Was that Beyonce album any good?
Ya know, that one that got rave reviews and stuff towards the end of last year. That one I only heard about last week. That one with that has some song on it about doing something weird and probably dangerous with a surfboard.
EDIT: I put this in general because I think albums like the one I'm asking about kinda tend to be so obscure and confused in their influences that they end up sidestepping genre. Don't even really qualify as pop, given poor charting of the singles. |
It was okay at best.
|
The album got rave reviews because of the way her team released it not because of the quality of the album.
What I think is funny about the whole thing is, David Bowie released his entire album last year without telling anybody either and he was the FIRST to do it and no one said nothing about that. There was no hype or PR around it. David Bowie did not need a PR tactic to fool people into buying his album because his music speaks for itself. Her latest album is just like the rest of her albums, bland, mediocre and boring. The reason why her team dump her entire album all at once is because none of the singles were strong enough as leading singles. Great marketing ploy.... but crap album. You would think an artist of her status would have grown artistically by now but she is stuck in a bubble. She cares about being a brand more so than growing as an artist which is why I have never considered her an "artist" and more so just "a brand" Her music is fast food. People eat it up once it is out but it is easily forgotten. That Drunk in Love song that plays on the radio is VERY disrespectful towards Tina Turner. Its sad that children listen to it and think it is "cool" for a man to hit on a woman. :/ Not only that it is just an awful song. Female artists like Janelle Monae, Kelis, etc are more talented and more interesting. |
David Bowie was absolutely not the first to do such a thing.

But he did not get the respect and props Beyonce did for doing it. He didn't leak prior singles like Beyonce did to test the success of the singles. When those two singles her team leaked over the summer received negative feedback, Her team came up with the idea to copy David Bowie and release everything all at once with flashy videos. The PR tactic was you had to buy the album before you actually listened to it lol He released everything all at once without leaking anything. |
Bowie has always been a trend setter..
But i can't believe you are comparing Bowie with Beyonce, ofc it worked for Bowie, it's f*ckin Bowie! he and Beyonce are not artist of the same caliber, I don't think the comparison between the 2 is fair. |
Quote:
You may not like Beyonce because of whatever personal issues you have with her but the album was worth all the reviews that it did get. I'm slightly offended that you put Kelis on the same level as Janelle Monae. You should be ashamed of that. People wouldn't have spent their money on an album that was as **** as you are pretending it is. She got around 600,000 dollars worth of digital sales in three days. XO, Pretty Hurts, Drunk In Love, Partition and Flawless are all single worthy tracks. Only three out of the five I have named have been singles so far but I'm sure she'll probably make the track with Drake be a single even though it's not the best song imo. You should definitely give it a try and see how you feel about it. She mixes a lot of different sub genres on the album. Some retro soul, alternative R&B, synth pop, it is a bit all over. |
no. its not good at all. Not even drunk in love was good

Where Are We Now? was released in December 2012 & The Stars (Are Out Tonight) was released in Feburary 2013 as singles before The Next Day was released in March 2013. |

That is not the reason why I brought him up. I was making a point. I know David Bowie is a trendsetter but tell the media that because as far as they know Beyonce was the first to drop her album without telling anyone. Bowie was the first to release his album online without telling anyone. I would NEVER compare artistically an artist like Bowie to Beyonce. I brought up Bowie because he was the first last year to drop his album online without telling anybody despite what the media said about Beyonce being the first. He did not get nearly as much acclaim and credit as Beyonce when he did it and he did it before her. |
Quote:

Bowie gets far more critical acclaim than Beyoncé anyway so it's kind of pointless.
Which album did you prefer RT? |

Beyonce's team did leak two singles last summer. She leaked Bow Down B%$^& and it received negative reviews. She renamed it "Flawless" on her new album because of the negative feedback she received from the original title of the song. This was all over the news, couldn't miss it. They were playing the song on the radio to. They also leaked Grown Woman which also appeared in her Pepsi Ad commercial. She also showcased the song on her tour. They purposely leaked those songs to see the public reaction. When her team realized those singles were not strong to stand alone by themselves they copied David Bowies idea. Bowie dropped his album without any promotion and without telling anybody. He did not leak any of his songs before he did that. |

