I like Tom Petty. I don't really like Boards of Canada but I do like a lot of IDM. For me, both have have a place among music I enjoy.

An incredibly well thought out & substantiated argument. I especially like how inventive & original are set up as some sort of absolute attributes; as any casual music fan knows, not only is it totally possible to argue which artist is more original (while referencing only fact & not opinion), it's very easy.

For instance, Boards of Canada > any dude with an electric guitar from the seventies

It's like, duh.

I took my daughter to Deadmau5, Tommy Lee, and 2 or 3 other boring ass EDM bands. Every single band had a guy jumping up and down, punching his fist in the air, and occasionally "displaying his talent" by hitting a button on his Apple computer. Tom Petty is right.
