To be fair, there's a lot of music in the world, and many people are probably comparably well-versed in genres that you may not even know exist.

I agree. I'm pretty well versed in classical, rock, and jazz and most of the sub-genres of each (classical and jazz have sub-sub-sub-sub genres even, heheh). But beyond that, I'm not all that knowledgeable. MB is a great place for me because I'm constantly learning about genres and artists I have never heard before.

Yeah I agree. This questionnaire is very heavily based on "older" music, from jaz to blues and right back to classical. Had he asked who plays bass in Slayer or name both Iron Maiden guitarists, or maybe what was The Pet Shop Boys' most successful album, I think a lot more people would know these things. Like Necro says, even he and I, at the fifty-year mark, are stumped by some of these questions, so how are kids going to know?

I think it's too one-sided and certainly does not answer the question "how much do you know about music" unless you qualify that by inserting either the word "older" or "certain types of". It needs to be more comprehensive. Look at the list: how many questions refer to music/artistes less than 40 years old in terms of how long they've been around. I mean: Scott Joplin? Give me a break! Seriously. More "modern" questions will give you a far fairer and more balanced result.

It's not about age though. You don't have to be "old" to know this stuff just like you don't have to be "young" to know everything about music released in the last 10 years. I'm 23 and would honestly not be able to answer the questions you're suggesting here, without turning to Wikipedia. I know about things that I like, so obviously this sort of thing can be very subjective.

I think that if more modern questions were included along with these questions, yes there would be a more balanced result. Most MB members are seriously lacking in basic knowledge of classical music (in this case, Western Art Music), and jazz (did I just read that someone doesn't know who Miles Davis is?), so I think the results would still be fairly unbalanced.

You're welcome to make up a similar questionnaire :D

I have no interest in helping anyone pass. I'm interested in what musical foundation they stand on because that tells me how good of a job we do passing on our musical legacy.

Quote:

Nothing if we don't teach them about it.

Quote:

Hopefully none. Our musical legacy is far, far older than that. You can't determine how well a 14 yo girl has been educated musically by questioning her about Justin Bieber. Of course she knows who he is. But does she know what made his music even possible? I seriously doubt it (I doubt Bieber knows either). For example, do you think Bieber might own a HUGE debt to this man?

EDDIE HOLMAN hey there lonely girl original video - YouTube

And if I meet a 14 yo girl and ask her why she listens to Bieber trash and she says, "He's carrying on a great crooning tradition that goes back to Eddie Holman and Smokey Robinson and Clyde McPhatter and Nolan Strong" I'd have to conclude this person is no idiot. But as of right now I can't conclude these girls that listen to him are anything else but idiots.

Quote:

I mean: Scott Joplin? Give me a break! Seriously. More "modern" questions will give you a far fairer and more balanced result.
That would be missing the point entirely. I'm asking about Joplin because people should know about Scott Joplin. Why? Because he is one of the most important composers that ever lived. How? Because he inspired people like Irving Berlin to write "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (actually, Berlin stole part of a Joplin piece and used it in the song for which Joplin was highly displeased) and a million singers have done that song which is what gave you the later artists you think I should be concentrating on. Joplin's rags were loved by a cornetist named King Oliver so much that he had the sheet music bound into one volume so he could practice them. When he took on a student, he taught that kid how to play them because he wanted the kid to learn the difference between jazz and blues. That kid was Louis Armstrong--one of the most important musical figures EVER.

So would it kill a person to go back and listen to Joplin? That's what I did and I became a Joplin devotee. In fact, I became a ragtime devotee. I am far more musically enriched because of that than I could ever have been had I never bothered. Who is a better pianist--a kid who can only play Lady Gaga and Alicia Keyes or one who can play that as well as Beethoven, Joplin and Art Tatum (and if you haven't listened to Art Tatum prepare to be astounded)?