You honestly believe all music reviews are strictly based on the music and NOTHING else? Quote:
I just think she is outrageously overrated and makes bland music. Quote:
I listened to the entire album and the album is not a 9/10 or 5/5 stars like all the critics were giving that album. Rihanna and Lady Gaga make the same type of music and have the same type of lyrics but they get poor reviews while they gave that Beyonce album 5/5 stars for the same music they make? They gave her those ratings because it was alot of hype around the way she released it not because it was such a innovative album. Quote:
Kelis has a great discography and her new album is fire. She does a better Lady Gaga than Lady Gaga does herself. You obviously have not listened to her entire discography or watched her videos. Quote:
Her team dropped that album with flashy videos attached to the songs during Christmas time. She did it after Lady Gaga released her album, after Justin released his album, after Katy Perry released her album and so forth. Her team dropped the album without telling anybody which garnered hype around her release. Those initial sales were because of the way she dropped it. Not to mention you had to buy the album before actually listening to the songs. Whoever brought the album were bamboozled by a PR tactic. I know some people who got it that regret getting it because they said she was trying to hard and the songs sucked. No one doesn't talk about that album and the sells have dropped. Who still talks about that album or the songs? It has just been what 3 1/2 months since its released and it has already been old news. Quote:

Okay so I checked and Urban is right.
David Bowie did release those two songs as digital singles before releasing his digital album. HOWEVER, I still stand by my opinion. David Bowie was the first to drop his digital album with ZERO commercial promotion or prior promotion. David Bowie did not have ANY prior promotion before releasing those singles unlike Beyonce who had the Super Bowl, Pepsi Ad commercial, Inauguration singing showcase before she dropped her album. It had been over decade since David Bowie released an album. David Bowie released those singles as music videos and did not tell anyone. He also did not leak those singles to test the waters. He just went out and released those songs out of no where unlike Beyonce's team who tested the strength of her songs by leaking them before coming up with that PR tactic to release the album all at once with music videos. David Bowie is the KANG and the first to do it. That is my opinion and I am sticking to it! lol He deserved more props for doing it because he did not have all that commercial saturated exposure like Beyonce did and his album still was successful. He was the first to do it |

Why is it that David Bowie's sales barely made 100k using the same tactic? Since you want to chalk it up to only the way it was distributed and nothing else. Quote:

Why is it okay for Beyonce to act like a slut in her videos but Miley Cyrus , Lady Gaga and Rihanna get bashed for it? Why is it okay for Beyonce to Make fun of Tina Turner's abusive marriage to Ike Turner Why is it okay for Beyonce to Make a song called Bow Down B#$%hes But Rihanna and Lady Gaga are constantly dragged by the media and their distractions when they make similar songs and do similar things in their videos? I am not a fan of any of them but I do notice that there is a unfair double standard when it comes to Beyonce. Just because I am not a fan of theres does not mean I can not acknowledge that some of their criticism is unfair when there are other artists that do the same thing that dont get criticized. Quote:
Why is it so impossible for you to consider that the hype generated by the way she released the album also played a role in how the critics rated it? You are not being objective in this discussion because you are not taking into consideration that SOME critics rate songs and albums NOT just on the quality of the material. Quote:
Check out this cool song from her upcoming album. I think this song is better than anything Beyonce has ever released. Highly doubt that. Quote:
Quote:
Her team is not stupid. I don't even like JT but he still sold way more than she did and didn't have to do a silly PR tactic to get quick sells. Quote:
I didn't mention sells not one time when I brought up David Bowie. David Bowie received acclaim for the QUALITY of his music, not for the sells. People were surprised because he had not released an album in 10 years. This man did not have the kind of commercial promotion Beyonce had. She had a tour, the Superbowl, the inauguration, etc AND then she dropped her album. Bowie did not have that... He just dropped it with NO promotion. Quote:

