On top of that I don't really listen to the same music as anyone I know, even my friends who I can talk to it about. I honestly prefer to just keep my music and me separate from the rest of my life, as sad as that is.
Quoted for similarity to my own personal opinion.

^^^^ something I just thought about too, was how hard it makes it when you have a relationship with another music lover, be it a friendship, or otherwise it makes it harder to let go of..In my opinion...

I met a guy once who came in to the store I was working at, in a Neutral Milk Hotel t shirt, we had a moment, between music lovers, and I eventually talked the man out of his t shirt in January.. Save for this isolated incident, I have a hard time letting go of the few friends I have that share the same tastes in music as myself...all 4 of them...

I have only a hand full of friends that I can discuss music with. Mostly musicians, but there is one non-musician friend that I've known for over 25 years that will usually surprise me with something I've never heard.

He's 6'-5", slender build, and he shakes because of nerve damage from being beaten by his father as a child. He's been with me through thick and thin, and will always have my back. We both have very similar tastes, but I usually draw the line when it comes to some of the heavier stuff he likes. We basically compliment each other, and together we make a great team music-wise. He's the only person I've ever made a song in tribute to (other than my Daughter and Dad), but he's such a solid brother, he really deserves it.

Other than that, I'm kind of on my own little musical Island, but I don't mind... I have places like this to go to.

Here's the tune:
Wiggles

It is pretty easy for me to talk about music with people irl because I am not pretentious. I listen to chart music as well as non-chart music and end up recommended artists to people based off of the chart music they like.

So, by that account, all the people that do have a hard time are pretentious? Interesting logic.

Basically. They don't have to be pretentious but they are super picky about what they listen to and heavily frown upon mainstream artists. I am not saying whether that is a good or bad thing but it is a fact.

Obviously any of us can talk about the chart music we may listen to but it's obviously implied that we just don't bother discussing artists the people we are talking to aren't likely to know of.