David Lee Roth is all well and good but he himself said in interviews that people really should hear this version:

Louis Prima - Just a Gigolo - JazzAndBluesExperience - YouTube

Wouldn't it be a shame if the only version we remember for posterity is Roth's--oh, wait!--that IS how we remember it.

Or how about this?

Oh man, I think I just found my new best friend

Trollheart 06-15-2013 05:38 PM

I am not going to quote all that, but Lord Larehip you certainly don't take constructive criticism very well. I was merely pointing out NOT that people should not know about Scott Joplin or Mozart, of course they should, but that your questionnaire based a person's knowledge of music SOLELY on those eras. I offered you an alternative view but you obviously don't want to listen to anything else. Must come with the title.

Anyhow, thanks for the caustic replies. My comments were meant as a constructive way to help you streamline this but sure in the end I really don't care about your survey, and I think Urban answered it best.

Good luck with the survey and whatever it's for.

By the way, to your last question, no it isn't. I came here to discuss music I like. Everyone here knows I'm rooted in my own preferred genres. I know what I like and seldom step outside those. Not everyone wants to hear everything that was ever written. Some people do, but those who are happy with what they listen to should not be denigrated for "not being adventurous" enough. I have more than enough to listen to at the moment thanks. Perhaps I will listen to Joplin, perhaps not. But not because you tell me to.

And now, I go back to whatever I do and leave you with your new best friend.

You're welcome to make up a similar questionnaire :D

That is what I always thought the main function of any music forum was, to gain more insight and knowledge from other members.

It would be sad if the lounge forum was the most popular forum, at any music site as far as that goes.

Can I have my tuppence worth back now please?

Oh, and my Sherlock Holmes comment was of course a joke...

I did okay on the quiz but I would definitely flunk a quiz with questions about contemporary pop artists like Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, and Mumford and Sons.

Most of the artists on your quiz were before my time but any person with a curiosity about music should know about Scott Joplin, Cole Porter, John Coltrane and Duke Ellington.

Some of the roots music questions are challenging even to the musically educated forum members. Few people outside of acoustic guitar players know what the Carter lick is. I know Carter lick is, but I can't explain it to a lay person unless I have a guitar as a prop. It's like trying to explain what hammer-on or a pull-off is without using a guitar to demonstrate the techinques.

Holland Dozier & Holland were Motown's top songwriting team but Norman Whitefield, Barrett Strong, Deke Richards Smokey Robinson and Motown president Barry Gordy were also prolific composers for Motown. I know that Lamont, Dozier and Holland wrote most of the Supreme's big hits but I'd have to do a fact check if you asked me to name a Lamont, Dozier, and Holland song, excluding the Supreme's biggest hits. It's a tough question even for a person with a knowledge of soul music.

I'd be surprised if over 20% of MB forum members percentage know who Blind Willie McTell, Charley Patton and Fred McDowell are. Of course I'd be among the ignorant had one of your questions had been about mariachi music or gangsta rap.

The title "King of the Delta Blues Men" is a dubious one because Robert Johnson, Son House, Willie Brown and Charlie Patton have all been called the "King of the Delta Blues Singers" at one time or another.

Patton was playing a full decade before Son House or Robert Johnson. However Patton's generational peer, Willie Brown was a better singer and guitar player than Patton. But Willie Brown lost his claim to "king" when he only recorded 8 songs and disappeared into obscurity forever, while Patton recorded nearly 100 songs.

The Carter lick is a method of guitar strum that became the foundation of country music. That it had something to do with the Carter Family is all I was looking for. Basically, it's plucking the bass string of a chord followed by the rest of the chord in a kind "oom-pah oom-pah" sort of rhythm that roves up and down the fingerboard. Done correctly, it sounds like two guitars. People thought it was two and were surprised that Maybelle was doing it all by herself.

"You Can't Hurry Love" was a big hit for Phil Collins. I only asked for one song. "Can't Help Myself" "How Sweet It Is" "Bernadette" "Baby Love" "Keep Me Hanging On" "Reach Out" "Same Old Song" "This Old Heart of Mine" and there's enough contemporary singers still doing these songs that people today should know who HDH is.

