The Great Biweekly Artists of Musicbanter Song Off Act II

This is an old thread idea that sort of faded to nothingness a while back. The game: we decide on a theme and everybody who wants in submits a track that they made to fit the theme. After all tracks are submitted, we vote on which track is the best (non-participants can also vote) and the winner will get...nothing! The tracks can be as long as you like but try to keep it shorter than ten minutes.

You can post your tracks in a soundcloud or YouTube fashion, and I'll update this post with the submissions and winners. We'll alternate on who chooses the theme between the dedicated players.

But before I decide the first theme, I'd like to know, do I have any takers?

We are now voting on Round 3

Plankton 06-03-2014 11:13 AM

I do this all the time at a guitar oriented forum, and the winners usually aren't who's technically brilliant, but song structure quality plays a big role. It does help to have a bit of production knowledge too. It would be interesting to see how things go around here.

I'm down

hate paper doll 06-03-2014 03:27 PM

I have zero musical ability or talent, but I'd love to hear everyone's stuff and would definitely vote.

Jade_City 06-03-2014 03:34 PM

Might as well see how it turns out, I can't play any instrument tho. I'd love to hear the tracks from people anyway :hphones:

javerend 06-03-2014 04:48 PM

I'd be in!

Carpe Mortem 06-03-2014 04:58 PM

I was actually high when I read that and didn't see the part about 'create your own'.... but what the hell maybe I'll give something acappella a go finally. I have been wanting to. All my submissions will be entirely vocal because **** sitting through another FL tutorial series and I play no instruments.

Moss 06-03-2014 05:56 PM

Im in! I think.

Plankton 06-05-2014 11:09 AM

Ba-Bump bump bump
Ba-Bump bump bump

Hoooo-woooooooooooohhhhhh Oooh Oooh Oooh Oooh...

Come on and dance, come on and da-ance
We may not get another chance

Janszoon 06-05-2014 12:58 PM

Not sure if I have time unfortunately, but if it turns out I do, I'm in.

Frownland 06-05-2014 09:00 PM

Alright, looks like we have enough involved to get her going.

Our first theme will be "hollow" and you will have until Friday June 20, 2014 AD Earth Time. Just submit your track in this thread when you think it's ready. I'll decide the ordering of who picks the future themes based off of who participates in this first round. Voting will start on the 21 and that's when the new theme will be announced as well.

Have fun!

Plankton 06-06-2014 08:13 AM

On your mark... get set... jam!

I'd suggest making a new thread with a poll, and link to the tunes when all submissions are in. Maybe put it in the Song Writing, Lyrics and Poetry category. Kind of like this:

Guitar Chaos

Just a thought.

Plankton 06-09-2014 09:45 AM

Has anyone made any progress on their tune? Just wondering.

Here's some tunes in the key of "Hollow" for inspiration:

So far I'm thinking about doing solo acoustic guitar with a new tuning I developed (D-Ab-D-D-Ab-D). Haven't recorded anything yet because I want to jump into that when I'm playing on it and it feels right. I may end up adding in a few other elements but that's where I'm at so far.

I recorded something last night. I had a few beers in me so I'm listening back right now... ugh. blech.

Screw it, I'm leaving it. I'm trying to think of something to use for the theme.

For those having trouble thinking something up, playing on hollow instruments only would technically fit the theme...

I might just use a ton of reverb. Makes things 'sound' hollow.

Carpe Mortem 06-10-2014 09:16 AM

I haven't had any privacy to record anything for a rough draft, hopefully later today.

Plankton 06-11-2014 07:47 AM

Finished mine up last night. You want I should post it up now, or wait?

Frownland 06-11-2014 10:45 AM

You can post your track in this thread whenever you feel it's ready. I'll be posting mine soon as well.

Plankton 06-11-2014 10:52 AM

:yeah:

Frownland 06-11-2014 11:31 AM

And here it is!

Recorded at 2 AM in a drainage pipe.

Plankton 06-11-2014 12:06 PM

I know your style, and as I'm not really into that type of free form, I can appreciate it. Nicely done though. 2am in a drainage pipe? So many questions come to mind.

