What was the last vinyl you bought?

See title.

I got 3 when I last went to Fopp, actually.

Boards of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest
Gogol Bordello - Pura Vida Conspiracy (white, also including a 7'' and a CD)
Joanna Newsom - The Milk Eyed Mender

What about you?

Plankton 10-09-2013 01:49 PM

I haven't bought vinyl in decades. I think the last one I purchased was Black Sabbath - Mob Rules.

Charlemagne 10-09-2013 08:00 PM

The last vinyl I got was probably An Autobiography by Old Gray, but that doesn't count because I ordered it back in February and it just got here this past month.

So actually bought recently?

The Wild - Dreams Are Maps
The Front Bottoms - The Front Bottoms
The Wonder Years - The Greatest Generation
The World Is A Beautiful Place and I am No Longer Afraid To Die - Whenever, If Ever.

Frownland 10-10-2013 09:33 AM

On Saturday I was doing some dollar bin surfing and I came out with
Yes - Going for the One
Yes - Tormato
Modern Jazz Quintet - Patterns

I like 2/3 of these albums and took a chance on all of them, so it's a good haul.

Paul Smeenus 10-10-2013 09:39 AM

Tormato has some good tracks, especially "On The Silent Wings of Freedom", but I wish there was some kind of Wakeman filtef for that album.

Psy-Fi 10-10-2013 10:02 AM

Waiting for this one to arrive in the mail...

Fantastic album cover art by Alan Forbes. I may have to frame this one and hang it on the wall in my music room (after I record it!)

Going for the One had its moments (several, actually), but I don't like the cheese they're serving. I though that Tormato had better moments (although it came with a plate of cheese as well) and more of them than Going for the One, tbh. Judging by your post and the fact that I got Going for the One because I've seen the cover in so many places, this probably isn't a popular opinion.

GFTO is a better album than Tormato IMO, Awaken is a particularly good track. Tormato has up moments, esp Silent Wings of Freedom, but Wakeman's tone sucks throughout and Circus of Heaven is Jon Anderson at his touchy-feely worst IMO.

Neither are as good as the albums between The Yes Album and Relayer (which is my favorite Yes album). I like Tales From Topographic Oceans although I admit it's padded. They had too much good stuff for 1 album, not enough for two, but the good outweighs the filler for me.

Wait, you plan on just ripping a vinyl to MP3... and then hanging it? That's it? Really?

Sequoioideae 10-12-2013 09:24 PM

For me? Well...

Psychic Ills "Radar Eyes (The Godz)
A longtime Psychic Ills fan, ever since I was in High School, they were a bit of an obsession. I may not like them as much after Mirror Eye (Wicked album!), but they still mean a lot to me.

The Holydrug Couple "Noctuary"
Heard this a few weeks ago via a post from a label on facebook, immediately fell in love with "It's Dawning" and bought the album via vinyl after intense listening via pirated copy.

Both artists are on the same label (Sacred Bones), hence why I got both of these at the same time.

I don't rip my vinyl to MP3, I record it directly to CD with a Roland 24-bit Digital 8-track recorder. I also have a cassette deck hooked up to my home stereo system, so I still have the option of recording to tape at the same time.

http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...psf0320c97.jpg

CDX-1: DiscLab | Roland U.S.

I have a few albums framed and hung on my wall. Some are albums I've had autographed by various musicians I've met over the years and others are just because I like the cover art.
Most of my albums are filed in my collection where they rarely see the light of day, so I like to display a few of my favorites from time to time.
And I can always change the albums in the frames when I want to.

Yeah, I play vinyl when I'm at home, but I can't play my vinyl on a boombox, or at work, or in my car, or in a hotel room.
It's nice to have a portable copy on CD, or HDD, or a USB stick in addition to the vinyl copy.
And I already have the recording equipment hooked up, so why not use it?

Vinyl purchases!
I purchased a new-to-me vintage receiver a few weeks ago, so we're finally able to use our turntable and play our record collection. Also bought a set of new-to-me speakers. Where do we talk about non-musician audio equipment around here, anyway? So I've bought a few things recently, and suspect I will continue to buy vinyl. I hope I don't go crazy, because there are a shit-ton of things I would love to own on vinyl!