It is nothing wrong with being proud of your body but I find issue with a woman who calls them self a role model for young girls but then shows their ass in videos and acts like a slut knowing that most of her fans are young underage impressionable girls. You cant have it both ways. You cant say you care about children and then turn around and act like that in your videos. You cant be the slut AND the girl next door. I just think she does and says things for money doesn't really care about those young girls. Janelle Monae is a better role model. |
Yes it is very surprising that David bowie, the insanely commercially popular artist for decades, can release an album that is popular. What a trendsetter this guy, whos net worth is in the hundreds of millions, is for laying low and not even putting any song from his new album into a single commercial!! (until his album dropped but c'mon that's not the same right) Everyone should take note on how this poor labyrinth star does music business the right way. Not like that scumbag Beyoncé. Just look at how many commercials she is in! shameful if you ask me.
|
The only point I was making by bringing David Bowie in this discussion was to show that he was the FIRST last year to release a digital album without commercial promotion and without releasing an official release date.
I just think it is funny how he did not receive credit or acclaim for the way he released it but Beyonce gets credited as being the first when she technically is not. |

I don't think this has anything to do with fans per se. I think this has to do with the critics and the media. Regardless whether David Bowie is more or less relevant than Beyonce, he was the first to release a digital album without promotion. He deserves that credit. |
I think it had more to do with him being nearly 70 years old and having heart surgery rather than being any artistic statement.

I am not bashing her. I am giving constructive criticism and I have legitimate reasons for my opinion. You need to stop saying someone is bashing or someone is a hater just because they give constructive criticism. I could see if there was no rational to my argument but there is so I am not sure why you keep insisting that I am bashing her when I am not. Also, it does not matter what I think, I am talking about what the media says and projects and she does not nearly get as much criticism as the others. Quote:
I am not "bashing" her. I am giving constructive criticism that I think is definitly warranted. Those lyrics were VERY disrespectful and its ashame how the is constantly played like that those lyrics are okay and mean nothing. I have an issue with someone who thinks it is okay to make fun of an abusive relationship and if you want to say I am bashing her or calling me a hater for it... then fine, I dont care. That is unacceptable. If Miley, Rihanna or Lady Gaga had made lyrics like that they would have gotten dragged through the mud by the media. Quote:
No she does not. Even when she finally got some criticism for her lip singing last year, everyone was still supporting her and making excuses for her. I remember J Lo even insisted that Whitney lip singed so why couldn't Beyonce. If Michael Jackson did not get a passed If Madonna did not get a passed If Janet Jackson did not get passed If Whitney Houston did not get a passed If Britney Spears did not get a passed Why should Beyonce get a passed for lip singing? People make alot of excuses for her and the media seems to fawn over her regardless if her music is crap or not. She is a media darling. Quote:
Miley Cyrus does the same thing but they drag her all the time but they don't say anything about Beyonce or when she does it. They say she is a good role model for young girls or make excuses by saying she represents "feminism" I have a problem with that because showing your ass is not "feminism" and I don't see how singing about how it is okay to let a man hit you is being a good role model for young girls. Quote:
They were saying that her album was the best album released last year and I am sorry that is B.S. They only said that because of how she released it. Now of course I am not saying this is the case for ALL critics but some critics most definitly do go by hype, hell some even based their ratings on whether they like or dislike the artist personally and ignore the quality of their craft all together i.e. Michael Jackson. It is not right and it is not fair which is why it is silly to go by what critics think or believe. I just thought all the critics reviews on her album were laughable while other albums that were actually good quality got poor reviews. Quote:
Quote:
I don't understand this. How can you listen to 4-5 songs and make a argument that you do not like her music or do not care for her? Millionaire with Andre 3000 is actually a really good song. If you do not care for her that is okay but don't say you have listened to her music when you have not. Quote:

I am not slut shamming anybody. It is not "okay" for someone who claims they care about the youth and young girls to show their ass in their videos and on stage BUT then turn around and call themselves a role model. I don't take someone like that seriously. You can't have it both ways. |

Kelis is an eclectic artist. All her songs do not sound the same. She experiments with alot of different genres. If that is his opinions thats fine.... but listening to five songs from various different albums is not a good judgement of her entire discography. Quote:
Huh? This makes no sense. Can you clarify what you mean by this? He made a bold statement about her as an artist and about her entire discography. Someone who has only listened to 5 songs out of her entire discography should not make bold statements such as that when they have not listened to all of the artists music, period. Quote:
Kelis is not a mainstream artist. She only has two mainstream hits and that is Milkshake and Bossy. I am not asking him to mention unknown songs. He did not even mention albums or an album he listened to. All her albums sound completely different. Quote:

DJ said that Beyonce's album initial album sells would have still been the same even if JT, Katy and so forth released there album when she did hers. I disagree with that because there is past evidence that shows that she does not sell well when other artists drop there album around the same time she does hers. For example, in 2011 when Adele released her "21" album she out sold everyone INCLUDING Beyonce. In fact Adele's 21 album went diamond! Beyonce does not have a diamond album and Adeles 21 album is still selling till this day Beyonces sales figures that were recently presented by Sound Scan shows that combining all 5 of her albums she has a total of 15 million albums sold. I think this is a very very small number of sells for someone of her status. There are artists that sell 15 million off of one album alone. Her initial sells for her latest album was due to the way she released it not because it was such a great great album with great great music. Her sells have died down though for that album. She is not an artist that sells a lot in terms of albums. She is more so a "singles" artist similar to Rihanna but Rihanna sells more singles. Quote:
A review is not going to say..." This is the best album of 2013 because of the way she released it" but I know that is why she got all those good reviews because the album sucks quality wise. When I have some time I will find some reviews. |

You are doing the same thing that you do in arguments about artists not getting enough credit. You bring up the media and it's always based off of your perspective of what the media says. There is no way in hell that you can actually prove anything. You can snatch up a few articles here and there if you want to but there is no way to prove what the overall media says because it's all different sources. You choose to not see all the hate and being dragged through the mud that she gets and make your opinion based off of that when it's not really the case. Quote:

Do you also have a problem with her singing about female empowerment? You keep denying that you are slut shaming but that's exactly what you are doing. I think she acts like a slut on stage and in her videos and I think she purposely capitalizes off of it. Side Note: I am not calling HER a slut specifically (because I do not know her personally) but yes she does act like that on stage and in her music videos. I think that is all she obviously wants to be seen as: "sex symbol" and that is fine I just wish she would present that in a more creative way. Any descent person with self- respect would not display their ass like that in a video or pose half naked in their video just for a quick buck. You can still sell sexuality without doing that and even if you are I just think it should be at least more artistic. For instance, Madonna did the same thing in the 90s but it was artistic and creative. It told a story and had a overall message. I don't see anything wrong selling sexuality but as long as it is done in a creative and artistic way. With Beyonce, its the same old sex kitten act but its not done in a creative or artistic way. It does not tell a story or has deeper meaning behind it. She is suppose to be an artist. She is a singer and even if she wanted to sell sex in all her music I think it should have some artistic merit behind it. Not just her laying half naked on the floor singing "I want to be the kinda girl you like" in every single video. Because to me what that shows is, she is simply capitalizing off a easy money making market (the sex market) in order to compensate for her bland music. Paritian is not about sexual empowerment. I am tired of people making her silly songs deeper than what they are. Are Rihanna sexual songs empowerment as well? How about Miley's? Because I am tired of this double standard with Beyonce. I think the meaning in the song is a negative message especially for young girls and young women. It teaches girls that you have to be submissive to men and that "you should be the kinda girl they like" Really Beyonce? That is all you want to be? I just personally feel like that sends a bad message to this generation especially the females that listen to this crap and think that is what they should be. I especially take that personally since I am apart of this generation Young women think they should show their ass and be the kinda woman MEN want them to be in order to be valued because of silly corporate songs like this not realizing these singers do not give a damn about them and just care about money. ONCE AGAIN, Janelle Monae is a better role model and overall better artist. It is a shame how in order to be successful as a pop female singer you have to show your ass and sell your soul. I am glad that there are some with dignity and self-respect. |
just wanna add i do agree with part of what realtalk has said despite not readin much of this thread. beyonce has always had a weird double standard. act like a sex kitten on stage but is revered for it and is 'empowering' and stuff... lol @ slut shaming

Once again, Beyonce had the Superbowl for promotion Beyonce had a world wide tour Beyonce had the pepsi commercials Beyonce singed at the inauguration So she had more commercial promotion than Bowie so naturally she initially would sell more but it does not change that he was the first. I think his sells are more impressive being he had NO promotion AT ALL. |
