How Much Of A Music Snob Are You (Quiz)

Well, well... another quiz. I know Carpe loves em so what the heck.

My results:

Quote:

You checked off 30 out of 100 on this list!

You’re a major music nerd, and most people in your life consider you to be an expert. You’re very committed, but there’s some lines you don’t cross.

Frownland 04-15-2014 12:44 PM

Pretest: I will probably get a pretty high score because I'm a pretentious douche about my music.

9/100.

Seven of those I'm pretty sure had to do with demanding only the highest quality ripping setting imaginable. Lossless or gtfo.

I can deal with that. I'm a nerd but I have sex too. That's a lie, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. Also a lie.

When it said contributed to a zine I ticked yes, even though it was a Doctor Who zine.
I think having to travel all the way to London for gigs or a decent record store was a huge factor in why it was this high.

Jesus Christ. If you only merit a 57, then how the hell do you get into the nineties? Do I have to be the guy who shot John Lennon or something?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-15-2014 01:45 PM

Most of the ones I didn't tick off were about live gigs because I don't get to many plus I'm not a vinyl junkie either.

Urban's got me beat by a smidge. I blame the expensive vinyl purchasing and music journalism questions for bringing me down.

Music is unquestionably the main focus of your life, and you spend a huge amount of time and money on your obsessions. A lot of people are in awe of you.

I got 47, because I'm a pretentious *******.
Some of the questions pissed me off, a lot of them are based around being inauthentic (lied about liking an artist, stopped liking an artist after they got popular) which aren't so much snobby as just fake.

It's not about being "fake" it's about bands selling out, which is basically changing their sound so they can appeal to a wider audience in other words becoming "popular." If a fan likes a particular sound and the band moves away from that sound and in another direction, I don't why the fan is suppose to be "fake" because he or she doesn't like the new material. You make it seem like if you declare yourself a fan you have to like everything an artist does, even if they the band starts producing cheese, and if you don't then you are "fake." Can't fans have a mind of their own and decide what like what they like about a band instead of the band/producer/record company saying "here like this." Do people without a lemming mentality "piss you off?"

Lisnaholic 04-16-2014 07:39 PM

I got a score of 24, which I`m pretty happy about. The only questions that I fudged were the ones that started "Insisted..", which I ticked even though said or suggested would`ve been closer to the truth.

Didn`t linger long on the question about how many grams a vinyl recording weighs - does anyone here consider a thing like that?

Yes, but it's not really a deal breaker for me or even something that I look for. It's more of a "cool a 180g pressing of The VU & Nico" situation. The heavier records aren't as prone to warping and they tend not to die as fast (I've only played a couple of records to death, and they were the standard 125g. My 180gs are unscathed), but that's the only upside really.

Mondo Bungle 04-16-2014 08:37 PM

Ah! I didn`t realise that it was an issue of how long an album would last. Now that I think about it, I remember once being surprised by an album that was noticably lighter than normal and seriously flexible - didn`t like the feel of it very much!

I don't know any journalist. I rather find stuff out on my own. I think of music journalist as either sitting on their high horse insulting good musician about their music, which is ironic because they [journalist] can't play a lick. Or just write drivel - positive reviews about crap bands that kinda comes off like they are pushing a defective product.

edit: I mean the professional music journalist

Charlemagne 04-16-2014 10:48 PM

37 out of 100. Interesting, I would have thought higher, but I didn't check a lot of the "shaming" ones because I feel that's more douche than snob. (Maybe they are the same thing, but I don't shame people a lot)

I don't think that's the same thing. The question doesn't say 'have you stopped liking a band because of their new material' it said specifically just because more people started liking them.

I know what the question is. I check no for that, that's something I don't recall doing. I am usually on the other end where I might like a band because of a particular song I they've done (e.g. Yellow by Coldplay) and see them later on hated for being popular or for the music they make later on in their career.

You came to the conclusion the people who stop liking a band more people started liking them are "fake."Whether you think I am right or wrong, I didn't see it that way. I just try to provide a reasonable explanation why they are not fake. You are free to draw any conclusion you like, just as people are free to stop liking a band whenever and for whatever reason they like.

Interesting quiz. I think it's accurate. My result:

"You checked off 27 out of 100 on this list!

Actually I haven't been to many shows or traveled long distance for music (events). If I have the money for these things, I would do of course.
Also I don't think I have phases, since I listen to music cross-over and the ex-relation to music will probably be never given. Fun quiz at any rate.

GuD 04-20-2014 07:07 PM

I got 17.

Mainly checked the ones in regards to purchases.

Yes, I've bought obscure tapes and vinyls. How does that make me a snob!?

Meh.

Engine 04-20-2014 07:16 PM

^You use the word "vinyls" so clearly are not a music snob.

edit: holy damn I got 61 and I'm not even snobby, just particular and thorough