Of the choices I gave only one could have had the title. Blind Willie McTell was a Piedmont bluesman, Lightnin' Hopkins was a Texas bluesman and Mississippi Fred McDowell never lived on the delta but founded a blues subgenre called North Mississippi. He spent the first half of his life in Memphis. Patton is the only one listed that lived on the delta so he is the only viable choice.

I'll bet your average Brit knows more about blues than your average American.

Knowing who Eddie Holman is isn't a prerequisite for listening to Justin Bieber though.

Lord Larehip 06-15-2013 10:42 PM

Of course it isn't but Bieber is not only not particularly original, Eddie Holman could out-sing him on worst day. And the song is the type that made Bieber who he is--"Hey there lonely girl / don't you know this lonely boy loves you" That kind of stuff made Bieber's career and he's just a Holman retread.

Congrats to Charlemagne for being the only respondent thus far to get question 24 correct. It's a hard one but I wanted to see how many people actually believe he killed Mozart. There is not a shred of evidence that he did. The accusation is absurd since he was every bit as celebrated and well known in Vienna at that time as Mozart.

Everybody who answers question 27 gets it right which is encouraging but I should point out that Beethoven INSPIRED the romantic period but was NOT a romantic composer himself. I'm not happy with my wording on that one.

So basically you created a series of questions to stroke your e-peen and claim musical superiority over others? Gotcha.

Also why would you give this so called "survey" to people on a music forum? People on a music forum aren't really a good indication of what the general listening public is listening to so whatever results you are looking for won't even begin to paint an accurate picture of the background people have in music today.

Judging from the responses thus far, it would appear that Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys are in danger of being forgotten. I started listening to Mr. Wills maybe a dozen or so years ago after I bought a CD of Emmett Miller. Mr. Miller was a blackface minstrel of the 20s who did a series of recordings that was one of the prime documents of country music even though Miller's stuff was jazz. The reason is that the country cats dug him and incorporated his vocal techniques. He did the earliest recorded version of "I Ain't Got Nobody" which Louis Prima reworked into "Just a Gigolo." Miller also did "Lovesick Blues" which Hank Williams Sr. loved so much, he made it his signature song and billed himself as the Lovesick Blues Boy. And Tommy Duncan was a country singer who auditioned for Bob Wills and both discovered their mutual love for Emmett Miller and worked with each other for many years. The band was home-based in Tulsa, OK. In fact, over 600 musicians were Texas Playboys at some point or other. Some of them were unbelievable musicians, just incredible. They went on to join other bands having learned how to perform from Wills and his influence crept into country music and jazz from every nook and cranny. he is one of the founders of Western swing along with Milton Brown.

Wills grew up in a white sharecropping family and picked cotton in the fields with the black children. After the workday was over, he'd run home and grab his fiddle (he came from a long line of fiddlers) and join in with the black dance numbers which gave him a great love of blues, rags and jazz. He once rode 50 miles on horseback just to see Bessie Smith perform. Wills was the first performer to bring drums to Opryland. This was in the late 40s. Up til then, drums were seen as an abomination among country purists. Real country don't have no drums. But Wills' sound required a drummer. He was told no drums. He told them that he wouldn't perform and they'd have give everyone back their money. They relented but said to keep the drummer out of sight. As soon as they left, Wills ordered his band to move the drums to the very front of the stage. When the curtain went up, the drummer was in full view up front and the management was furious and blacklisted him from Opry land for a couple of years but Red Foley invited him back and Wills again brought a drummer with him. Drums would not be used at Opryland again until the seventies! Remember the name--Bob Wills--the Father of Western Swing!

This first one is a very early Wills piece from 1935 and one of my favorites:

This next one was so loved by Chuck Berry (who grew up like Ray Charles listening to country music) that he borrowed it to make "Maybelline":