What did you use to record?
What instruments are those?
Were you alone?
Where is said drainage pipe (ie on your property, across the street, etc.)?

This tune shows your dedication to your craft, and the gumption to embrace it. My hats off.

Normally for outdoor recordings I record on a handheld recording device, but unfortunately the USB part of the device isn't working anymore so I can't put the material on my computer anymore. So I shot a video on my iPhone. I placed it at the end of the pipe and played in the centre to get the full echo effect.

It's an acoustic guitar tuned to D-Ab-D-D-Ab-D (a few cents off from bending and all that when I was practicing which adds a creepier element to it.)

Were you alone?
Yes, quite.

The drainage pipe is a couple of miles from my place, underneath a closed road. You have to walk 60 feet or so through brush to find it.

Thanks man! Can't wait to hear your track and the other tracks people submit.

Awesome! :)

A reminder to all that the deadline is on Friday the 20th.

Carpe Mortem 06-16-2014 10:05 PM

Great submissions here, on the real! I won't be participating unfortunately... workin 12 hour days now so not much free time at all. Will gladly vote though.

Janszoon 06-17-2014 07:11 AM

Great tracks guys!

Frownland: I'm amazed to hear that this is just you with a guitar, it sounds like a whole group of people performing. And the circumstances under which you recorded it were awesome. I loved the mood of it, I felt like I was in some vast hallway in an ancient alien temple listening to it. Very cool stuff!

Plankton: Your song had such a great cinematic feel. While I was listening I could just imagine the final shot in some movie—the camera pulling back to reveal a wide open landscape, the credits beginning to roll. I really liked how you handled the bass here and the terrific peaks and valleys dynamic you had going on with the song structure. Out of curiosity, how was this recorded?

And here's mine: Mister Zoon—"The Hollow Earth"

For anyone who missed it, I also have comments on the other two tracks as well as my own submission on the previous page.

PRS SE Custom 22 to Line 6 HD500 (Mesa Boogie amp style modeler) to M-Audio interface to Audacity. I did the rhythm track when I was a bit buzzed, and then waited until the next day to add the lead and Bass. I saturated the rhythm track with some Gverb (reverb in Audacity), and threw some extra Delay on the leads to give them a hollow sound. Bass and drums were kept dry and straight up the middle. The rhythm guitars were widened a bit, as was the lead (just a touch).

Nice use of a sequencer here, and I love the quirky stuff coming in later. Very Tomita-ish sounding, and like Janz mentioned, it does have that 70's futuristic quality to it. Another contender!

So was that you playing an acoustic drum kit? If so, kudos on the impressive miking job!

YorkeDaddy 06-18-2014 08:47 AM

Thanks fellas. There's been some great stuff posted in this thread and we all have different styles so it's really cool

Ooops, I didn't mention it was a random track I grabbed from YouTube. I do have Hydrogen, but I'm usually too lazy to put anything together with it.

Here it is.

Also, I used my Jaguar Bass through a dry line through my HD500 to the same input on the M-Audio. Thats it, unless anyone wants to know the guitar and amp sim settings for the guits. Got those too.

Frownland 06-20-2014 01:08 PM

Great to see so many submissions! I was fearing it would end up to be just me and Plank.

To those who haven't put up a submission, you have until midnight tonight (PST) to submit your tracks until voting officially starts.

gunnels 06-20-2014 01:12 PM

Mm! I never noticed this thread before. I think once my new toys come in I might participate eventually.

Frownland 06-21-2014 10:28 AM

You can now submit your votes on which track you liked best. It's not required but a couple of sentences on why you picked the track you did would be good. Here are the submissions:

Plankton:

Frownland:

Janzsoon: https://soundcloud.com/mister-zoon/the-hollow-earth

YorkDaddy: https://soundcloud.com/daydream-soci...-a-hollow-mind

We'll trade off on who gets to select the next theme based off of who submitted tracks first. So...
1. Frownland
2. Plankton
3. Janzsoon
4. YorkeDaddy

Since I went first, Plankton gets to decide on the next theme.
