Default Guitar Excellence

This is probably THE most subjective topic, and a timeless one for those of us who love awesome guitar playing.

Irrespective of whether you like or dislike the music, who appreciates technical greatness? The less well known are often the finest.

Jyrki 'Muddy' Manninen is from Finland. Check him out.

Got a specific vid by him to check? Found some vid of him jamming a bit of solo blues but wouldn't call it 'technical'

Sometimes I appreciate technical excellence on guitar, sometimes I don't. Depends on the player.

If you want an amazing technical player that's criminally overlooked check out Scott Mishoe. He put out one album called Omnidirectional in 1995. Check the track 'Sonic Chaos' on YT.

Another guy I randomly discovered is a Russian called Arkadiy Starodoub. Don't think he's released any stuff but the video 'Clips 1-5' on YT is worth checking.

Then again one person's idea of technical greatness might be someone else's idea of emotionless fretwanking so who knows!

Not surprising that he was produced by Mike Varney/Shrapnel Records along with artists like these, all with technical brilliance:

Quote:
(SH-1006) Unsung Guitar Heroes II (feat. Michael Angelo Batio and Marty Friedman)
(SH-1007) Steeler, Steeler (feat. Yngwie Malmsteen)
(SH-1009) Hawaii, One Nation Underground
(SH-1013) Unsung Guitar Heroes IV (feat. Shawn Lane)
(SH-1014) Keel, Lay Down the Law
(SH-1018) Chastain, Mystery of Illusion
(SH-1020) Vicious Rumors, Soldiers of the Night
(SH-1021) Tony MacAlpine, Edge of Insanity
(SH-1023) Racer X, Street Lethal
(SH-1024) Chastain, Ruler of the Wasteland
(SH-1027) Vinnie Moore, Mind's Eye
(SH-1030) Joey Tafolla, Out of the Sun
(SH-1031) Cacophony, Speed Metal Symphony
(SH-1032) Racer X, Second Heat
(SH-1033) Vicious Rumors, Digital Dictator
(SH-1035) Marty Friedman, Dragon's Kiss
(SH-1036) Jason Becker, Perpetual Burn
(SH-1037) Greg Howe, Greg Howe
(SH-1038) Racer X, Extreme Volume Live
(SH-1040) Cacophony, Go Off!
(SH-1042) Richie Kotzen, Richie Kotzen
(SH-1043) Phantom Blue, Phantom Blue
But there's something to be said for artists that know when to keep it simple yet technically and sonic-ally beautiful too. Like Derek Trucks:

Muddy has been with Wishbone Ash for about 5 years, so you could check that out on their Elegant Stealth album. I am very biased having been a serious Wishbone Ash fan for many years and know the band a bit.

I will certainly look at the guys you mentioned, thank you.

I saw him play with Eric Clapton 7-8 years ago. Man can that dude play. He was doing half the soloing and I was gawking at him like crazy. So many licks. I can't say I'm a big fan of him anymore but he deserves props.

Yeah me too. I'm not really into technical blues players to be honest. Always thought it goes against the point of playing blues.
