Have you listened to the new Nevermen album much? I gave it a few listens but wasn't all that impressed initially.

I just received it in the mail today and haven't downloaded the MP3s yet, so I've only heard one song from when it was first announced. My expectations aren't super high - I was tempted by the artwork and color and made an impulse buy.

Floydy 02-10-2016 09:55 PM

I believe it was Simply Red's 'Picture Book' in 1986

I think that's about the same time I last bought any vinyl as well. Maybe something as late as the early 90's, but if I did I can't think what that might be.

That doesn't count getting presents for other people, however. A couple years ago I bought my mother a few LP's for Christmas, since she still has a turntable.

I highly recommend getting a turntable again. If cash is an issue just cut back on some of the inessentials like clothes and food. I'd been without a working one for three years and just bought myself a new one for Christmas - so much fun. Great sound, big album artwork, and the whole ceremony of putting on a record where the turntable becomes a shrine.

Sidewinder: I'd love to see your whole collection, some awesome stuff just out of what you've posted on this thread.

Thanks! I post a lot of records on Instagram (as I listen to them) and have just created a separate account for that a few days ago, so I don't annoy all my friends with records every other day. :) I'm still trying to transfer some past records to that profile, but I should be caught up in about a week and posting new stuff again. Also I've been cross-posting them to a tumblr:

Instagram: @allthatyouseeandhear
Tumblr: We Will Control All That You Seen and Hear

And there's also my Rateyourmusic profile that catalogs everything I have and listen to:

No idea but it would have been around 1985 or 1986.

innerspaceboy 02-12-2016 06:32 PM

Today I bought the 6LP + book + poster + pop up + digital download of Harmonia's Complete Works that came out in Germany recently.

Amusingly, the digital archive of the box set that I torrented to hear them for the first time was far superior to the low bitrate MP3 that came via a download code with the official release.

That aside, I'm ecstatic about this set. Check it out on my member journal.

Two more recent pick ups, both albums' I've been meaning to grab but had forgotten about momentarily.

The last one I bought was Illinoise by Sufjan Stevens

EPOCH6 02-16-2016 10:25 AM

Picked up the following yesterday:

Ten Years After - A Space In Time
Steppenwolf - The Second
John Lee Hooker - Greatest Hits
The Chamber Brothers - Greatest Hits
Delaney & Bonnie - The Best of Delaney & Bonnie

I'm putting a hold on vinyl purchasing until my girlfriend finishes school (next week) and gets a job (hopefully within the next two weeks). I'm having withdrawals. I wasn't sure what to do with myself last Sunday. Saturday I went skiing, but Sunday I was craving a record store visit. Jitters! The good news is, I'm remembering some things that need to get done around the house and that I should be contacting people for estimates.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 02-16-2016 12:53 PM

Just think of how great it will be to hit the store again once the hold is over.

I broke my deal about not buying records for a while. I made the mistake of going into a shop this weekend "just to browse". First thing of interest I saw was the Q and Not U record for $5.99 in excellent condition, couldn't pass that up and the lady wouldn't get mad as she likes the record too. The Pink Floyd album wasn't so cheap but I couldn't resist as it's one of my favorites. The Autechre is something I've been wanting to score for a long time and I just purchased that on Discogs this morning. Dammit. Guess I'll have to hide that one as it cost me the price of about 4 new records.

Paul & Linda McCartney - Ram (1971)
Been wanting to pick this one up for a while, and almost bought it a few months ago for $15 or $20. I found it for $7 yesterday, vinyl looks VG+ and sleeve just has a bit of tearing in the spine.

Glad you found a copy! Such a carefree album. I also picked up Dave Depper's The Ram Project which was a lot of fun as well.

Congrats!

I haven't listened to anything by Nirvana for probably a couple of years or more, but I couldn't resist picking up a copy of this numbered, limited, double LP reissue of "Bleach"

Amazed to watch kids buying vinyl in HMV - its all the stuff from the early 1970s, and the better the sleeve art the better they sell, according to one sales assistant.

innerspaceboy 03-03-2016 09:41 PM

Sun Ra's Blue Thumb label Space is the Place has been a sought-after grail for me for quite some time. Today I learned there was a recent reissue pressed in the Netherlands - the first since it's original issue in 1973, so I wasted not a moment's hesitation. It was my lucky day - this copy had just come in to my local shop!

I joined a monthly record club a year or so back and have been pretty happy with the stuff they send. but as for on purpose purchasing, the 5 most recent i bought were:
Dangerdoom - The Mouse And The Mask
Prince - 1999
Smashing Pumpkins - siamese dream
Shovels & Rope - O' Be Joyful
and
Junior Boys - Big Black Coat (for my wife)

On one hand I am stoked that records are making a comeback, but on the other hand, if artists are just pressing the mp3 versions of their digital music to vinyl it kinda defeats the whole "sounds better" aspect.

also: Innerspaceboy, i was just looking into that album not long ago, glad to see I'm not the only one :)

Probably more than half of my collection is due to dollar bins/thrift stores etc, I always say to myself "ok, I have a budget of "X" dollars then I wander to the record area and that all goes out the window. I have reaped the audiophile benefits from many an old person's passing.

Very cool! I'm fortunate in that, for the vast majority of the recordings I seek, quality mastering is the standard and not the exception. Reissues from analog-sourced masters from Brain, Ohr, ECM, DG, and Nonesuch are always well done.

I think the only bum master I own is the Plain Recordings reissue of Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space, but I was well-aware of that going into the purchase.

Also - excellent scores from the record club! May I ask the name of the service to which you've subscribed?

'Vinylmeplease' I like that they acknowledge that an album is to be thought of start to finish, as one complete work. instead of a bunch of songs compiled together. So I could get behind that idea at least to test the waters with them. It has been pretty nice so far, on top of getting introduced to new music they often re-release classics and most are custom pressed into colourful records and that adds a layer to the aesthetic.
for example: a little bit back they sent Black Sabbath - Paranoid pressed on a purple-ish multicolor record,

Thanks for the headsup on those companies, it's nice to know audiophilia is rampant
