Default I've just gone with "Do I like it?"

I've realized that I have no idea how to tell if a piece of music is good or bad. Is it an ability that you're born with? Do you have to have a degree in music to have a valid opinion? I don't know what makes the Beatles or Nirvana considered "good," and what makes another "bad."

Exactly how I feel. Some people have to analyse music to the nth degree, or will refuse to listen to something or mock it because it sounds derivative or unoriginal. I don't care. I like Bon Jovi and I don't care who knows. I love Dan Fogelberg. I adore Tom Waits, Nanci Griffith, Marillion, Ten, Springsteen, Steve Earle, Maiden, Threshold, Shadow Gallery and a million others. Maybe slightly less.

Could I tell you WHY I love those bands? No. I just do. Their music speaks to me, makes me feel a certain way, and I always look forward to new material from them, and am crushed if the new album is no good. I suppose I've got comfortable with my music, though I will branch out when I can. But generally it's exactly that: I listen to certain bands because I like them, and not to others because they do nothing for me. Doesn't mean they're not great musicians or adored by millions. Just not for me.
