Ahhh you guys seem to have left out the most heartwarming anthem of them all, which is, of course, the Turkish one.

I'm still working on learning the words, since it's required to become a citizen. I mean, they make you recite it (some rumors suggest you actually have to sing it) during your citizenship application interview. Niiiice.

We don't actually have one, but if we did it'd be Jerusalem and that would be the best as it's a great song on it's own.

I've always liked Portugal's as well.

It's funny, because the first two words are "unbreakable union".:)

Not saying it's necessarily the best (although it was written by Joseph Haidn), but it's definitely my favorite. My military school's anthem actually used the music to this song, just with changed lyrics. Once I found this out I memorized the German version and would sing it at school assemblies. I can actually still remember and sing the first verse, and part of the second.

Don't sing the first verse in Germany though.
Although it predates the rise of the Nazis, it is still seen as a symbol of german imperialism and is strongly frowned upon.
The official german anthem nowadays is only the third verse.

That's what makes it the best verse.

Yeah, it is a good tool for trolling, but it should be used wisely.

Not sayin' it's the best, but it's a national anthem that has made the headlines today, which makes it a winner of some sort I suppose.

The song:

The verdict: In terms of World Music, this is a half-way house, a hybrid or a travesty that will not win the heart of purists. White Australian sentiments have been translated into the Eora language and sung to White Australian music. To me it sounds like a Celtic song sung in Gaelic and as such is a little disappointing as I had hoped for something more exotic. But, as with any half-way house, at least the journey has begun. In this case, the Australian sports organisations have set out on the journey to recognise Aboriginal culture.
