My dad listens to rock music, though not metal (unless you're right about him being a closet headbanger). I don't think he's even religious, and both my parents know that Iron Maiden is barely more satanic than The Beatles. But my mother is Christian, and she knows that a lot of extreme metal is Satanic, anti-Christian, gory etc., so she's not that comfortable with me listening to black/death metal. But that mostly means I have to listen to Burzum with headphones.

There was a short time in middle school where my favorite band was Limp Bizkit. Come at me.

Since I've registered here my taste in music is no where near what it used to be. My favorite band was The Icarus Line because they were balls to the wall rock & roll, break ****, do drugs, that sort of thing. I went through more than a few phases. I got started with VU & Beefheart, dipped into the really challenging stuff first. I then got really into Slint & June of 44, Gastr Del Sol and a few other post-rock math-rock type stuffs, and for some reason a lot of Pavement and Silver Jews... and then Loveless hit me, and shoegaze & dream pop become primarily what I listened to. I went back to really weird challenging industrial stuff like TG, and went through a 60's, 70's folk, garage rock phase with a psychedelic revival phase right after. I had a small doom and screamo phase thrown in there at some point too, but they were very brief. I was really into lo-fi stuff like Lau Nau, Fursaxa, Flying Saucer Attack, Jessica Bailiff, and Light until maybe a year or two ago, and then Electronic music hit me full fucking force. I think I started listening to a lot of Stereolab, then Aphex Twin and u-ziq somehow popped up into there. Right now though I'm still in my electronic phase, who knows when it will end, but I keep finding more, and more and I haven't gotten bored or found something else to grab my attention yet.

Sorry if this is so jumbled, but I've been through so many phases, and I know I'm missing a few in there, and these periods have crossed over each other and it's just hard to remember what goes where. It's almost frustrating trying to remember.

The first tune I can remember really getting passionate about was Paper Lace - The Night Chicago Died. I was in 3rd or 4th grade. After that it was Bohemian Rhapsody (5th grade), and then from there it went to Bad Co - R&R Fantasy. By the time I hit HS I was into Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and the like. Iron Maiden, and Slayer type stuff were next, and then I discovered guitar instrumentalists like Satriani, Vai, and Eric Johnson. By this time I was 19-20 or so. I delved a bit deeper into the guitar world with Segovia, Parkening, and then went to the jazz side of things with Stanley Jordan, and Frank Gambale styles. I discovered how much I really liked the blues around this same time too with John Mayall - Have You Ever Loved A Woman via Eric Clapton kicking things off in my head. That pretty much stayed with me for quite a while until bands like SOAD and Godsmack came along. Then came Buckethead. I was stuck on the Bucket for a few years, and now I'm into Derek Trucks, and rediscovering some Southern Rock, and even some Motown and Funk. Like Janz, it's constantly evolving.

So my taste in music now is very very different than it was when I was just getting into music, but to be honest in the last 5 or so years it has barely changed. I went through phases that's for sure, but now all my phases kind of combined into one. I started by liking whatever my parents listened to, then when I was like 8-12 my early developed tastes were what was popular on modern rock radio. (I liked Linkin Park a lot)

I went through a brief classic rock phase in middle school before I evolved into my tastes now. Basically now, I don't have a genre of choice, and I still have the same favorite bands I had sophomore/junior year of high school, so I guess that's my answer.

i got into Alternative at the beginning of the 90's
Mainly through bands like Nirvana, Sonic youth and Pavement

When did you discover your favourite band/artist?

Around 97 or 98 i think a friend of mine recorded the 'Death to the pixies' album for me on a tape assuring me i would luv it.
At first i didn't like the album but over time The Pixies grew on me until i somehow became a fanboy.


When did you last discover a new genre?

Not too long ago a friend of mine introduced me to Django which messed up my whole outlook on music and guitar playing, i never liked Jazz much but for some reason i luv Django's swing jazz.

Apart from Frank Black i can say Django is my biggest music influence. i wanna play like them one day

Would you consider your tastes set in stone?

Not at all, in fact lately im really into rap and hip hop music a i don't really know why but i don't fight the urge

... yeah I'll be the first one to admit there was a time where my music taste had settled.

And I have to say I am ahead of the curve because my taste was set by 12 to 14 years of age. :)

I guess most people here see themselves not having their taste in music set by age 20. I don't see myself as an average MB member, who are in turn as you pointed out "not average people. ;)" So maybe I should be clumped in with the average people (but 6 to 8 years ahead of them) or maybe be a music nerd's nerd, but like Milhouse said: "I'm not a nerd, Bart! Nerds are smart." ... hence my dilemma. I don't know where I stand. :confused: I feel like an average Joe, but I have no way of telling. :(

I see the whole thing differently. I find my taste basically remaining the same. On the other-hand I find that it's an endless process for exploring the types of music I already like. I understand music is constantly evolving, but even with that in mind the newer bands I discover take their inspiration from the same styles of music I already know about and like. So in short: I see new music as a newer interpretation of old music.

About 12 y/o, maybe younger.

I learned a little more about a few sub-genres that I over-looked but I haven't found a whole brand new and different genre I haven't heard before and liked it.

Sometimes I feel that my taste is etched in stone. There are some things I can not listen to 24/7. I'll listen to it when I am in the mood for it then be done with for a while. I don't see my taste as branching off in new directions to unrelated genres of music I haven't heard before as much as fluctuating among the things I already like. Still I have to be in the mood to listen to it.

I hold on to what I like. I might not listen to it constantly, sometimes I put it down for a while and pick it up later. But basically everything I then I like now.
