Good albums so far...and some unexpected ones.

Quick question...can we veto albums? I'm honestly not sure if we need the Deadsy album on our list...

We should HAVE IT 8 vetos from 8 different people or maybe lower it to 4 if we don't have enough jackasses here lol

89. The Rolling Stones - Between the Buttons (1967)

Yet another album with a song that has a connection with a John Hughes movie, coincidences? Not intended, I really didn't think of it at the time when I decided to nominate this album. It's just that I noticed there were no Beatles, Stones or Kinks's albums in the list as of yet and I thought I would remedy that with one of my all time favorite 60s albums from my favorite band. The John Hughes connection was an after-thought.

I'm only guessing John Hughes chose to name the girl whom the main character pines over after a Stones tune, maybe to have a ready-made song about one of his characters in the movie. If you watch the movie however the song was covered by The March Violets so you won't hear the original Stones version. The John Hughes connection aside...

The Stones could had been easily named the album "Between the Beats" cause they play in the pocket. The band plays loose and yet like they've just learn their instruments. The album has a neat lo-fi sound. I like the raw energy some of the songs have. They sound like they are about to fall apart, give up and stop playing the song but somehow pull through. Kinda like Jack White but 30-something years prior.

90. Roxy Music - Avalon (1980)

As I'm preparing to listen to this album for a second time tonight, I'm more inspired than ever to share why Avalon is a necessary listen for anyone who loves to feel music.

Avalon is a different flavor than Roxy Music's previous albums, though the permanence of their elegance is evident. There are no dramatic breaks between songs, only soft passages and smooth segues. Every song has its own personality, while stitched together like the chapters of your favorite novel. Bryan Ferry's vocals are at their most ethereally seductive throughout this soothing experience.

I've provided links to each song on this album. The only downside to this is that you won't be able to experience the seamless transitions you'd hear on the LP. (Especially the one between "India" and "While My Heart is Still Beating". Timeless beauty.

Spoiler for Full album (track by track):
Spoiler for More Than This:

Spoiler for The Space Between:

Spoiler for Avalon:

Spoiler for India (Instrumental):

Spoiler for While My Heart is Still Beating:

Spoiler for The Main Thing:

Spoiler for Take a Chance With Me:

Spoiler for To Turn You On:

Spoiler for True to Life:

Spoiler for Tara (Instrumental):

Personal favorites from Avalon:

The Space Between
While My Heart is Still Beating
The Main Thing
To Turn You On

I would certainly recommend Avalon to first-time listeners of Roxy Music (or to listeners who are familiar with the glam age of the group - but weren't very impressed with what they heard) or to anyone who just wants to sit and chill. It's been in my top 5 for many years now - I'd go so far as to say it's my favorite Roxy Music album.

I personally am not going to put albums that are already on the other 1001 list.

91. My Morning Jacket - Z

Aside from a couple disappointing successors, Z solidifies My Morning Jacket as one of the best jam bands to come out in our generation, or at least mine. Some tracks create a very atmospheric wash of keyboards, while others suck you into their guitar solos. A very great balance of obscurity and accessibility.

Are you congratulating me for choosing an album that didn't make the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list? If not you had 14 perfectly good chances to make that same announcement when other members were selecting albums found on 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. I was wondering why did you wait for me to post an album that wasn't mentioned in the list to say it?

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die
Published in 2005 by Cassell Illustrated.
  1. Alice in Chains – Dirt
  2. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – Trout Mask Replica
  3. Cocteau Twins – Heaven or Las Vegas
  4. Green Day – Dookie
  5. Jesus & Mary Chain – Psychocandy
  6. Minor Threat – Out of Step (included in Complete Discography)
  7. My Bloody Valentine – Loveless
  8. Nico – Chelsea Girl
  9. Nirvana – In Utero
  10. Pearl Jam – Ten
  11. Prodigy – Fat of the Land
  12. REM – Murmur
  13. Soundgarden – Superunknown
  14. War – World is a Ghetto

Is the list for the members of MusicBanter or is it a list against all prior lists by excluding albums & artist who make it into other lists? I thought it was cool that I saw Minor Threat and War mentioned. I didn't care if they made our list and another published list.

I've read what duga & norg had to say. I don't think we have to worry about bumping off, trimming or excluding albums until we reach 1,001 albums. And if we ever do exceed 1,001 albums, instead of deleting albums off the list, we should split it onto two 1.) albums that MB members agree should be on Cassell Pub. 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die and 2.) MusicBanter's Addendum to the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, which would be albums that are not found on 1001 AYMHBYD.
edit: So to leave room for more albums and to avoid having someone album taken off the list. But then again they are already numbered and accounted for. idk

I honestly thought Between the Buttons was on the original list and it's criminal that it isn't. I wasn't keeping track of the other albums you listed but I thought many were on the original list. I was referring to the comment that you didn't see many Stones, Beatles or Kinks on the list and I thought for me personally I haven't put many of these bands up because they were covered in the original list. Kudos to you for putting up a great album by the Stones that was not on the original.

I agree, just leave them on, and if we exceed 1001, make an addendum.
