I think even with the few clunkers in that album, it's one of the best releases of the 90's. I think the one criticism is that because there is so much, the same amount of thought was not put into each song as there was on Siamese Dream. Still, once Billy Corgan broke past his writer's block after Gish, he was on an upward trend of songwriting creativity that didn't stop until after they first broke up in 2000. Take the best of Mellon Collie and the best of the Aeroplane Flies High and you have more good songs than a lot of bands hope for in a whole career. I know a lot of peoples' opinions differ, but he honed his craft all the way through Machina. Adore is beautiful and I think it gets a bad rap because there aren't a lot of guitars in it. Machina II is even better than Machina...Slow Dawn, Speed Kills, Here's To the Atom Bomb...I think they are all pop classics.

Damn it, I just went off on the Pumpkins again.

I really like Adore as well, I agree it gets a bad rap. It's possible I listened to that more than I did Mellon Collie. I never gave Machina a chance though (either one). At this point I think it's too late, his voice is too grating for me to listen to anything I'm not already a fan of.

I'd recommend giving at least a listen once the reissues come out. In fact, I'd say he's at his most listenable on the Machina albums. I don't think his voice got overly grating until after their "reunion". His voice definitely hasn't aged well.

It's far from being their best album, and it does contain a few turds, but on the whole it's far from being a turd. I just wish that they made a more focused single album than a sprawling and patience-testing double album. But when it gets good it gets good.