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/507e90fefd1...8a/5441937.jpg

Viet Cong - Viet Cong (2014)
I pre-ordered this limited edition white vinyl when it was first announced, have yet to play it though, I've just been listening to the digital version for the past few weeks since release. Perhaps this weekend.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/18bacba9b50...08/5327686.jpg

Viet Cong - Cassette (2013)
This one's also limited to 1500 with a screen-printed cover. I played side A last night on the TT, sounded magnificent.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/1035afc3727...6e/5448507.jpg

Ultimate Painting - Ultimate Painting (2014)
My album of the week, I first listened to it last Sunday in the car but a more serious listen with earbuds on Monday. Really impressive, reminding me of bands such as The Moles, The Feelies, and The Bats - but they're from England. I've listened to it a handful of times already and have ordered the vinyl.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/8358e9d4f8f...ff/5103569.jpg

Morgan Delt - Morgan Delt (2014)
I streamed/downloaded this last year but it took me some time to get around to a second listen (toward the end of the year). I really started to get it, and after a few more listens I decided it would be something nice to hear on vinyl. Ordered with Ultimate Painting as they're both on Trouble in Mind records.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/37b25c74793...d0/1390647.jpg

Marmoset - Today It's You (1999)

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/13090e718d7...23/2354341.jpg

Marmoset - Record in Red (2001)
I've been wanting to own these two Marmoset albums on vinyl ever since I first them 3-4 years ago. Really good 90s lo-fi indie rock. I remember when I first listened to Today It's You, I was reminded of Syd Barrett, Pavement, Sebadoh, and early Wire. It's a fun album packed with songs that are on the short side. The second album Record in Red is a more mellow affair with longer and more developed songs - had it been released in the 90s I'd call it a 90s classic. If you love 90s indie rock I highly suggest these two. Can't wait to spin that wax.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/0a91143c11b...11/5260560.jpg

White Fence - For the Recently Found Innocent (2014)
One of my favorite releases from last year, so fucking good. An amazing take on 60s garage/psych pop, it's like a lost gem. Picked it up on vinyl yesterday at a local shop.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/4836a059cd5...f3/2470051.jpg

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet (1968)
My favorite Stones album, I can't not have this on vinyl. I've been reading Keith Richards' book Life and also found a playlist of all the tracks mentioned during the book, so I've been listening to that on and off. I'm familiar with all the stones stuff but it's been great hearing all the blues artists that influenced him. There are a lot of Stones tracks in the playlist too of course, and I just got through the part of the book where he talks about recording for Beggars Banquet. Really interesting how he got the guitar sound on several of the tracks - recorded on acoustic in a motel room with a tape recorder, then played in the studio through speakers and recorded again to tape. Makes for a cool grizzly electric sound, but there's no electric guitar at all. This is gonna be great on vinyl.

More vinyl purchases yesterday (all albums I owned in other formats already):

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/268c7967e54...82/1285049.jpg

Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970)

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/dcc90ae3ee5...e4/2489419.jpg

Spirit - The Family That Plays Together (1968)

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/448359e4248...00/1813602.jpg

The Sorrows - Take a Heart (1965)
I can't believe I ran across this. It's really the only freak beat album I know, but I've been promoting it ever since I discovered it maybe 5 years ago. Very quality stuff, and the vinyl condition is very good. Sleeve not so great, but that's ok.

Vinyl purchases this weekend:

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/12380e58230...83/1549221.jpg

Small Faces - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968)
A psych pop gem, glad to find a used copy of this locally when I wasn't even looking. Actually my girlfriend pulled it out of the bin, I glanced over and said "oooooh" and she said "I support you buying this".

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/3c3c231ac6c...e2/2342271.jpg

Chad VanGaalen - Soft Airplane (2008)
Been looking for this one since I started buying vinyl again, but as I haven't found it anywhere I decided to order online from the label. Because for some reason Amazon only has Japanese versions for like $130. This is my favorite of his albums, but fuck paying $130.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/47a97776e47...c3/4459926.jpg

https://newburycomics.com/stores/new...axis_vinyl.jpg

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love (1967)
Been hoping to find this one on vinyl too, as it's my favorite Hendrix album. Saturday while perusing some feeds on Instagram, I noticed a nice clear orange version from a vinyl junkie I'm following. After I quick search I learned it's an "Exclusive Vinyl Release" from Newbury Comics, limited to 2500 copies. So I ordered it.

https://newburycomics.com/stores/new...tsii_vinyl.jpg

Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II (1984)
Same story as The Hendrix album above, except it was a result of browsing the exclusive vinyl on the Newbury site. This one limited to 500 copies. Again, favorite release from the artist, though Up on the Sun is kind of tied.

sidewinder 03-20-2015 12:21 PM

Alright now for some vinyl. If you read the above post you'll see I purchased the Cold Pumas album Persistent Malaise on vinyl, and I won't repeat it here. The rest, including what I picked up on RSD:

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/84b49c1ba9a...0e/5602558.jpg

Built to Spill - Untethered Moon (2015)
Hell yes, I was anticipating this vinyl release more than anything on RSD. I went to the shop around 11am, and waited in line about an hour for it while others were picking up limited releases. Luckily it came with a CD, as opposed to a download code, so I was able to toss it in the car stereo as I drove around the rest of the day. I enjoyed the album and have played it 4-5 times already, thanks Doug!

