How does a prog rock nut NOT like jazz?

That's ambitious. This is Trollheart we're talking about, right? If you're going to throw him a jazz saxophonist at least take into consideration his love of cloying melody. Maybe this?

Wait, whats the problem with Jazz? All Jazz? How you cast a net that wide I have no idea. All Jazz? ...it boggles the mind.

Has everybody forgotten who we're talking about?

Lots of replies to get through here. Flattered guys but don't just make the thread about me: anyone else you want to get into any other genre/subgenre? No? Thought not. Guess we'll stick with me then. I'll explain to anyone who wants to what I don't like about the jazz I've heard later but for now, some of your postcards.

Correct. I'm a huge Waits fan. Don't really see too much jazz in his music though: care to point it out? I know he's been linked with the genre but I've heard nearly everything from him and I see little if any jazz. Am I deaf? You'll surely say so. But let me know.

Have never heard any jazz I liked. It leaves me cold. I don't like anything I've heard about it. I'm not saying it's not good but I have never been in any way attracted to it. Too freeform maybe? Dunno. Just never did anything for these ears.

I think they all realise how hard this is going to be. Not to mention that I've a ton of other stuff to listen to before I get to any of this. I promise I will give it all a shot though and let you guys know.

Seriously? I would say jazz is one of the dominant bits of his musical DNA. A lot of his songs are very jazzy or jazz-influenced, especially on the earlier albums. And basically all of the piano ballads he's recorded throughout his career are heavily jazz-influenced. Some of his songs, like this one, simply are straight up jazz tunes:

Even something like this owes a lot to experimental jazz:

OK, I can definitely see that in "Step right up" (which I love by the way) --- that big upright bass, the odd drumming, and I'm sure you're right. Maybe it's --- I don't know, maybe it's instrumental jazz I don't get? But no, I bloody hate Mel Torme too so it can't be that. Without question I'd never say I hate all jazz because what do I know of it, but anything I've heard I have not liked. I may just be destined never to like it or understand it.

To be honest, I had originally intended this year's "Stranger in a strange land" to focus on jazz, but it's such a huge and old genre I really don't know if I'd be taking on too much. Might be a way to face my fears, as it were, perhaps. Or maybe I'll just go with plan B and hide in this dark corner with Marillion blasting on my headphones?
