Good point neardeath!! I agree that he was shy and awkward, and didn't fit the rock star image. He was a lot younger however. But even Keith was in awe of his playing!! You make a good point though.

Keith Richards and Pete Townshend are two of the greatest rock R&B rhythm guitarist of all time (Without even considering their abilities at lead guitar).
Keith Richards had more funk in his playing than Mick Taylor ever had.

I prefer the Rolling Stones with Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. These guys are nothing less than dynamite when they play together.

The same can be said about Brian Jones as well, he's way over romanticized and overrated in my opinion.

Mick Taylor doesn't play on this song. Keith is doing all the guitars – (that's why it's the best Stones song)

I mean he hadn't even played that much guitar on Stones studio albums.
He might have been a great natural, talented musician, but what I read around the internet or the papers...well, it's just absurdly biased because o his untimely death. But to put it in Keith's words (paraphrased, I have the interview in French):

To be honest about Brian: now that he's dead I could/should say `Brian was a fantastic musician`. But that's just not true. Brian wasn't a grand musician. He had some talent for some things, but that's just like any other guy in the band.
There was a certain alchemy for a moment there, but that just didn't last for very long (...) At the end what he was, was really a handicap – mostly because of all the pression we had to put up with as a popular band.

Mick Taylor has the skill, the technique. But he doesn't really have a "style". If you'd listen to some random recording, you can't be sure what guitar is being played by Taylor (because he's just good technically – he has the chops), but you always know if it's Keith that's playing.

Being a moderately good, but unmistakable musician > Being a competent and virtuoso-like musician

There were some gems in the RW era, but nothing that can seriously compete with what the Stones were doing 1969 – 1975

How about the Stones 1963-1968? Some of Richards' best riffs are from the early Stones period in particular. So what if they were mostly covers.

Brian Jones wasn't necessarily a great musician but somehow he was a great catalyst for their late-60s psychedelic experimentation. His contributions to Aftermath and Their Satanic Majesties Request helped write some very important chapters in rock history, added a distinct edge to those records.

And the ambiguity of his gender presentation alone can account for the mythical aura. Before Bowie, the second biggest band on the planet had this weird guy whose fantasy was to look like Françoise Hardy. In rock mythology, this is no less important than being really good at the guitar.

That’s an entirely different subject.
I wasn’t downplaying the Jones era - I love it very much, and I love Jones’ contributions to the songs.

Still I think/feel that the Stones 1968-1975 were at their peak (yeah, i know, what an original opinion). That this was the moment when they went from a „band looking for it’s sound”, to a „band that had matured and knows where they’re going”

I'll admit my two favorite Stones albums are Let It Bleed, the album in which they had fired Jones and Taylor is introduced, and Beggar's Banquet, when Jones is in obvious decline. Still, I find myself playing songs like Money and Off the Hook in my head. The Stones throughout we're always so great with hooks from Satisfaction to Gimme Shelter to Brown Sugar, you get the idea.