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/d9f52e9287f...2f/2311823.jpg

Kurt Vile - Constant Hitmaker (2008)
Never heard this one and ran across a used copy. I'm trying to be selective about what I get on vinyl but sometimes you just gotta take a gamble. First side seemed good, but last night I started the second side and wasn't so into it so I shut it off and put the Built to Spill record on again. It was sounding like throwaway home recordings, I'll have to try again some other time.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/0ec00a54d7a...2d/3667762.jpg

Panda Bear - Tomboy (2012)
Found a used copy of this on white vinyl. Sweet.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/43ebbd5f505...ed/3603282.jpg

Chad VanGaalen - Diaper Island (2011)
Another used find, something I've been looking for for a while.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/0295f5875d5...1b/2897819.jpg

Bauhaus - In a Flat Field (1980)
Favorite Bauhaus, thought it would be nice to have on vinyl.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/a8007bbd2ce...c2/4779144.jpg

The Doors - Waiting for the Sun (1968)
Used 1968 release with a well-worn sleeve but the record looks good. Not a massive Doors fan but it's a good one to spin on vinyl once in a while, and on my recent Doors exploration and tended to like this one a lot.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/13887ca4349...ad/1975840.jpg

Lou Reed - Transformer (1972)
Great album, of course, and this one happens to be red and in great condition. So that's cool and I bought it.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/ae5dc48a22d...61/1500140.jpg

Grizzly Bear - Horn of Plenty (2004)
I'm not sure I'd heard this one before. As I was out shopping on RSD, my girlfriend texted me a pic of this asking me to find it. It's a limited repress on leopard vinyl. I found it! Heard most of it and it's decent, but I prefer Veckatimest-era Grizzly Bear. I need to get that one on vinyl.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/fa008ed74c3...b8/1526197.jpg

Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues (1983)
The reissues are like $25 so I was happy to find this used one for about $11. Remain in Light is what I'd really like to get, but this is also a great one.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/faf53abaf23...1f/1560902.jpg

The Kinks - The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (1968)
These reissues are also really expensive, but this new copy was cheaper than I've seen it anywhere else, even online. And hell it's an amazing album, must have.

sidewinder 05-04-2015 01:59 PM

Couple of vinyl purchases:

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/37011eaa3e0...f5/3915575.jpg

Thee Oh Sees / Total Control - split [EP] (2011)
I haven't heard everything Thee Oh Sees have released, but I didn't even know this existed and was surprised to run across it at a punk record shop in town. I've really been digging Total Control lately so I thought I'd take a gamble on it. The tracks from Thee Oh Sees are live (and very well recorded) and Total Control's are studio tracks not on their other releases. They're pretty short unfortunately, but good.

http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/6ad6c5d1d0a...67/1724642.jpg

Silver Jews - American Water (1998)
An album I've enjoyed for quite a while - I was listening to it on the way to work this morning and thought it might be nice to have it on vinyl. So I ordered it.

sidewinder 11-18-2015 05:09 PM

I know this thread has been dead for quite some time, but with the fair bit of participation in the coloured vinyl thread, I thought it wouldn't hurt to give this a bump.

Today I picked up Courtney Barnett's Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit which to my surprise was pressed on orange vinyl.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...pL._SY300_.jpg

Also grabbed a copy of Fugazi's Repeater for $15 because it's an essential album to own that I've been meaning to grab for awhile now.

Hmm, we do have http://www.musicbanter.com/general-m...-listened.html, but it is nice having a dedicated vinyl thread since that one tends to focus on streams/downloads/unspecified listens. I'll start posting my purchases here. In fact, I may move some of my prior vinyl posts from that thread to this one. ;)

I think what's more ridiculous is the way you butchered the pluralization of the word vinyl not only by adding an 's' but by making it possessive with an apostrophe.

:bonkhead:

The plural of vinyl is vinyl. :thumb:

I'll start posting my purchases here. In fact, I may move some of my prior vinyl posts from that thread to this one. ;)

I agree! It's always nice to share your recent purchases and see what other people have picked up. It's also one way to make sure you don't miss out on any limited edition pressings or cool pick-ups that some may not be aware of.
