one, does anyone else have a top 10 or top 5 to suggest?

Will be interesting to see if someone else's top 10 or top 5 is met with the same kind of universal love.

That's where the problem is. Keep in mind that no top ten list is ever definitive, for example Rolling Stone and Q tend to be aimed at a particular audience while if a magazine like Metal Hammer or a DJ magazine was to compile a list it would be completely different. You will never get a list that accurately represents the decade.

For me the closest list to being any way 'definitive' would be Rate Your Music's top albums of the 00's. The user catchment is far more varied than the readership of magazines like Rolling Stone or Q and the result is a far more diverse list.

As for someone's own personal list, you will see that everyone's list will be different as people here have widely varied tastes and a subjective view on music.

AgeOfOddz 05-04-2013 04:39 AM

Any of these.

PoorOldPo 05-04-2013 05:38 AM

This is definitely one of the best of that decade.

Even then, there are a lot of questionable choices that are very high. (Vespertine, Third, etc.)

Arctic Monkeys debut is in there, cool. But no Original Pirate Material or Boy In Da Corner?

one of the most intricate, elegant, and awe inspiring records ever. I could get lost in all of the layered, interesting and multifaceted tracks. Not to mention it's hella beautiful.

I need to listen to that album again. I've had it for a long time but only given it a few spins. I can see where it would be something that requires many listens to fully appreciate.

I dunno man. The first two are both very, very good. 2nd had a good story but the first was just different. Blinded by the Lights and Dry Your Eyes are as good as anything he did though.

When OPM came out I first heard 'Weak Become Heroes' and thought it was shit.

Yeah BIDC is a classic don't think anyone disagrees with that. When I Luv U came out I just thought 'What the hell is this?'

Adam Duffill 06-01-2013 09:08 AM

I'd personally go for Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty - Really enjoyed every song on that record & the production is absolutely brilliant as well! :)

Charlemagne 06-01-2013 12:30 PM

The clear choice here is any other. There have been so many phenomenal albums coming out in the 2000s and none of those albums stick out to me at all as best of that decade. I'd pick...

Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise
The National - Alligator
The Hold Steady - Boys & Girls In America
Iron & Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle
Okkervil River - Black Sheep Boy
Madvillain - Madvillainy
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Destroyer - Destroyer's Rubies
The Microphones - The Glow, Pt 2.
Johnny Hobo & The Freight Trains - Caught In The Act of Not Being Awesome

(Okay that last one was stretching it a bit, it's just a personal favorite of mine, but I tried to keep the other albums to ones that were consistently on year end lists when they came out, that I also happen to love.)

The **** outta here, I know music like most things is supposed to be subjective blah blah blah, but I'm not having that. Genius, really? :banghead:

You probably should have just posted this in the Indie/Alternative forum but my choice happens to be on that list and it's The Strokes - Is This It

Although I do feel the same way about this album I happen to think their best work to date is Humbug. Whatever People Say That I am Thats What I'm Not is a brilliant album and my coming of age album I guess, I was 17 and had got my first proper job and moved in to my own flat. Good and bad memories this album will always take me back there, also as a debut album it stands up on its own like Is This It, it was a tough call.
