Van Halen a great start with a awesome singer then they decided to give Sammy the job which to me made them more middle of the road and allowed for a wider audience. Then there was the hick up with Gary Cherone.......Back to David Lee Roth with Wolf Gang on bass. The good, bad and ugly of Van Halen...........

These guys started out as Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show, sounding like this...

Dr Hook & The Medicine Show - "Penicillin Penny" - YouTube

Then they shortened their name to Dr. Hook, and morphed into this...

Dr Hook - "Sharing The Night Together" - YouTube

I liked them much better before than after.

This may not be counted due to the "New" tag in the change, but it's worth a mention due to having the same singer...

The Animals -
The Mod 60's Model built tough!

You already know that part of the story.

The "New" Animals -
Eric changed the recipe with new members and new clothes, and while it was not as disastrous as the New Coke as some might say (especially those who are still living in 1966), a bit of the quality slipped, especially in the lyric department as well as the image. For some reason, Eric's style never really fitted the peace and love stuff that was going on. Still, it was a nice try and not without a few good songs ("Sky Pilot"), a few ambitious songs, and some fine musicianship.

Still, despite the good things that started off alright, the first song on Winds of Change did not help matters after that moment.

Then you had a seriously hit and miss collection of songs that sometimes were good, but usually pandered to the "Love Crowd" sounding as if it were a move to stay alive in the marketplace (personal opinion, it was).

Still, despite the change to flower power, some of the edge was still there, although by the time future Police Man Andy Summers joined, they were moving more towards covers (I wonder if Love Is was a Contractual Obligation album...).

They were at their best live, of course...

Then Eric decided to spill some wine and move on.

Ulver - Hymn II - Of Wolf and the Devil - YouTube

To

Ulver - Perdition City - YouTube

To

Ulver- Today - YouTube

They've also done ambient works, classical, folk, and on and on. I don't think theres another band that has gone through so many completely different shifts in sound
