Cool Is Robin Thicke the new Vanilla Ice?

Robin Thicke decided to preemptively sue Marvin Gaye's family over his #1 single "Blurred Lines." I call "Ice Ice Baby".

i have no idea who Robin thicke is but what's so bad about sampling?

sometimes sampling leads ppl to find the original artist
i remember eminem sampled 'Dream on' by aerosmith and that's how i discovered Dream on thnx to fricking eminem >_>

I admit, most times they sample a popular artist is to make a popular radio friendly song cause it's a tune ppl know already so they tweak a hit to make another hit and most times it works too

I don't see anything wrong with sampling. But when you sample someone else's music, you need to pay them for it. Robin Thicke has decided he is going to sue Marvin Gaye's family so that he doesn't have to pay.

its a bit of an ******* move but i kinda get it.. he doesn't wanna pay..
but is he actually involved personally in the law suit? this seems like the type of situation that the record labels work out among themselves..

But if we are talking about "Doing the right thing" yea, i think he should pay up.

Here is a news article: The Social Climber: Robin Thicke vs. Marvin Gaye's Battle Over 'Blurred Lines' - ABC News

Here are the two songs...

Got to give it up:
Marvin Gaye~Got to give it up - YouTube

Blurred Lines:
Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines ft. T.I., Pharrell - YouTube

They don't sound a damn thing alike to me. Sounds like Gaye's family is out there trying to mine new artists for money. They don't have a good track record "representing" him in the first place.

I like Robin Thicke but I think its a low move to sue the estate of Marvin Gaye and quite disrespectful.

The song was clearly inspired by "Got To Give It Up".

The first time I heard "Blurred Lines" I instantly thought of Got To Give It Up. I dont think he got permission to use Michael Jacksons "woooaaaa" adlibs from Dont Stop Till You Get Enough because he is not credited in the credits of the song...

Love Robin but this is low. The song was clearly inspired by Got To Give It Up and Im surprised the MJ Estate hasnt made a case

Disrespectful and low move? They were threatening him. This song would have ended up in court anyways. So he took a preemptive strike against them.

I think its disrespectful because Robin himself has said that it was inspired by Got to Give It Up and him and Pharell were listening to the song to find inspiration. I think his team made a wack arguement by implying that the Marvin Gaye estate is trying to take ownership of a "era". I think Marvin's family is just trying to make a case for that specific song alone. The song CLEARLY sounds like Got To Give It Up.

Pharrell has been known to plagiarise in the past. Michael Jackson is not even credited for that song and they sampled DSTYGE.

Inspired doesn't mean shit really. So what!? that's not how suing over royalty to songs work just because another song was inspired by it. He doesn't owe them shit. Fuck his estate for trying to bully Robin Thicke in the first place.
